Gotta be the caution. My issue with it is their reasoning. They claimed the track was changing color in turn 2. It changed color so bad that nobody ran off course, nobody took rain tires, and no track drying was required. Incredible.

The cloud looked dark and ominous on TV anyway. If a stray bolt of lightning shot out of that thing with all of the people there somebody could be injured would be my guess as to why the threw the flag. As it was, the cloud and rain lessened. It could have just as easily became larger and more threatening.

It was raining hard in the infield and nascar turn 1. Where I was sitting it was raining and quite a few people left to head under the stands but it lasted 5 minutes.

If they hadn't threw the yellow and someone crashed due to a little moisture on the track we would have never heard the end of it...kind of like we are right now. ;)

Slowing the cars down wouldn’t prevent lightning lmao and nobody made an order for fans to take shelter. The caution was purely for entertainment purposes.

The skies were dark over turn 3 for hours and everyone had rain equipment. If teams were worried, they would have came down pit road for wets. Every car had rain on their cameras after coming through turn 6 for several laps and nobody came down - they werent concerned enough. Let the professional drivers and teams make their own decisions.

NASCAR for playing babysitter. Let them race and let them decide what tires they want and when to take them.

Yeah, it doesn't work that way with stock cars just yet. You pull that, and you will have the "Big One" at the 500 look like a little one. I would hope with the new car, and all of the road courses on the schedule that someday we could get there.

Maybe if we are talking Sonoma, but Daytona has those big banks.

This is moving the goal posts though. Your arguing that the cars simply can’t race in the rain. That’s a different argument. My argument is that NASCAR should let the professionals decide what to do, especially when they allowed the teams to come equipped with rain equipment just in case. Having a caution for rain and not a single team opted for rain tires and NASCAR made no effort to dry the track just proves that the teams and NASCAR both knew that stopping the race wasn’t necessary.

Entertainment > Sport.

A bolt of lightning would've been detected long before that baby cloud just appeared over the track. That isn't why they threw the yellow. I thought the days of the phantom debris cautions were over, but they just come in different forms now.

It's honestly disgusting that the fastest car often doesn't win in this series. That's what people should be upset about. Yes, sometimes guys make mistakes and don't execute and lose on their own, but NASCAR is compounding the issue by creating the opportunity for failure both by teams on pit road and by the drivers. The 9 team executed flawlessly all day, all the way thru green flag stops. There was no need for them to be placed in that position to have to prove themselves again just because they didn't like the way Chase was running away with the thing. They don't want a race like yesterday, they want a complete cluster **** like the truck race Friday night.

"Well he was the fastest all day, surely he can do it. Can't he do it?!"

No, eventually some things are too much to overcome.

“Turn 2 was wet and at that time I didn’t want a caution”

Apparently Denny still didn’t want a caution for a “wet track” and his team even thought the conditions didn’t warrant rain tires.

If the caution was indeed for rain, nobody else agreed lol.

Section 10.6.5.a of the Cup rulebook states that when a race has started under dry conditions, NASCAR will call a caution when officials determine “conditions are too ‘wet’ to continue under ‘dry’ condition equipment.”

“The one in the Cup race was pretty unique and actually a difficult call,” Miller said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio of the caution for rain. “One of the things that was unique about it was it was kind of raining hard in a couple of corners and not on the rest of the track at all.

“So what we really wanted to avoid — and why we threw that caution — was we didn’t want the drivers thinking that the track was dry. There was no way the spotters can know, there’s no way anybody can really know that it’s raining hard in those couple of corners except us with our turn spotters reporting back and our chase vehicles reporting back.
“So we didn’t want to send the field into those corners with a wet surface and then be completely unaware. That’s why the caution came out there.”

Yet the race continued just a few minutes later with dry equipment lmao
Meh. It's not unusual for Nascar to go to caution for a shower, and then after a few laps under yellow, the shower dissipates and green flag racing resumes. It happens every year. Quit crying. Sometimes the rain stops, and sometimes it doesn't. The only sure thing is that *someone* will complain.

Nascar has had that rule in place for years for road courses. They followed their established, written procedure. One can argue the rule should be different, but that's a separate argument. It takes about ~40 seconds to pit for rain tires at most tracks. Nascar wants to avoid incentivizing risk takers to stay out on slicks to avoid a green flag stop. As a safety concern, it's not a trivial matter. Anyone that's ran slick tires on a damp track in changing conditions knows this.

Remember the Winston all-star race when it rained in turn one right after the green flag? Backup cars, what the hell is that all about!!

This is where this argument falls apart.

NASCAR said that they threw the caution because their officials determined that conditions were too wet to continue with dry equipment.

Yet after a few laps under caution and nobody installing wet condition equipment, they resumed racing? Track conditions too wet to continue with dry equipment do not magically dry up after a few minutes even if the rain dissipates. Either the track still has to dry or teams have to install rain equipment. Neither happened.

Their statement and reasoning makes no sense.

you continue to miss the boat. For instance throwing a caution for debris because it is a hazard? Does that mean they all have to come in and check their cars for loose debris? Try using the same logic. The caution was called because the track was getting hazardous in turns one and two because of a potential rain event...SOME cars stayed out(that's what happens when a caution flag instead of a red flag is flown) ..that should tell a person that the track was getting assessed to see if they could continue to keep racing. It wasn't about installing wet condition equipment. Troll on though I'm done here.

And yet, every other form of motorsport in the world that races on road courses, doesn't throw a caution so teams can put wet weather tires on. NASCAR is alone in this.
