I know a lot of people aren’t going to be thrilled with a PPM three-peat, but that was a damn impressive victory. They unloaded the quickest at the Roar and kept their pace throughout the whole week. The Acura drivers insisted despite inheriting the pole that the Porsches were the ones to beat, and they didn’t lie. Aitken’s charge at the end was immensely impressive, and I have to wonder what could’ve been if the 31 were ever able to retain track position. It seemed there was always some snafu they were fighting back from. Likewise a very impressive podium by the 25 BMW in WRT’s first IMSA GTP outing, who seemed to come alive in the daytime hours and passed the 6 Porsche on track in the final stint.
A very strategic victory in GTD Pro by the PMR crew, who went all out on their penultimate stint in order to short pit and try to hold off the 75 Express crew while saving fuel and holding onto older tires to the checkered - their final stop was 13 seconds shorter than the AMGs and they ultimately won by 2.2 seconds. A much cleaner race from PMR than the shenanigans that took place last year. Unfortunately a lot of poor luck befell the Corvette gang again. Missed opportunities with the pace they had all weekend.
Winward remain the standard bearers in GTD. Opinions vary heavily on whether the race craft from Phillip Ellis towards the end was dirty or not. Given the stakes and how Thiim had raced others earlier, it seemed to be hard but fair. Would’ve been a hell of a story if Magnus had managed to pull it off, but 2nd is a great result for the little team that could. It’s becoming increasingly likely that Max Verstappen will end up contesting the Nürburgring 24 with Winward in May, which would be a hell of a story if it pans out.
Freak luck with the fog and how much racing it sucked away, but the finish made up for it and the some. Damn good event, although I do start to wonder about at what point they start to limit some of the access as far as the grid walk, paddock, etc. are concerned.
