Some interesting candidates to chose from to start this new season. We have NASCAR for throwing a caution on the last lap of the race when the crash happened on the backstretch. There is Austin Dillon for causing the last crash. We also have Daytona International Speedway for not having SAFER barriers all the way around the track. There's Fox for what seemed to be an endless amount of commercials. I'm sure I'm leaving someone out.

My pick is Daytona for not having the safer barriers all the way around the track. Inexcusable.

@PPistone

How many of you were screaming for safety yesterday in the SAFER Barrier discussion but now want racing to the finish while cars crash?
I see how that argument could be made, but one could also argue that the crash was far enough behind the leaders that no one's safety would really have been at risk if the race had finished under green.

It doesn't have to be strictly one way or the other. There's plenty of room for a nice middle ground here.

Wasn't it hambone who got Tony loose? Wife had friends over and it was a crackle fest and I had to be nice and polite, gad, for a while and I missed it

Except that Larson hit the wall so hard that they felt that they immediately needed to release the medical team on to the track. What if it were serious enough that a timely response was needed. There's really no way to tell definitively in the moment but regardless of what NASCAR does they will always come up the loser.

1. The lack of Safer-Barrriers. Installation of Safer-Barriers is a no brainer... thus, the lack of them, automatically makes it a Bone Head of the Week winner.

2. NASCAR throwin' the yellow. Dis-Honorable Mention must go to the NASCAR official who threw the yellow flag! The race was shapin' up to be a classic, last lap, 3 way (at least) battle comin' outta Turn Four, for the win.

3. Austin Dillon. His chuckle-headed move, while dumb, shouldn't have affected the outcome of the race... as far as who won.
4.The commercials. They're irritating, but someone's gotta pay the bills...

That's a fair rebuttal, and I wholeheartedly agree with the bolded. Thanks for the extra info about Larson. I didn't know all that because the cameras (and my attention) were focused on the leaders after the crash happened, and when the yellow came out and I realized that Joey was going to win, I just kind of blanked out for a while. Ha ha.

The finish is what it is. NASCAR has to do what they feel is best in situations like that, and they have to look out for the drivers' safety first and foremost. I totally understand that. I just feel like that person you quoted is implying that some people are hypocrites that only care about safety when it won't affect the outcome of a race, and if that's what they're getting at, I don't think that's a fair assessment.

Pistone speaking condescendingly to fans who dare question NASCAR, doesn't surprise me.

This is what he always does. It's worse when fans dare question him. The guy isn't as great as he thinks he is.

ISC and Daytona International Speedway. They can spend $400 million on upgrading VIP suites but we have a driver in the hospital because they can't put SAFER barriers around the track.

Allow me to add NASCAR in that mix as they shared responsibility with the ISC and track......and every single freakin' person who praised them for coming clean WHEN THE ****** BARRIER SHOULD HAVE AND COULD HAVE BEEN INSTALLED YEARS AGO!!!!!!!!!!

This is probably the smartest thing I've seen today.

Its not all on Daytona though. Yes they should have had safer berriers there but nearly every other track is sitting naked when it comes to safer berriers on the inside walls of the tracks. The tricky places where there is a wall that no one thinks they'll hit but do.

They all have to do a better job.

dis / isc .........they had tire barrier available....didn't use them......til xf / ky bu accident.

Never thought about that but I bet you are right, they had them somewhere on the property.

So much wisdom from such a young man :booya:

A guy with a name like "pistone" shouldnt be questioning anything ................. let me guess, his first name is Pete

I didn't see anything really boneheaded but I was disappointed that NASCAR threw the yellow on the last lap when the wreck was well behind the leaders … I'd have liked to seen how things turned out between the 22, 4 and the 88 on the last half lap … it could have got interesting …

MRM (topic creator) for not naming the title "Bonehead of the Week: 2015 Commercial 500". ;)

NASCAR cites 'competitor safety' in throwing the final caution: NASCAR officials say they felt the backstretch crash Sunday on the final lap of the Daytona 500 had enough hard hits with the wall that they had to throw the caution as leader and eventual winner Joey Logano entered Turn 3. It resulted in a somewhat anticlimactic finish with the race ending on a judgment call under yellow-flag conditions without a scramble to the finish line. But it was a finish that NASCAR said was necessary for safety reasons. NASCAR rules dictate that once the leader has taken the white flag, it will not restart the race if the caution comes out. Drivers keep their position as long as they maintain a reasonable speed to the finish line. "We make every effort to finish a race under the green flag," NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said. "However, when cars get disrupted and hit the wall as they did on that last lap, we are going to react in the best interest of competitor safety."(ESPN.com)(2-23-

I honestly didn't see any hits that would be considered "hard". Or...am I just blind?
