Are You Currently a Fan of Nascar Racing?

Been a fan of F1 and NASCAR for a long time. My interest has never been lower for both.

I've been a fan since the mid 60's, but I have to admit that the past few years I haven't been near as big a fan of it. When they changed from the original championship to the chase type format it made a big dent in my enthusiasm. A championship isn't a dash over the last 10 or 12 races to determine the champion. When JJ won all the championships it showed me that the format was a joke. Not saying he and the 48 team aren't one of the all time best, but something is wrong when you can that many when nobody else was able to win near that many in such a short amount of time. The changes to the cars and the death of some really great drivers like Davey and Dale took away some of the fun. Also the drivers are different to me. They whine about everything like gee nobody can touch me or you have to make room for me because, well it me. I'll still watch but not like I used to plus I don't have the DVR.

I enjoyed Nascar more when the drivers were men instead of celebrity fanbois.

It's not just the eliminations, the new Chase also sucks because they let so damn many drivers into it now. Makes the regular season meaningless when pretty much everybody gets in.

And the idiots in the booth talking about cut lines and the differential in points between Menard and McMurray for the final chase birth is nauseating. There is nothing wrong with those drivers but there is more chance of a driver missing a quarter of the season and winning the lottery champ......oh snap.....that happened already.

Yes I am a big fan of nascar. I dislike the chase altogether, but, that is the way it is.

As long as 40 American Hot Rods get together each week and get after it, I will watch. Almost all my TV watching is done via DVR and I do this because I like to control my viewing. The Dega races are the only races I try to watch live on TV. My wife and I enjoy watching the races early the next morning while we are having our coffee.

I am fortunate to be able to go to a couple of live races each year, which is what keeps me as a fan, nothing like it anywhere. I try and stay neutral on issues that I have no control over in Racing, not always, but, most of the time.

I live 157 miles from Daytona Int. Speedway and have been there a lot of times, most recently the 2016 July 400, what they have done there is fantastic.

I live 164 miles from Homestead Motor Speedway, I will never go back, the place sucks, awful place to view a race live, unless you sit in turn one and they are not fan friendly. They have the most dumbass traffic control in the known universe.(don't get me started)

Atlanta, Charlotte and Bristol are my favorite tracks (not necessarily in that order), if you go to a race at these tracks you would see why that is.
Martinsville is on my Bucket list.

Yep, I like Nascar racing, all division's. :D

One thing that always surprised me about Homestead is the small crowd and the lack of permanent seating. I figured Nascar would want to have the ultimate lottery race where at least 80K seats were available.

Who knew it was going to be a one race deal with the championship on the line . Heck , they should have it at Daytona in February , get it out of the way.

I'd hope everyone on this forum is a fan of NASCAR. Even if we sometimes get a little curmudgeonly and critical, it's only because we all want the sport to get better and succeed and there's nothing wrong with that.

As for myself? At this time last year I had the same opinion of NASCAR as a lot of folks from up here; Non-Athletic-Sport-Centered-Around-Rednecks, boring, just turning left for 3 hours, unsophisticated. Well fast forward and I'm about to attend the 2nd race of the year at Iowa. How's that for boring?

Pit road speeds led to not racing back to the stripe...
I'm off topic to the thread, but the only way one "led to" the other is that they both are so f*cking obvious that any responsible sanctioning body would implement both, IMO.

It is amazing what attending a Race live, does for ones perspective! :D

Yes I'm a fan, absolutely.

Born in 1986 and I can still remember some races as early as 1991. I didn't miss a single race on TV from 1994 to 2002. That includes most BGN and CTS races, and ASA and ARCA when televised.

Dale's death in 2001, the Chase in 2004, and the CoT in 2007 took a toll on my fandom, along with a work schedule that had me working a lot of Sundays throughout the decade. I still followed, but wasn't nearly as hardcore of a fan as I was in the 90s. Around 2011 I started watching every race again, and kind of regained the passion.

There's a lot of things I dislike about today's Nascar or wish was different, but I still love it.

Always, as I like to say football season begins at Thanksgiving, nascar will always be #1

That is outstanding and I am glad you are having a great time with the series. I did for many, many years and have a boatload of happy memories.

Honestly, anywhere but Homestead at this point. There's just nothing special about that track IMO.

I was thinking Vegas for just the whole package. Vegas knows how to put on a show, lots of Hotels close by, Hospitality on steroids, Plenty of things to do and see. Vegas was build for showmanship and entertainment.

When you asked me about how had pit road speeds had led to the beginning of the end I was going to be a smart aleck and say "if you have to ask you wouldn't understand" as the reason is as plain as day. I am not saying that pit road speeds should be abandoned but it is clear that pit road speeds led to the current malaise we have today. Dale's death and the bloated little Alkie bringing the CoT spec car to the series was the kill shot that finished off many that were barely hanging on. No new ground broken here as the obvious is being stated.

Deviating quite a bit here; since I wasn't even alive when they went to pit road speed limits I'm really curious, back then could drivers pit under green and stay on the lead lap?

