Thought I would give some updates on this unique and scary track.Quite a few of my favorite Pure Road racers and BSB riders are in this race including Peter Hickman who's going for his third straight win. Unfortunately, TT legend John McGuinness isn't here due to injuries suffered at the NW 200 and Ian Hutchinson who was injured at the TT and won this race in 2014.

Some sick onboard footage from Peter Hickman's win last year.

Irwin Beats Master Rutter in Opening Qualifying

Having opened proceedings at the Suncity Group 64th Macau Grand Prix in blistering style with the first session, the afternoon saw the motorcycle riders light a fuse under the entire session.

Once again it was all about Michael Rutter (SMT/Bathams by MGM Macau BMW) and Glenn Irwin (TAK CHUN Racing by PBM/Penz13 Ducati), and once again that does no injustice to Peter Hickman, third fastest on the second of the two SMT/Bathams by MGM Macau BMW's or fourth-placed Conor Cummins (Padgett’s Motorcycles Honda), Martin Jessopp (Riders Motorcycles BMW) or Derek Sheils, sixth on the leaderboard, another strong ride on the Cookstown Burrows Engineering Racing Suzuki.

But the drama of this session was all about the competitive nature of the battle between the old and the new. Eight times a winner and a veteran of 23 years standing around the Guia Circuit, Rutter rode his usual flawless smooth style and, when he went purple in the middle sector and top of the leaderboard halfway through the session, it seemed that circuit knowledge and experience had won the day.

However, Irwin bested him by being faster in the two short sectors at the start and finish of the lap, leaving Rutter to lower the bar in the middle yet again to get back on top of the times.

Irwin's final bid looked a lot less than smooth or flowing but somehow none of the little moments between the Armco and the walls seemed to cost him on the stopwatch, and a scorching 1m31.531 on the charge from San Francisco to Melco Hairpin was matched by purple in sector one and sector three - a flawless set of numbers that gave Irwin the overnight pole by a huge margin of 1.4 seconds over Rutter - huge by the standards of the Guia Circuit.

This time a year ago Rutter went to bed with just 0.9 seconds' advantage over second-placed Jessop. This time he may well be awake wondering what he can do to stop the precocious talent of the 27-year-old from Carrickfergus on only his second visit to Macao.

One thing is certain: expect fireworks at dawn, and then stand by for something truly exception in the race on Saturday.

Looks like the Irwin and Hickman show followed by Rutter. Nice run coming from the back by Southern 100 winner and one of the best pure road racers on the planet Dean Harrison. Dean now up to p7.

Nasty crash and red flagged. Not going to be a good ending.I'm not positive who the rider is but positive vibes to family and friends.:(
