A pivotal season awaits Junior...

But to get back to the "pivotal season" article.

Personally, I think Junior's pivotal season was 2001. He had every reason to just ride, or even quit. But he struggled along and managed a top ten in points. The boy has some steel in him.

Had not the California wreck happened, he would have contended this year. I don't consider 2002 a disappointment at all. He certainly came back to win again. He definitely improved his short track performance.

2003 will be a learning season --- new body, new rules, and a lot of new pit crew members. 2004 will tell the tale.

Does he have what it takes to win a WC --- yes. Maybe not multiples, but at least 1 or 2.

Will he replace Big D --- no, no one will. The mold was broken when Big D was made.

Do I expect him to be a "greatest driver" --- no.

Do I expect him to drive until he's 50 -- no.

Bud, you fighting a losing battle. All Jr and Sr fans are nothing but a bunch of cuckoo bandwagon-jumpers who think thier favorite driver is always picked on. You need to be a Stewy fan...he is such a breath of fresh air for NASCAR. The damn media ALWAYS blows it out of proportion when dealing with him. Sure, he has bad-mouthed fans, started fights in the pits, spun people out on pit road, but dammit, he's exactly what NASCAR needs.

It is well documented that Jr is a beer swilling, gang-banging, media hound, who I heard is thinking about buying his own cable company so he can be on TV even more!! He's not even going to race anymore, he's gonna just sit at the Bud trailor at the track and sign autographs.

Bud Stud, I hope you can see the light one day.......

:D

You guys are pretty funny! I do agree that Jr. is a ham, he loves being in front of the camera and loves the social life. Like i said earlier in this thread he needs to focus! He has already proven he is a good driver, now all he has to do is prove he can win a championship. If he can put that energy he uses off the track into his racing career....watch out!

You'd be well advised to. Fergy brings everything back to Stewart. Careful or he'll start in on Waltrip too!

The more truth to the statements is directly relative to the strength with which he lashes out. Where I come from that's called...aw hell...I'm sure it's painfully obvious anyway.

:D

hehe. I know what you are saying, Paul.

I have mixed feelings on Jr., so I could go either way about him. I tend to stay out of arguements about him, though.

I have mixed feelings about Stewart too. I used to be a fan of his but then he started acting like a d-head. Now he's acting a little more mature and is funny too, so I am thinking about liking him again.

Does Fergy only rip Stewart? I'm noticing a pattern here.....

Kinda like you and a couple of other posters throw everything back to Jr and Sr? ;)

If defending my driver is going to get me called cuckoo and the comment being made that I think I'm being picked on, I'm done with this board. That's the second time you've done that and I am getting tired of it.

You can't expect to say that Earnhardt and/or Jr has or had no desire to win a race and not have anything said back to you. You obviously don't know anything about about the early years of Dale, Sr nor the early years of Jr for that matter. Seems like they have been racing for their entire lives. Way before the times of diecast cars and coffee mugs with a driver's picture on them. True, Earnhardt set the precedent of driver souvenirs. But I haven't heard any other driver saying for Action or Chase not to put their image on a diecast car or jacket. And is it Earnhardt's fault that he was the most popular driver or that he has the most fans? No, I don't think so. It just sucks for the rest of the drivers.

Another point I'm trying to make is, why is it when someone post something about Jr, something negetive is said. Then when someone defends it, the poster gets chastised? Is that the way this place is getting? When Tony does something stupid, fighting in the pits, spinning someone out on pit road, its the greatest thing. When Harvick and Biffle got into it, people started screaming that it was scripted and it looked like the WWF. When Stewart and Robby Gordon got into it, no one said anything like that. When I posted the picture of Stewart running to the reporter at Homestead, I couldn't believe how many people said the photo was fake! It was hilarious!! That photo was taken by a photographer for the Orlando Sentinal. It wasn't made by someone's scanner. True, the whole thing was B.S. but the way people reacted on here was comical.

I have honestly tried to like Stewart. I have always liked Bobby Labonte and Joe Gibbs. But I get tired of hearing Stewart's constant whining about the fans and everything else. Yeah, some of the problems he had in the pits with the reporters was B.S. but some other things he has done, he brought them on himself. But Heaven forbid you talk about them here.

Bla bla bla same old crap different pile.

