Best Race Ever!

Hey Topgear, is that a Sunbeam Tiger in your avatar? Sitting in a junkyard???

Tony to Jack Roush during the red flag rain delay, "Tell your boy to get up on the wheel because I'm on my way and I'm coming." Tony wasn't kidding. :D

I believe most of us would say a better way to describe it is two of those three were actually balls the size of a head. :D

:owquitit: I've been trying to tell yall thats been Tonys speed secret since The Chase started!!!

He grew a set got rid of the ball and got back to being a Racer!

I'm going to have to rewatch this race to see if it was one of the best ever.

I had it on (and DVR'd it) but I guess I wasn't paying too much attention.
I put it on again and stay focused.

I never said it was the best ever, I said it was the best for me. One of the things that made this race so good for me was I was watching this race with my best friend who is no longer with us, plus we were both huge Mark Martin fans.

The other thing that I enjoyed was everyone in that race went balls out, at the 3 quarter mark of the race there were something like 38 cars still on the lead lap with the last of those cars only behind the leaders by several 100ths of a second, and before the rain caution they were averaging 196mph for the whole race.

Sorry Blue 92 but I meant best ever about last weeks championship finale.

I really enjoyed the 95 Winston. Glad you have a ggreat memory of watching the race with your late friend.

Yeah, other than the grill opening, hood, and light arraingment, it looked just like a lancia. ;)
I had to go look up 1960 Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagoto he's right thats what it is!
At first I thought it was a 65 or so MGB that someone adulterated the hood on, then I thought maybe it's a Sunbeam Tiger? ( they where kinda the forerunner of the Cobras ) I'll have to admit I'm not up on British sports cars.....did'nt know Lancia even made one I thought they made all those funny looking taxi's they have over there

1992 LAST RACE OF SEASON
Don't remember a lot but somethings you never forget

They are replaying the radio broadcast of this race on NASCAR Radio tomorrow. As good as Homestead was I don't think it was nearly as good as the race @ Atlanta in 92'. Three drivers with a more than realistic shot at the title after a hard fought 29 race season. That was a true 'Game seven' moment in NASCAR, not a made for TV drama created in the mind of Brian France.

I believe I saw the same model on 'hunting classic cars' or one of those shows. I knew it was italian and not british, buts that's all I could remember. The Sunbeam does have simular fender lines, but so do a lot of cars. I've seen Sunbeams with the flat scoop, but I don't think it's original to the model.

The Cobra was actually a modified AC Ace roadster frame specially ordered by Carroll Shelby. The Sunbeam Tiger tried to copy the success of what CS created with the Cobra.

I agree 100%. The '92 finale at Atlanta was, I believe, the best stock car race ever telecast, bar none. Your last sentence about sums it up.

The one I wish there was a video of is the '59 Daytona 500. I would have looked to see that finish in action.

All the past great wins are just that... great wins. But Tony's final win this year was something not seen in the modern era. That sort of win just doesn't happen anymore... or does it? Tony may have broken new ground here. Should drivers be expected to actually "drive" to the win? I think so and I think Tony proved it can be done. Comparing his win to races several decades ago is not an accurate comparison. The racing has changed. I'm just glad I got to witness it. And I'm going to celebrate my Thanksgiving by watching the race again tomorrow.

Please accept my appreciation for that clip. For some reason I never thought to look on YouTube (Kinda shows my age I guess), so that was the very first time I saw that finish.

Yeah, I guess the final race this season was good, by today's standards, but seeing stock appearing cars race wheel-to-wheel for a photo finish, without benefit of the gimmicks they use today to manufacture a close finish... To me it's tough to make a comparison.

Thanks again for sharing that clip/ You've made my day... Hell, you've made my year! I've always wanted to see that footage; I didn't know that it even existed.

I'd venture to guess that if you're going to call the thread, 'Best Race Ever!', it's open to comparing it to the history of the sport or maybe that's just me. ;)

I'd don't mind people comparing it or disagreeing. They're not going to change my mind though. :D

I might be in the minority here, but I believe that this years last race was the best. As an avid Bill Elliott fan, I watched that '92 race with hopes Bill would win his second title. I was sure Allison had the title wrapped up and got my hopes lifted when he wrecked. Kulwiki undoubtedly will for ever be remembered as the Underdog and for good reason. Alan won the title that year because he was smarter than Junior Johnson. Elliott wanted to stay out in the lead one more lap, but Junior told him to pit now. That one lap cost him the title. Still, I believe the intensity of this years final was higher. However, I don't disagree that much between the two. The good thing is that the season ended with a most exciting race.

Not a problem, OldSchoolNascar has a very good collection of historic Nascar and Indy car video's check out the channel!

The last race of this season certainly had drama, but I am just not sure that it is the "best race ever"...I mean we have all seen MANY good races in our lives, or we wouldn't be fans. Heck, I think both M'ville races this year were just as good as the finale. Granted, they certainly did not have the implications that the finale does, but they were good RACES.

You're right. I didn't even watch the race Sunday as I knew going in that Tony and Carl would have superior cars to everyone else so that they would battle it out to the end. None of the other 41 drivers had a chance of winning. And that's exactly what happened. I have better things to do with my time on the weekends than to watch fixed races.[/QUOTE]

Question, why are you even on this forum? Or even following Nascar at all if you think they're all fixed?

I was not able to watch the race live last Sunday so I set my DVR to record it. Of course, the race ran longer than expected so I had to wait for the replay on SPEED. (Thanks, SPEED! I love you!)

I have to say that this race ranks right up there among the best ever NASCAR Races - due to what was on the line and the way that Smoke fought back from adversity to take the title from Eddie Haskell.

Was it the best-ever race? That's debatable. Was it the best ever CHASE race? Abso-friggin-lootley!!!

You know the guy never watched the race. For the first half , Tony wasn't even in it . Carl was fighting off Kenseth ,Harvick , Gordon and Truex .Later on Stewart got to the front for a while and Carl fell back. It really didn't become a two car race till just near the last green flag run. If a caution had come out , it would have been anybodies race .

Had the last rain-related caution period not happened (right after Smoke's final pit stop), Tony would have been hard-pressed to work his way back up to the front. And by the time he got there, he would have had a used-up racecar. THAT was THE turning point of the race, I think. Andy and Dale were commenting about how perfectly that worked out for him.

And I was amazed when it started raining while Tony was being interviewed in Victory Lane. Talk about timing...

Exactly...this guy was trying to say that it was a two horse race from the get go.

Wait a second... I just watched the whole race again this morning. Don't forget why Darian made him wait to pit. So he could go the rest of the way without pitting. So he would have had a huge lead when Carl and everyone else pitted. The rain actually helped those who still had to pit.

It all came down to luck of the yellow. You could pick a time for that last yellow that would have helped one or the other win. If NO yellow came out, it may have cost Tony the race. Carl was on Tony's bumper after Stewarts last stop, so he could have pitted and been side by side with Tony with fresher tires and a better fuel situation. Tony said his car was stalling coming to the pits, and that was after 55 laps. After pitting, he had 56 to go. That yellow allowed him to save plenty of fuel to make it to the end.
