He sniffs out all kinda stuff. Unfortunately, we are renting right now, so I don't have a fenced yard. Bassets are wonderful dogs, but nobody ever accused them of being smart. At all. I mean even a little bit smart. So I have to keep him penned for his own good. He, like all bassets, get on a scent and look up 3 hours later and go "Where am I?" They can't figure out to follow the same scent back home. Where we live is very rural, lots of mountains, streams, etc. I'd never find him. So he has to stay put for now. He has alerted us so far to numerous coyotes, several wolves, countless deer, at least one black bear, and God knows what else in the yard. The wolves scared me the most. Luckily, they moved on after a prompt from my .12 gauge.