This thread was about Jr, no one turned it into a Jr thread.

Do what you wish, you may get tired of Stewart's whining but it's clearly obvious some people are growing tired of your whining.

Oh, and news flash...drivers have been fighting in the pits for YEARS.

Welcome to the sport, I hope you enjoy it.

All drivers whine to a certain extent -- that's the truth.

All drivers love to have their face on camera -- it's publicity that pays the bills.

All drivers love to have their face/name on souvenirs --- it puts money in their pockets.

I don't give a rat's ass about all of the above. I just tune out their whining. I pay no attentions to the high-jinks(on or off the track). I don't spend lots of money on souvenirs.

The endless arguing about why a driver races, money involved, whining, or why someone thinks a driver is the greatest is getting old. It doesn't matter.

The only thing that matters is that 43 drivers get out on the track on Sunday, risking life and limb for our entertainment.

Period.

What we've all got to remember is opinions are like a$$holes, we all have one.

I don't care if a female fan likes a driver just because he's got a cute butt. So what?

Guys, it's perfectly acceptable to me if you like the female drivers because they have "it". It's also perfectly acceptable to me if you view female fans as nuts because they like a driver's long legs.

I guess what I trying to get at, is that it doesn't matter why we watch. We are race fans. We're a captive audience -- subject to the whims of NASCAR. We pay our money to watch something we love. We may not like the way the sport is run, but to some, it's the only game in town. We may not like the road the sport is traveling, but our only option is to get off the bus --- and that, I can't do.

Fighting among ourselves over trivial things is not the answer for what plagues our sport. I wish I had the answer.

*getting off soapbox*

Maybe we can all pitch in and help Paul and Julie move to their new digs?

What is up with this? I'm not a bang-wagon jumper to anything.. I've liked Jr more than Sr.. ever since his Busch days. Do I like Tony Stewart? Yes.. I am a fan! Ever since his IRL days... and I'm not bang-wagon jumper...
I'm not a Stewart fan because he won the Championship... I've always liked Stewart, because he's a real race car driver..

What is up with you guys? I post something about Jr, maybe post a few times about it... and you all throw it right back in my face.

It's nothing against you at all.

We fight like this all the time, you should be used to it by now. :D:D

haha.. I'm getting use to it... Hell man, its offseason..
what else is there to do?

Every season is a pivotal season for every driver. Hot one year, not the next, gone after that.

ain't it the truth!

jeff organ is living proof of this fact as he sat 4th chair at the awards ceremonies this year. dale sr had up and down seasons and who knows if we will ever see dj or bobby labonte at the head table again? dale jr. has a better chance of getting a championship than 75% of the current field; how is this season so pivotal?:(

Well said mulu..............and welcome to the boards!! Haven't seen your posts before!!:beerchug:

thanks. i lurk more than post but have a few. i think the posting will be more common when the season picks up again since there is really nothing to comment on except:

i watched the 1984 talledega 500 on speed today and de was the first back to back winner in cars that used OEM windshields, realistic sheetmetal, bias ply tires and no plates. the speed channel kicks and i miss de.:waa:

I love watching all those old races on Speed , they kick butt. Wish we could go back to those days without the plates, but don't want to open up that hashed over can of worms again. Anyway good points in this thread, interesting stuff.

It was a surprise for me to see that Jr. didn't finish in the top ten this year. Sure hope he can pick up the pace.

In the latest Winston Cup Illustrated magazine, Junior was asked this question

In 2002 you suffered a concussion.  How did that affect your ability to race?

It's hard to explain.  I could go out there and drive ust as fast and not feel anything different and be fine.  But when the car didn't work just right and I needed a tenth (of a second) to be where the fast guys are, I would like, "Hey, I need a tenth but I don't know where I need it at what part of the race track."
I couldn't tell why we were not running with the leaders.  The car might be tight and I couldn't say "I need a track bar lowered on the right side or the left front spring needs to be softer."  I would just say, "It's tight. That's all I can tell you."
When you drive three years straight and you drive race after race after race and you make 50 changes on that car each weekend, that amounts to 2,500 changes a year, roughly.
You know (laughing) waht that right rear sway bar change feels like and when you go out next week or two months later and you know what you want to change and what you feel, that's what I do now.
