I've just made a huuuuuuge update to the Posting section of the Guided Tour. See from the third paragraph of "Controls and Options" on down to the end. Let me know if that helps explain how to work the controls.

Some of them are greyed out if they don't apply - the outdent button is greyed out if you're already outdented as far as you can go. And the link button needs to have text selected in order for it work.
