The worst driver of the decade thread made me decide to share my crash stats project, which I plan on turning into a book at some point. As some may have seen in my posts about it before I have tracked the number of crashes by Cup drivers by digging through all 2000+ Cup series races on racing reference. I started this 2 years ago. The totals for drivers include all races including the Duels, Clash, All Star race, and back in the day there were other qualifying races and consolation races. The only limit is on available results. For example its not until the 90s that you have caution flag reasons listed for all races. In those cases I can only go by if it lists the dnf as crashed. Because of this the top of the list heavily favors modern drivers because for example the 1949 season only had data that totaled 11 crashes. I'm working on getting percentages based off starts but that is a slow math process as this list includes 1168 drivers. The key to having a lot seems to be either not that great with an inexplicably long career such as #1 driver Michael Waltrip. A driver like Richard Petty has it based off of longevity. Interestingly depending on how his 2020 season goes Kurt Busch could overtake Michael Waltrip.

Wow, good job, that's amazing
Thanks, its been a long project I'm debating what to do next currently leaning towards Xfinity, nothing should be the level of Cup though either because fewer races or lack of records.

Chuck Meekins ... 3 wrecks.

Also 3 lead lap finishes during his 24 race, 5 year career as a professional racecar driver. Statistical throwaway?

Dale Earnhardt and Bill Elliott have impressively low numbers. Kevin Harvick's number is impressive too.

It's also a pretty good way to compare eras. Crashes seem to be more common nowadays than they did 20 years ago. Of course, there's a lot less respect on track in today's NASCAR, and a handful of drivers with a "win no matter what" mentality even if it means wrecking others, and then there's the manufactured drama - debris cautions, stage races, cautions flying for anything and everything late in a race which sets up more chaos, etc.

Sr actually didn't crash out of a race from like 87 to 94 which is crazy since when you think of Dale it's the I just wa ted to rattle his cage. Bill Elliott had 1 season with more then 5 crashes and that was 6.

In still doing career percentages like I said but I'm pretty sure I will find someone who wrecked twice in 1 career race.

I’m sure you will. I picked that guy off your list randomly. In his era, he could (and did) finish 4th several laps down to record a top five.

Obviously, he wasn’t as bad as Ricardo Stenhouse.

And people had the nerve to say Trevor Bayne was the worst driver of the decade. Look at all those with more wrecks than him.

Very interesting. David Pearson and Bobby Allison's rate of wins versus crashes is very impressive imo.

I wonder how badly Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip skewed their ratios by racing much longer than they should have.

I know it is a Cup thread but the amount of crashes that Stephen Wallace had in the Grand National series is still very disturbing.

I had to get psychological counseling after watching it all. I even studied Old Testament laws and considered getting into politics simply to reinstitute Stoning for the worst offenses, and Wallace was the first offender I had in mind.

You would think crashes had to increase as a result of the double file restarts.

Another interesting stat would be some sort of ratio of starts vs crashes

Starts vs crashes is something I'm working on, it's just counting what I counted as starts and 1,168 math problems.

There are a lot of factors, that being one. Late race cautions. More and more slower cars, and more hacks out there. Lapped cars no longer racing with respect and taking leaders out. A LOT more aggression because of things like the playoffs and "win and you're in." A lot more drivers who are more aggressive (Kyle, Kurt, Kez, Logano, Harvick, Larson).

A bunch of today's drivers learned to race by watching Days of Thunder, playing videogames, and being told to Raise Hell and Praise Dale. A bunch of them believe that you do whatever it takes to win, even if it means deliberately crashing your opponents.

The one thing that will bring some of these stats down in the future is how slow these cars are now, thus easier to drive, which means fewer wrecks caused by ill-handling cars.

We have seen a dip since 2016 in totals, 2005 if I recall without pulling it up had the most. I'LL post season totals and drivers who lead each season tomorrow when I'm on my conputer.

Is 2016 when NASCAR instituted the 5-minute repair clock? Sending questionable cars to the garage instead of letting them restart may be one reason for that dip.

Are these numbers if crashes or number of times someone crashed out? Some guys would spin a wrecked race car 2 or 3 times

By chance, I came upon a familiar name.

When do you plan to alphabetize the list (by number of crashes)? :D

I wonder if Dad Rusty got psychological help. Dad Rusty who was footing the bill for young Stephen's wreckathon and ironically was announcing many of Steven's (that was what Rusty called him thru clenched teeth) stupidity while watching the $$ signs fly out the window was on the one hand pitiful, but I also couldn't quit laughing. Glad it didn't last long Wallace was painful to watch.

Considering Elliott's and Sr's lack of wreck numbers, they were also racing more short tracks back in the day that should have more wrecks than the newer track schedules.

What would improve this list would be to divide total wrecks of each driver by career total # of races to get a better idea of how often they wrecked. Wrecks per race if you will. Streme, for example, would jump far up the list.
