Are Indy fans more mature than NASCAR fans?

I know i am a little late posting this but I noticed something after watching the NASCAR all star race and then the Indy 500.

At the NASCAR All Star race, nearly every driver got booed to some extent.

At the Indy 500 I didn't hear a single boo as drivers were introduced, they were all cheered...all of them.

What does this say about NASCAR fans? (I am one btw)

There's really only one person open wheel fans in America doesn't like and she's infesting NASCAR now.

The vast majority of the people at the indy 500 don't even follow the series other then the 500. I boo drivers I don't like at IRL races anytime I go, especially Will Power.

IRL just doesn't have the same large following that Nascar does. If they did there would be drivers getting booed just the same.

I hear Dario get booed the most before last year just because people were sick of him winning championships.

Well I'm certainly not very mature...and I like em both...so I guess that doesn't help.

(so why did I post this?...probably because I'm immature)

I noticed, the first year at Baltimore, a lot of people (casual fans) started out cheering for Danica and, by the time the race started on Sunday, most of the fans there were cheering for Simona, Marco and Will Power. Like I said, there's only one person IndyCar fans don't like - and it's because she was a diva in a fan friendly sport.

Just cause they save their excessive drinking till later in the day at Indy.

Drivers aren't booed in other series? This probably doesn't make me look mature, but I boo drivers when I go to races if I'm unhappy with them at the moment. I booed Kyle at the most recent Cup race in Texas because I was unhappy with him winning the NW race.

There are two things that I don't do. I don't boo other fans drivers, and I don't boo other drivers fans just because they don't like a driver that I like, at the track or on a forum. But, that doesn't mean that I think there is anything wrong with it, unless they start letting it make them mad to the point that they would want to go out and fight someone. I don't think I get as emotionally involved with drivers and teams as a lot of fans do. I don't put all my eggs in one basket, I usually root for anywhere from 3 to 5 teams in a race, and if one of them wins then that's cool, but if they don't, then there still will be another race the next weekend. But, I love it when there is controversy over different drivers and teams, infact that is one of the attractions that has kept me here for so long. If someone doesn't have thick skin or takes things to personally on a forum, then they probably are not going to last very long.

I'm not a fan of booing drivers. In 20 years of going to races I have only boo one driver.

The driver introductions at Indy are more of a traditional Kentucky Derby-type thing while NASCAR sets up the driver introductions at the All-Star like a professional wrestling intro. I think in that scenario, NASCAR wants people to boo the drivers they don't like.

There are plenty of drivers that Indy fans hate. You should of seen my text messages today when Bourdais wrecked half the field at Detroit today. :D

Not booing Marco is enough evidence of stupidity :), a crowd that doesn't deserve the consumed oxygen.

Really who cares, Nascar looses in this sterotype, but thats no bigee

I don't think I have ever heard anyone boo a team in dragracing. But, the fans definitely love to cheer for the underdog teams that's for sure. I have been on larger budget teams that won and it was cool, but when a smaller budget team that I was on won a race in Brainerd Mn in 2010, I could not believe the the excitement from the fans and the other teams. Even the teams that we beat were standing on the starting line to watch the finals, and when our win light came on the whole place went nuts. I got so excited that I took my racing radio headset off and threw it up towards the stands. It didn't quite make it all the way, but a fan jumped over the fence and grabbed it anyway. Later I was inside the hauler and one of my teammates came in and handed me the headset and said a fan want's to know if I would autograph it. So I did. What that fan didn't know is that I was just as excited to give them an autograhp as they were to receive it. When fans cheer it makes teams feel really good, so I imagine when they get booed then it probably makes them feel pretty crappy. I hope I never have to find out though.;):)

Booing is one thing but compared to the following, booing is tame. From a F/B follower about the fans at Bowman Gray Stadium. Photo not needed. BTW, the majority of comments agreed but there were some who didn't see anything wrong.

I hope this photo doesn't offend anyone, but this seems to have become the norm at Bowman Gray. Do you realize what you are implying here? Do you really despise someone that much? I understand frustrations and dislikes of certain drivers, but have you ever heard of the word "BOO"? And honestly, how many of the drivers do you think really see this, especially when laps are being run under green. There are fans on the front row where I sit that lean over the wall so far to do this to ANY driver that touches their driver...it's not going to surprise me when they topple over the wall and land on their head! I have even seen kids that look 4 or 5 years old doing this....nice thing to teach your kids mom and dad!! It also makes you look like the hind part of a mule....there is nothing funny about it either. And if any drivers see this post, how unprofessional for you or your crew members to reciprocate. Just voicing my displeasure of a senseless act......I know it will never stop.

