2015 NASCAR TAILSPINS

The racing was good last year better than the usual , but I don't think the eliminations made it any better.
It also wasn't the best it has ever been or even the best chase.

Phoenix was a prime example of the caution orgies fans had to endure this year. Like many of those events a race could never settle in, it was reduced to who could get the best restarts.
Among the contenders Talladega was reduced to a couple of desperados racing hard, and the rest stroking or running in the back protecting themselves against elimination.

I get no joy over emphasising the above facts because for the most part the racing as a whole was good, and this argument has gotten old.
But I am not going to fluff or promote its a lovely day in the neighborhood illusion, and the best of times Yada, Yada for the sake of the Nascar brand.

The late 80s and early 90s was definitely better than the current racing. Bias ply tires kept tire management strategies in place, and the racing more interesting. Racing thru a cycle was more common, the cars were not as aero sensitive and passing for the lead (the real kind on the track, throughout the entire green run) occurred more.

In terms of quality 1992 was much better than 2014. So the Chase version 2014 definitely absolutely was not the best it has ever been, in spite of the hype.
As an aside it was before cookie cutters like Kansas, Chicago, and Kentucky flooded the schedule.

The talking heads were a good example of what this season was all about. More yap about the slapping air punches thrown than the actual racing. More of a carnival type parade, than actual racing dramas.

Last of all I know somebody can Google up racing stats and milk the 2014 hype. The stats don't mean much and they can promote distortions or good chase 2014 propaganda , as in 25 cars or more finishing on the lead lap. The reality is that many of those would been many laps down without the wave arounds and lucky dogs.

We have the most tightly controlled spec car Nascar has ever seen. That's progress and evolution, the nature of the beast, in many respects we can't go back. The cars are safer, less of our drivers get killed. Thank God and yes the current leadership in Nascar for that.

But with those tighter controls and specs, along with tire evolution you would think that we get less debris cautions. Back in the day the cars were cruder and simpler, with a bias ply tire that was definitely more helter skelter. It amazes me to see long time fans that so willingly accept all the BS cautions we currently endure. Or fail to acknowledge that the racing isn't being compromised, simply to reset, restack the field.

Long post. In short we are not living in the worst of Nascar times, we had a great season. Just not the best ever, and the chase was not the best points battle ever, or even the best chase.

Good post Greg. One of the things I hated about this last chase is how NASCAR and its media droned on relentlessly about how awesome it was and how the racing is the best it's ever been. As you said, the racing was good, but not necessarily the best it's ever been. Many of those close finishes this year were fabricated by faux cautions that came out late in races, so just like the close championship battle itself, they were forced and did not occur naturally.

I come to a board to talk. To think. Maybe to bitch. Sometimes to prove point. There are days when I get lucky and find a post that nails it. This, Greg, does that. Perfectly said, and if I was the Ruler of the World (there would be a lot of Toyotas running around but I digress), your ass would be on my NASCAR Radio instead of the idiots they have on now. I listen and I read this board to formulate an understanding of this sport I love. Your post captured what has been NASCAR recently. Nice job. Great read. Thank you.

I watch this sport because I have a love affair with cars doing stuff that your normal street car can't do. They are loud, they are engineering marvels, the drivers are insanely talented, the crews work their asses off, the crew chiefs are smart, and the symbol that I have on the middle of my steering wheel is the same one on the grill. I don't give a **** how far from my 4 Runner a "stock car" is. What Kyle Busch drives is TRD/JGR's interpretation of what can be done in a somewhat spec way, and what I drive is Toyota's interpretation of a SUV. I connect with this, and I love it.

So blah blah blah.....my bottom line is between the yellows, etc. and within the context of this Chase, I get what I need. If people want to **** themselves good or bad about this and that, that's fine. I still get what I need.

So where do you propose satisfying that desire? F1? IRL? The local track? What do you see as your alternatives?

For me, it's been F1. It has its issues, but not like what NASCAR has done.

I think the current points system has diminished the title of champion a bit. As much as I dislike that, will I still watch? Not just yes, but hell yes, I'll be watching. The race is the thing. The races are what we watch. The races are why we became fans. It's not drivers, manufactures, or the pre or post race antics. I don't care who is lucky enough to be champion now. I do care about the races, it's still the first one to the checkers wins. So until that changes, I will watch. I saw a two car super modified race a couple of months ago. Believe it or not it was a very entertaining race. Sure I wish there would have been more cars there. But I stayed, and watched, and was rewarded because, the race is the thing!

Avg. margin of victory in '14 is .922. Since inception of electronic scoring in '93, has never been under one second. There you go. #NASCAR

@djw4210 @MattWeaverSBN @RACINGnomics @NASCAR erring on the side of safety is never awkward.

It's BS and anyone with a clue knows it. There were nine races that finished with a GWC this past season. I'd be willing to bet, if someone were to go back and do the research, that this past season had the shortest average green flag run to the finish ever.

If you go back in this forum a couple of years , you will find the word "boring" used by some to describe each and every race . I think we got what those folks wished for . Even today , there are those here who think that only the winner was actually 'trying' .
