August 28, 1971: Tiny Lund wins the Buddy Shuman 276 in the final Grand National/Cup race at Hickory (N.C.) Speedway. Only two drivers lead laps. Dave Marcis leads 152 but retires after 173 laps with rear-end troubles. Lund leads the other 124 laps in the 100-mile race. Elmo Langley finishes second and Richard Petty third. Marcis finishes 16th in the 22-car field. Hickory is the site of 35 Grand National/Cup races.
