2019 Charlotte – Bank Of America Roval 400 -- Pre-Race Thread

IF Jimmie is in the same position this year as last -- I think he's gonna boot MTJ (or anybody else) instead of gooning up entry into the final turns -- as he turns to the dark side to revive his career.

See the last paragraph of post #16 above.
well the good news with that is that we have been told numerous times over the past year from the powers that be in NASCAR to expect a schedule shake up in 2021. Unless they've been....gasp.... lying to us!

Didn't know where to put this:

I apologize in advance, I did not want all of the sponsorship news to flood the pre-race thread.

David Smith's compilation of Central Speed Ranking at the two prior 2019 roadracing circuits, Sonoma and Watkins Glen, is below. The rankings are based on green flag lap times adjusted to exclude crash damage, pit stops, and other anomalies.

Two races isn't much for drawing conclusions, but the data implies Matt DiBenedetto is a legit roadracing ace. The Leavine Family #95 ranks 6th fastest on road circuits versus 23rd in speed across all 28 races this year. That's a big gain on the road circuits... impressive. Martin Truex and Chase Elliott also showed their chops, IMO.

On the other hand, the best blue oval cars seem quicker on the ovals than on roadracing tracks. Harvick is 2nd fastest for the year, but only 9th quick at Sonoma and Watkins Glen. Brad K's ranking fell from 3rd to 10th, and Logano from 5th to 12th. All three drivers are pretty good roadracers, so maybe the cars have lagged behind??

[The data below is just for the two road races. Truex in the 19 was fastest at Sonoma and second quick at the Glen, so his average was 1.50. Chase Elliott in the 9 was fastest at the Glen and third quick at Sonoma, so that's 2.00 average.]

1. Joe Gibbs/19 Avg Rank = 1.50
2. Hendrick/9 Avg Rank = 2.00
3. Joe Gibbs/18 ... Avg Rank = 3.50
4. Joe Gibbs/11 ... Avg Rank = 4.00
5. Chip Ganassi/42 ... Avg Rank = 7.50
6. Leavine Family/95 ... Avg Rank = 8.00
7-t. Penske/12 ... Avg Rank = 8.50
7-t. Joe Gibbs/20 ... Avg Rank = 8.50
9. Stewart-Haas/4 ... Avg Rank = 9.00
10. Penske/2 ... Avg Rank = 12.00
11. Chip Ganassi/1 ... Avg Rank = 12.50
12. Penske/22 ... Avg Rank = 14.00
13-t. Stewart-Haas/14 ... Avg Rank = 15.00
13-t. Hendrick/24 ... Avg Rank = 15.00
13-t. Stewart-Haas/41 ... Avg Rank = 15.00
16. Roush Fenway/17 ... Avg Rank = 15.50
17. Hendrick/88 ... Avg Rank = 16.50
18-t. Hendrick/48 ... Avg Rank = 17.50
18-t. JTG Daugherty/37 ... Avg Rank = 17.50
20. Stewart-Haas/10 ... Avg Rank = 18.00
21. Roush Fenway/6 ... Avg Rank = 18.50

Tell ya what. Truex won the last two Sonoma races, had two seconds the last two Watkins Glenn's Had the Roval won before the last corner and he has won the last two races. Does anybody think the 9 car has a 2.00 ranking about all that? No mud on Elliott, just pointing out how weak this particular rating is.

So much misinformation about the ROVAL last year.

Truex was not about to win it -- he was a sitting duck, but Jimmie lost his nerve and instead of grabbing that race by the balls and moving MTJ, he gooned up which put him back-asswords and into Truex.

Poor Jimmie...

Go Blaney!

That sounds more like interpretation than information.

NASCAR has a tradition of "moving" an opponent, attempting to get the Win

Supporting documentation, please, or it's your interpretation.

Had Truex lined up in his sights and didn't take the shot and go for the Win -- Jimmie lost his nerve...

I hope Jimmie is wiser -- especially after the Truex cheap shot.

I'm excited about the new back stretch chicane. I hope they have plenty of cameras around that area. :p
It may also help sell the seats at that end of the track. It may give the folks there some different action than what the chicane offered last year.

Klingerman misjudged turn 1 badly.

Unlike him to make mistakes in road courses like that.

Kyle Busch had a moment as well.

Nemechek jumps over the moon in the chicane and Bubba goes for a spin in the same area as Hamlin. Bubba luckily gets away with a light tap.

Hamlin to Backup Car in Practice
Denny Hamlin will go to a backup car after an accident in Friday’s opening practice session for the Bank of America ROVAL 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Hamlin backed into the tire barrier coming out of Turn 5. He was 15th fastest at the time of the incident.

Last year, Hamlin also went to a backup car for this race after hitting the wall coming out of Turn 12 in qualifying.

Parker Kligerman will also go to a backup after hitting the wall in Turn 1.

Chase Elliott has a fast ass car if he can keep it under him.
