Watching the race now. Perfect weather and the attendance was that bad?

Atlanta needs to lose it's Spring race.

Well you might as well say Daytona needs to lose a date too because it wasn't sold out either. Atlanta has great racing doubt they will lose a date, so far I do not think any of the races this year have actually been sold out and that incudes Vegas.

There's a difference between not selling out, and having atrocious attendance like Atlanta, California and Michigan consistently have.

Atlanta is usually a pretty damn good race, regardless of turnout. I would only agree if they replaces it with Road Atlanta.

The TV numbers were up for Atlanta. Michigan still has more race fans show up than the smaller tracks. A few years ago Michigan rained out two days in a row and fifty thousand people showed up on Tuesday to watch the race. And this was right next to Detroit which is getting killed.

The economy sucks right now.

Me, I just LOVE racing. :beerbang:

Good racing, sure. But there are markets that would show up and support their tracks while we've got two races at tracks in markets that don't support their tracks.

Portland International Raceway - over 40,000 people showed up for a NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race last year. 40,000, for a very amateur series that struggles to get 4,000 people to show up for most of its races. Meanwhile, we have tracks that struggle to get 40,000 fans to show up for a Cup race.

California, Atlanta, Dover and Michigan would be much better off with just one Cup race. Their first or second dates (whichever they struggle with the most) would go to much better use in Iowa, Gateway, Kentucky or Portland.

As far as giving Kansas a second date.... bull****. If Portland can get 40,000 people to show up for a very minor league series like NASCAR West, they could easily sell 90,000 tickets to, at the least, a Nationwide or Truck Series race.

I have been AMS about 15 times in my life (that is where I grew up). I know all tracks have traffic problems, but I promise you Atlanta is one of the worse. As far as big cities that have tracks that I have been to (Charlotte, Daytona, and Miami), they were a walk in the park after the race compared to Atlanta. A lot of the locals are tired of the b.s. about expanding the roads out of Hampton. They have promised year after year, and nothing gets solved. That is one problem Atlanta has. As I have said many times, I do not think the economy has much to do with the lack of attendance. Plus, the week of the race they had 3 inches of snow which equals Armageddon in the city of Atlanta. Hell, you should buy in stocks whoever has bread and milk companies since the locals go in panic mode. Don't forget, a lot of people were upset when Atlanta was no longer the last race of the season---which I will never understood since the last race of the year never meant anything since 1991 (pre-Chase era).

California, Atlanta, Dover, and Pocono would be much better off with just one Cup race.

I say take the first Pocono race, give it to Gateway. Take the fall Atlanta race, give it to Kentucky. Dover's first date goes to Iowa. The Fontana Chase race goes somewhere.

I know you like Pocono Andy, but the fact is they have what amounts to the same exact race twice with only 6 races between, and one or both are generally snoozers. Give them a Nationwide race to make up for the Cup date.

I didn't think it was that bad in the stands. I mean sure it wasn't full but what track is these days? And it was LOTS better than Cali.....

The Mid Ohio Sports Car Course will gladly take the Fontana date. Talk about a location that is hungry for some NASCAR.

Bruton took a great track and turned it into a cookie cutter, Atlanta was a great track before it was reconfigured

Atlanta usually puts on a good show. It would be a shame to see them lose a race IMO. The drivers seem to like the track.

We were getting ready to see another great finish there on Sunday until the incident there at the end. I know that if I lived closer to that track I'd be going there.

Exactly, they're all out of work and can show up on a Tuesday because they dont have a job! :D

I've had the opportunity to go to Atlanta several times and I thought it was me being impatient. The traffic sucks so bad there. No real plan to get people out quickly.

I have heard all the horror stories about the Atlanta traffic. I went last year and got out of there with no problems. I guess it helped we were parked in the handicapped parking right behind our seats.

Atlanta has always had trouble with the spring race. One of the problems is the uncertainty of the weather for when it is. It can be 75 one year and 45 the next year. There is talk of a major reworking of the schedule for next year. I heard Atlanta's first race may get moved to June and if it fails then, the date will be moved somewhere else.

Tell that to the fans who show up to that race, EVERY TIME.

I have to agree. Maybe move one Pocono like to September and keep the other one in June. Maybe add a chicane to the front stretch :D

Six weeks apart, yet the fans still sell the place out.

I can think of a lot of other tracks that'll lose their second dates before NASCAR takes a race away from the NYC/Philadelphia market.

If they take away a race from martinsville or Pocono they will lose this fan for the other races.

Greensboro has the biggest percentage of grass root fans of any city. The people I talk with say the same thing. martinsville loses a date they are finished with Nascar.

Pocono seats 67K. Michigan seats over twice that at 136K. The infield is larger at MIS. DUH!

Pocono is a great track but so is MIS.

Michigan tickets start at $25, and they have support races with the Trucks and/or Nationwide.

Pocono tickets start at $45 and their only support races in the past have been the ARCA Racing Series.

Next.

I believe that, but I also heard the same thing before they closed N. Wilkesboro.

That's exactly why i stopped going to ATL, the racing is good, the camping is fun...but the traffic leaving the track is horrendous. IMO, the traffic is so bad its not worth it.

For what it is worth, I'll take Pocono over Michigan any day. In fact, Michigan could loose both of its dates and I wouldn't miss it at all.

i don't really care for any of the tracks over a mile but the road courses. i would like daga and daytona if they would get rid of those damn plates

nothing like the sound of 43 unrestricted cars at full song !!!!

Speaking of Pocono, I saw the Truck race and the July ARCA race is only 125 miles... why bother running them?

I think that they are running them both the same day along with Truck qualifying & Cup practice. It looks like a full day of racing. Those races being that short should give all of those teams a sense of urgency that IMO will make the races even better.
