2020 Pocono Doubleheader Pre Race Thread

First time since 1987 that I won't see a NASCAR race at Pocono. This weekend is going to be so weird....

Based on what the track president said on the news I think they'll be a formal announcement coming shortly regarding a redo and even a possible double-header contract for a few years. I also get the feeling IndyCar will be back by 2022 at the latest.

I live in western Connecticut two hours from Pocono. It hasn't rained at all in roughly 2 weeks- extremely unusual for this region.

So it's a good thing NASCAR is coming to town, 80% chance of rain Saturday.

Dry month in Oklahoma also. Maybe Nascar can threaten to hold a race here

If this were a "normal" year, I think the teams would probably bring up to 4 cars, two for the oval and two for the road course. It would be very interesting to see what a schedule of events would look like to run the two different tracks the same weekend.
I don't know if some off the smaller teams have enough haulers and drivers to do bring four cars. In retrospect, that may be why NASCAR isn't using the R/C for one of the races.

Bringing two cars should work in almost every case. They do something similar during the west coast swing. As usual the smaller teams would suffer if anybody does. The larger teams could re-badge one of their other teams backup car if they need too. If this was a double Talladega weekend, all bets are off

Maybe this will be the year we get rain tires in cup at The Glen?
Maybe.

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut no longer permit travel from N. Carolina and several other states without an immediate 14 day quarantine. Hopefully the deaths from flu and car crashes will have abated before the August WG date.

I seem to remember in-car shot some time back and they weren't shifting there. I didn't realize they went back to shifting.

Stuff makes me so mad. Tons of people coming from other states to visit and then we get blamed for rising cases.

I notice the first stages for this weekend's races are noticeably shorter than the second stages (25 or 30 lap first stages vs. 55 lap seconds). Anyone know what's up with that?

Common sense would be that the cars not having practice or qualifying, coming into the pits earlier would help in making adjustments

Well, my first thought was that the shortened first stage would replace the scheduled competition caution. Then I did the math, and Saturday's first stage is 62.5 miles, almost a full fuel run and significantly longer than any comp caution run has been so far.

But the real kicker is, according to the original pre-Corona schedule on Jayski, the stages were always planned at these lengths even back when P & Q were going to occur.

So tossing aside the 'common sense' snark, does anyone have any solid information why there's so much difference in the stage lengths for these two races? Did Jayski maybe just mistype them?

Wasn't any snark. The same thing would apply also. They never make the first stage longer.

This is with the 550hp package right? Asking so I don't get my hopes up for a good race.
Like that will make any difference..Typical Pocono is a single file affair and I will be surprised if it is different. Maybe splitting it into two shorter races will help it and keep viewers watching

Yeah I would've loved to have seen the short track package just for fun. Give these guys some extra power for drive off. Gonna be a strategy fest for sure.

I would have loved to see even a simple chicane on one of the straights to add some excitement and shifting at least. Sorry but I think long straights with high speed corners at the ends of them doesn't make for much but single file racing. Hardly anybody is crazy enough to try to pass in a corner as narrow as they are. It's mostly pit stop wars. Who has the best pit stop teams..Joe Gibbs, who has won the last 5 races? Joe Gibbs.

The first two stages are usually the same length, and they are for every other race on the schedule.
not necessarily
before Covid
After covid. And who cares anyway.

Victory Junction this weekend.

Please go sit down somewhere.
Might sit in front of the TV this weekend with your permission.
Isn't Victory Junction a Petty Charity? Can't be paying much as a sponsor.

Anyone watching the ARCA race? Been pretty good imo.

These late start times are definitely interesting for a few reasons. These guys are battling a brutal setting sun right now...

yeah there is a thread in Other Racing/Arca/ARCA at Pocono.

I'm afraid the weather has really handicapped nascar's opportunity to capitalize right now. How many people who aren't already emotionally invested in the sport are going to keep coming back to watch rain delays? There's nothing you can do to control the weather but dang, the pernicious effects of this weather have to be causing nascar's head brass to beat there heads against the wall.
