2026 Nascar Daytona 500

I appreciate Nascars efforts to level the playing field or provide some consistency for the non charted teams to race their way into the 500.

But it is virtually impossible to eliminate the potential for any shenanigans. For example in Duel #1 Corey Lajoie will probably be getting a lot of drafting help from his teammates, Keselowski and Buescher.

Qualifying is mostly worthless, so now all bets are off except for two cars. I enjoyed watching it but? Hey lets line them up for 2 races today. What happens if cars who qualified well wreck out? I mean what in the heck are they doing lol.

Before it gets here. Some were saying the Fords were only running 90% because the TV showed that they were. Explanation below.

I don't know who gave Nascar the idea that if they make everything complicated, fans will be impressed?

Eh, this format is used for only one race, and it's one where starting position matters the least. Pit stall selection matters more here than where a driver starts.

Trying to explain qualifying for the 500 to a newbie reminds me of trying to explain how the season champion is determined ever since Kenseth won it in 2003.

The response I usually get is "Never mind, it's not that important."

My problem is I couldn't explain it to start with.

Daytona 500 qualifying isn't that complicated though. Hell, it was more complicated back when they provisionals and had 50+ cars showing up.

They take the fastest two open cars in qualifying and then take the best finishing open car from each race.

What part of this is difficult?

Not according to Pockrass as quoted in post #88. The two fastest open cars in qualifying are no longer locked in. It's now the best two opens in each Duel that get in.

If I'm NASCAR, I'm starting this race at 12pm, 1pm at the latest.
Maybe Fox will agree to push the start up into the pre-race broadcast window, but I'm not optimistic about their cooperation. When all their promotion says 2:30, I suspect they'll stick with it. I think the best we can hope for is to move pre-race ceremonies up so the green drops at 2:32 or so..

Last year's race was pushed up to 1:30pm due to weather.

Grown ass race fans, everybody who is here and nobody can agree about how all this works. It's far from simple. People who just watch the Daytona first races of the season can't have any idea.

The four open cars that meet the qualification requirements will start the 500.
