UDTRA DIRT RACING SERIES HEADS TO ATOMIC MOTOR SPEEDWAY FOR PIVOTAL BATTLE IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WAR

(Knoxville, TN - July 17, 2002) The leading dirt racing competitors of the nation will roll into Knoxville's Atomic Motor Speedway this week for a 50 lap duel which should have a major impact on deciding the national crown of dirt late model racing. The United Dirt Track Racing Association (UDTRA), which competes nationally on America's dirt ovals, will square off in the "Southeastern Dodge Dealers Duel" with the top four competitors in the national title hunt separated by just 107 points. Dale McDowell (Rossville, GA), who won the UDTRA title in 1999 while the tour was still sponsored by the Hav-A-Tampa Cigar Company, holds a mere one point advantage over defending UDTRA champion Rick Eckert (York, PA) with Steve Francis (Ashland, KY) and Jimmy Mars (Elk Mound, WI) lurking just behind the lead duo in the season-long title chase.

McDowell and Eckert are previous winners at the lightning fast 1/3 mile high-banked Atomic Motor Speedway. In fact, veteran racer Freddy Smith from Knoxville currently posted in fifth in the UDTRA standings is a former winner at Atomic, as are the sixth and seventh place drivers in the standings Earl Pearson (Jacksonville, FL) and Donnie Moran (Dresden, OH). The 24-car starting field will be shooting for a purse exceeding $50,000 with the winner walking away from Atomic Motor Speedway's victory lane $10,000 richer. The nation's top-rated dirt racers will vie for a starting position in the lucrative event when action gets under way at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening. The super late model UDTRA drivers will kick off the action with time-trail qualifications followed by qualifying heat races and a pair of last-chance qualifying B-mains to set the field for the 50 lap main event. In addition to the UDTRA sanctioned event, local competitors in the Modified Street Stock and Pure Mini 4-Cylinder division will also be in action.

In addition to the battle for the national championship a spirited battle for the UDTRA Rookie of the Year award includes Knoxville native and former multi-time track champion of Atomic Motor Speedway Billy Ogle, Jr. Ogle drives the Calhouns Restaurant / Die Cast Digest sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo for Bill Reed Racing and is considered to be a favorite to win the Friday night event at his home track. Ogle has not only gained ground on the top rookie award but has also moved himself into the twelfth position overall in the UDTRA title standings.

Not only will the UDTRA traveling drivers be on hand for the big payoff to win the Atomic Motor Speedway event on Friday evening, but also interlopers from the Tennessee and southeastern United States will be shooting for the big bucks. Duayne Hommel from Newport, TN is the current points leader on the Southern All-Stars (SAS) tour and ran second to former 4-time UDTRA champ Scott Bloomquist at Atomic in a major event in April. Bloomquist who is currently at odds with the UDTRA sanction is expected to duck into Atomic for the one-night show in Knoxville on Friday. Lenoir City's Patrick Duggan, Knoxville's Mark Vineyard, Randle Chupp, Pigeon Forge ace Scott Sexton and rising star Corey Norman will join Maryville's Roger Best, Steve Harrison and others in the 50 lap brawl on Friday night.

The event should serve as one of the best short-track races of the season for Tennessee race fans with a special fan appreciation autograph session slated for 6:00 p.m. on Friday in the concourse area at Atomic Motor Speedway.

Some reserved seats are still available with other general admission seating also available. For ticketing and event information visit http://www.atomicmotorspeedway.com

Donnie Moran! He'll be too busy taking pictures of Eckert leading the race! :D Just kiddin' with ya.

Yeah, now that I think about it you're probably right about Skip. And Freddy will probably be there too. Maybe those two will take the whole field to the Freddy and Skip driving school.

I got a few pictures of Moran. I need time to scan all of them.
