McMurray the first? When #1-Jamie McMurray won the pole for the Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway, from looking back thru some record book, it looks like no driver has won the Daytona 500 and then sat on the pole in the next race, so McMurray may be the first. In 1981 Bobby Allison won the first race of the year at Riverside and the following week he won the the pole for the Daytona 500. Geoff Bodine won the 1986 Daytona 500 and started on the pole at Richmond the following race BIU qualifying was rained out and Bodine was awarded the first starting spot.(2-20-2010)
