Personally, I think Junior's pivotal season was 2001. He had every reason to just ride, or even quit. But he struggled along and managed a top ten in points. The boy has some steel in him.
Had not the California wreck happened, he would have contended this year. I don't consider 2002 a disappointment at all. He certainly came back to win again. He definitely improved his short track performance.
2003 will be a learning season --- new body, new rules, and a lot of new pit crew members. 2004 will tell the tale.
Does he have what it takes to win a WC --- yes. Maybe not multiples, but at least 1 or 2.
Will he replace Big D --- no, no one will. The mold was broken when Big D was made.
Do I expect him to be a "greatest driver" --- no.
Do I expect him to drive until he's 50 -- no.
