2026 Daytona 500 Countdown

Kelly Petillo's win in the 1935 Indy 500 was the 1st time an Offenhauser engine captured the 500. There would be many more...

Rodger Ward won the Indy 500 in 1959 and 1962 driving for Bob Wilke's Leader Card team, sort of like the Team Penske of that era. Chassis by the legendary A.J. Watson, who also was Ward's chief mechanic (crew chief). Offenhauser engine. Ward's 1959 car was entered as number 5...

On my short list of motor racing GOAT's. And a Hollywood casting department could not possibly come up with a better look for a GOAT.

Dick Mann was a flat tracker at heart, but also highly capable as a road racer. He won the Daytona 200 back-to-back in 1970 and 1971, both years on bikes that were not supposed to have a prayer of a chance in that grueling race. His 1970 mount, a Honda CB750 four cylinder, carried number 2 so it's for another day. His 1971 steed, a BSA 750 Rocket 3, carried number 4...

A photo that summarizes the career of Kevin Harvick with Rodney Childers at SHR... freaky fast and cheated up. Notice how the roof and rear windshield have deflected due to the aerodynamic load at high speed, thus reducing greenhouse drag and increasing rear downforce. NASCAR inspectors never found out about this until various internet sleuths posted photos such as this...

Giacomo Agostini won 15 FIM grand prix championships, including 8 in the premier class (500 cc) plus 7 in the 350 cc class. Most of those were won while riding for the dominant MV Agusta team, but late in his career, Ago shocked the racing world by signing with Yamaha...

Chase Sexton has number 4 now. Very fast. Too many mistakes.

Darlington, back in the day when they had enough sense to have covered bleachers at tracks.

They had covered seating but it was noisy!! Those ribbed metal roofs bounced the noise back twice as loud. Imagine sitting on a porch with a tin roof in a rain storm than add exhaust sounds reverberating from the roof.

I wouldn't have a problem with it on a 100 degree day.

Gaston Chevrolet won the 1920 Indy 500 in a Frontenac. Gaston died in November 1920 in a racing accident at the Beverly Hills (CA) Speedway board track.

Billy Arnold won the 1930 Indy 500 with front wheel drive Miller power. Miller dominated Indy in the 1920's and early 1930's, but went bankrupt in 1933. Fred Offenhauser, Miller's longstanding shop foreman, purchased Miller's assets... and the Offenhauser motor was born. It was strictly a continuation and later an evolution of what Harry Miller had been building. Miller engines won 12 Indy 500's in the 1920's to mid-'30's. Offenhauser motors won an incredible 27 Indy 500's from the mid-30's to the mid-70's.

Jim Rathman was a three-time runner up in the Indy 500 when he finally captured a win in 1960. Smokey Yunick prepared the car, a Watson roadster with Offy power.

Rathman dueled for over 100 laps with Rodger Ward (the 1959 and '62 winner) but Ward slowed dramatically on lap 197 when he corded his right front Firestone. Ward was a Firestone test driver. I suppose he knew better than anyone if he could get three fast laps out of that tire!

"Lone Star JR" won three Indy 500's. His third Borg-Warner was from 1980, driving a Chaparral 2K owned by legendary racing innovator Jim Hall. The Chaparral 2K was a ground breaking design featuring high downforce from ground effect tunnels. Cosworth power.

Emerson Fittipaldi won the Indy 500 in 1989 and 1993, after capturing two F1 championships driving for Lotus (1972) and McLaren (1974). Both Indy wins were in Penske chassis and running Chevrolet engines. The 1993 winner carried number 4...

WTF, Emo?
4 1993 Emo did what.jpeg

After his 1993 Indy 500 victory, Fittipaldi refused the traditional chug of milk in favor of orange juice, a tone deaf move that earned him lasting scorn from many racing fans. It remains unknown whether karma for this bonehead stunt led directly to the collapse of Fittipaldi's business empire in Brazil (including citrus groves).
