or a bad case of red a$$ as Bow would say....

Okay I need to vent and I am asking for opinions to see if I am out of line here...
A little background my daughter is a freshman, she has been in competition cheer since she was like 4. Since 3rd grade she has cheered for her school and on the school competition squad. She busts her butt practicing and cheering.
Okay here is what happened...
Last Thursday was a mandatory meeting for all winter student athletes and at least 1 parent. Because I could not attend Taylor was not aloud to participate in cheerleading practice this week. I of course went tonight to the make up meeting. Because it is a make up meeting I am the only Cheer parent attending. The athletic director was going over the rules and regulations for all student athletes, one of the rules is that a student athlete can only participate in one sport at a time. One of the dads asked why there is a cheerleader that cheers for football and also plays volleyball. The athletic director's response was that cheerleading is not a sport it is a club. Tay's face... OMG she was ticked... I then ask why I have to attend this meeting? I am told because it does fall under athletics, but it's not a sport. I let it drop... He continues on and starts talking about how the school provides all athletes with their uniforms but realizes that shoes are expensive and that is why the athletic boosters provide $25 toward each high school student athletes shoes. This point I am ticked. The school has NEVER paid anything toward cheerleading uniforms or shoes. For everything Tay had to get for cheerleading this year it was $660. I asked why the athletic boosters don't provide anything toward cheerleading shoes, again I am told it's not a sport. But yet I am required to attend this meeting for her to participate in cheerleading.... the point of physicals was brought up and I quote "anyone participating in a SPORT is required to have a physical prior to the beginning of that SPORT" Well Tay had her required physical....
I am just ticked, they can have cheerleading fall under athletics and require all the same things they do for all other sports; grades, mandatory meetings, physicals, as a sports parent I am required to work at least 4 hours at the concession stand... But when it comes to putting any money toward their uniforms or even shoes it's not a sport.... And Tay is so mad, she is like I practice just as hard as anyone that participates in any other sport...

How can they have it both ways? These girls work so hard, how is this not a sport????

you're not out of line, but I'm not surprised...my cousin was a cheerleader and is now a cheerleader coach for the public school system and it's similar here.

I never heard of mandatory meetings for parents. Here some kids would never get to play if they waited on their parents to go to meetings. SAD BUT TRUE!!!!

I didn't have to attend any meetings when they played Volleyball.
Parents here had to pay everything for the cheerleaders too.

my niece also was a cheerleader from grade school through high school. you are right to feel the way u do.however my niece was injured during a football game and broke her arm in several places.b/c she was tiny they couldn't put pins in her are they used a special glue.long story short, her didn't heal right and she was kicked off the team!so u just go ahead and give em hell!you are not out of line at all.good luck.

I should probably stay out of this but y'all know me...
Does the Athletic Dept use the Cheerleader participation numbers for Title IX purposes? If they do then it they are treating it as a sport. If they don't then they don't see it as a sport. That opens up a different can of worms but at least it may put you on a legal footing.

I don't know the answer to that question, guess I need to find out. I just don't understand how they can have it both ways. Make these girls and parents meet all sports requirements yet not classify it as a sport....

DeeDee, I don't think you are out of line, and remember that some don't consider NASCAR to be a sport. IMO, the school is nothing but hypocritical.

I was a cheerleader

In high school in 1956.. All the school gave us was a letter With a horn on it, after the seasons were over..
Betsy;)

If you have a pic of you in your cheerleader outfit I'd love to see it...
But, then some might get a woody...reference to another thread...

BP

One could prolly heat a house for a full winter with the wood you make just walking past a chicken coop..
Betsy:rolleyes:

Nah I'm too old. You wouldn't get much more than a little kindling...