Dried up prunes are mature
A dry kitty is mature.

I think women should boo drivers they dont like.
I think they should also moon drivers they dont like for a prolonged time.
They could also jump and down while cheering their favorite drivers. Doing it without a bra, would insure a more vivid expression.

I haven't been to an IndyCar race yet (hope to go to St. Pete soon enough) but after going to races at Daytona for twelve years I would imagine it can't be that hard to be more mature than the average NASCAR fan.

There's still Indycar fans? I used to watch Indy back in the 80's and early 90's when they had Al Jr., Fittipaldi, Andrettis, Goodyear, Bentley, Cheever, etc. Indycar isn't that interesting anymore.

Sure there are. 250,000 of them showed up at Indianapolis last weekend.

I didn't watch the All-Star race because it's not really my thing, but hearing that just about every driver got booed doesn't reflect too well on the NASCAR fandom. I'm as guilty as anyone of taking jabs at certain drivers here on the forum, but there are none of them that I truly despise. Most of my digs are just an ill-fated attempt at humor.

I'd love to get to Bowman Gray just once but, truth be told, it sounds like the WWE of motorsports.

In My Opinion, dumbass thread title.

I have never noticed a problem with Nascar fans at a race...but I know a guy that works for a large vendor that supplies a product to fans and teams at just about all of the major motorsports venues, and I asked him how he liked working the Nascar circut. I was kind of surprised when he said that he tries to avoid working the Nascar races because 90% of the fans are some of the most rude and inpatient fans that he has ever dealt with. So I guess we do have a little bit of a bad reputation. Most of you on here are probably in the other 10% like I am though.:D

Awesome replies folks. :) Gives me a lot of food for thought

careful, people tend to get terrible gas when they digest too much of our posts. ;)

If people don't feel passionate enough to cheer or boo at a sporting event, perhaps they aren't getting their moneys worth.

Nascar fans are more into Nascar than the other fans. That makes them more passionate about their racing.
(That was a politically correct statement!!!) Fertilizer is mature but it really stunk when it was immature.:D

My racing buddies and I used to boo all of Penske's drivers in the late 80's and early 90's, but I don't remember why. Except for Emo, I remember why we booed the orange juice king. Now it's more popular to cheer for unknowns and underdogs than boo the guys who win everything. With one exception: my better half boo's Chip at every opportunity.

The most obnoxious behavior I've ever seen at a race was after the rainbow warrior won the cup race at Chicagoland.

I'm a huge fan of both series & having been to both CART & NASCAR races I can say that yes booing is alot more evident at NASCAR events BUT the atmosphere is always more live at NASCAR races, there's always alot more going on you know everyone's runnng around yellin with face & bodypaint & beer not to mention Speed channel's there & those hott Miss NASCAR racequeens. I've always just chalked it up to the past, IndyCar has always been more of a sophisticated classy rich man's sport & NASCAR has always been more of the everyday hardworking blue collar man sport. Also, the popularity of IndyCar right now is still in the toilet. I myself have always hated & booed Tom Sneva whenever I see him, he IMO was a dirty Indy driver...

Sneva is now about 65 years old and hasn't raced in over 20 years.

When you see him now-a-days, are your boos basically just trying to get a rise out of him?

Broad generalizations seldom do any good but any Nascar fan who'd whine about others not having an avatar on a forum in which they find the members so contempible may be cause for some head scratching:confused: I guess it's all about self esteem.

Well said. It doesn't bother me at all for people to boo a driver they don't like. Do I boo any drivers? Just one, and I'd do that sober. Let outta big Ric Flair "Wooooo!" when he blew that late tire yesterday too. Scared the chit outta my father who in the meantime had dozed off. But, Johnson, or Kyle Busch, doesn't even come close to drawing the ire Jeff Gordon did when he was dominate. It used to embarass me to watch the way the fans carried on after he'd won a race. I remember early part of the decade, fans threw beer cans/bottles, water & pop bottle--whatever was handy--at his car after winning races. Damn near felt sorry for the guy. Junior had to speak up (at the urging of NASCAR) and tell them to tone it down. Took a couple races, but they did what he asked.

Having said that..I'd BOO! Louisville in a game of horse shoes.

To be fair to RPK, Sneva is the biggest knob in racing and the biggest knob in motorsports broadcasting. I used to like him in an anti-hero wrestling villain sort of way until he was openly mocking CART while doing the color commentary for the IRL. I hope he chokes on his prune juice on the golf course in Arizona or where ever he is.*

* - I'm joking, but only barely.