What is even funnier is people complaining about the people who complain lol. As I said to either you or someone else recently be very thankful for the people who are less than enthused with Nascar as if it wasn't for them this place would be a ghost town and the series would have even less people interested than it already does. No France Kool Aid swilled here!!!
No.

I took off the year 2014 as once the lottery system was implemented it was curtains for me. I signed up here in the end of 2014 and there were lots of good people to swap opinions with so I started watching again last year but started suffering from Nascar burnout. I was pumped at the beginning of the year as there were some really good races and in particular I liked Atlanta. I am hoping between now and the beginning of NCAAF and the NFL a few more good races will be put on.

Not on tracks like Wilkesboro and the other short tracks but it was a piece of cake elsewhere. If you get a chance check out YouTube and catch some of the action when there was no pit road speeds.

People complaining about people complaining has always tickled my funny bone but then again I like irony and good old Canadian satire.

It's crazy to see them pit with no speed limit. At the Superspeedways they would just haul ass into it. There was a pretty bad pit accident at Talladega in '88 or '89 before the tragic accident at Atlanta to conclude 1990.

Dover and Bristol were really dangerous because of the narrowness and transition off/on the banking.

I watch a ton of race on youtube. I love the ones from '88 through the '92 season. The Winston/Diehard 500's from that era are awesome imo. I couldn't imagine running at Talladega in July in those cars. The is old asphalt Bristol races are cool as hell too. You can actually see "Thunder Valley". Those are the years I really remember as a kid.

There comes a point when it's OK to complain about the complainers. Way less complaining now that there was 10 years ago to my relief. :)

I loved going to Thunder Valley and I think Bristol had about 37,000 permanent seats when I first started attending in the 80's. By the time Bruton Smith bought the track it was in need of some major upgrades but it was a shame to see the track lose its flavor. It was the same thing with the old Atlanta as it used to be a great race when it was a mile long.

Yes, but I'm nowhere near the fan I once was.
Too many silly changes. I don't watch The Chase. My race season is 26 races.
That is pretty much the same for me as seeing Nascar doesn't take the crowning of a champion as a serious matter why should I? I like Martinsville so I will make an attempt to see that chase race and if football permits I will see bits and pieces of other races. I never watch the race at Homestead as turning my back on it is my own personal protest of so much of what I dislike about today's Nascar.
Question for y'all: do you watch the Duels, or the exhibition races?

Those don't count toward the championship. Assuming you watch them (and tell me if don't), can't you watch the Chase races with the same approach, as if they were exhibitions? They're still races. A few times a year I'll catch races in other series that I don't watch regularly, don't know where the drivers are in the standings, may not even know who they are. That doesn't keep me from enjoying that one race as a single event.

But to each his own.

I don't like the Duels, if I see there are heat races in Xfin, I'm less likely to watch. I do watch the All Star race if I have nothing else to do but it's not a must-see event.

I have not watched any of the pre Daytona stuff since the Busch Clash and Twin 125's and haven't seen an all star event since I can't remember when but I know DW and Ernie Irvan were in it.

I think the chase has been an awful thing for the series but it hasn't been bad for me personally. A 26 race season is plenty for me and by the time the lottery is on football and hockey have started and they are my first loves so forfeiting Nascar until the second race of the new year is OK with me. I do view any Nascar race I see as a stand alone event that doesn't lead to anything as in my world it doesn't lead to anything legitimate.

What I hope to get out of Nascar racing is a decent race, a tolerable broadcast and really not much else.

Been a fan since Derrick Cope won the Daytona 500 in '89 or '90. I refer to it as my religion. I went years not giving a single thought to the championship. I've been a fan of nearly all the drivers, - at the same time. That's a large part of the appeal for me. For example, in baseball, my other true love (and forgive my polyamory), I root for one team, when they lose, which happens almost 50% of the time (hey I didn't say it was a great team) it's a big emotional let down. Football is even worse. Not for me in NASCAR, if Kyle isn't having a good day (pretty rare) I can root for Little E, Chase Elliot, or any of the 39 other drivers. Sure some races are better than others, sure I miss Benny and Ned in the booth on TNN, but my commitment hasn't wavered in 25 years. And (please put down those tomatoes) I absofreakinglutley love the chase. Love it. It's added a dimension (to the sport/event/what have you/just don't call me late for supper) that was lacking. For me. For me, and that's not debatable - it's the best thing NASCAR has done since I've been watching to improve the product, except maybe for changing back from that picnic table they had on the back of the cars for a while.

I loved the wings. I couldn't understand why everyone said it didn't look like it belonged on a race car when every other series has them. You don't see kids pimping their street cars with spoilers.

To each his or her own. It's all good, just to different degrees.

I can't help but lol every time I see someone driving down the road with one of those wings. Never understood the appeal.

Oh, I laugh at them on the road too. Hey, kid, do you really think you're going to get up to a speed where that thing will be effective (without crapping your pants)?
