We haven't done a bonehead in a few weeks, probably not many deserving people in some lackluster races. So here is one for this week.

My bonehead is for the #5 team for leaving the warming shield in the car that allowed the car to overheat in 5 laps and then blow up. What an expensive mistake.

You can look at that 2 ways. He only lost an engine. He may have lost the whole car if he had stayed in the race. ;)
 
The 5 team.
I don’t know what the piece of metal looks like or how often they use it, but it should have been spotted before the car got on the track.
 
Lots of nominees this week.

5 crew takes the cake, but also Hamlin for the reasons mentioned above, Dibenedetto for choking, Houff for being Houff, and a few others I'm forgetting at the moment, Also, did we ever get confirmation on what happened with Truex causing that last caution? Did he not go to pit road at all? If he deliberately stayed on the track after the tire failure, he should be penalized for bringing out the caution.
 
Truex for not pitting. Hamlin and Larson were dumb but we were taking shape of an amazing finish.

Before he wrecked I was glad he was fighting for his lap. It reminded me of the days when you had to work for your spot instead of getting a lucky dog participation trophy
 
So many nominees... My finalists are the 5 crew and Hamlin, and the tiebreaker for me goes to Hamlin because the 5 crew only took out 1 car. (Dis)honorable mention to Truex and Houff.

Yeah, but in those days the first car a lap down restarted on the front row. I don't miss that.
 
I'm going with Matty D. When you're the leader after taking the white flag you're job is to block both lines.

He second-guesses the bottom (blocks the top then moves to the bottom a tad, nope and goes back up) then lets Brad drive right by. If that were Lagano he would have stuck it in there in front of Kezo.

Come on Matt, if you're ever going to win a race, have to be way more aggressive than this nice guy crap.
 
Truex staying out was the right thing for him, but not for my viewing pleasure. So I selfishly nominate Truex.
 
MTJ at that point you weren't going to win the race so why did you want to change the outcome of it?

You make it sound like Matt should just know which lane is going to be the best every hundred yards. The best in the business have lost these types of races just like Matt did. It’s a chess game at 200 mph and sometimes the wrong move is made. Honestly, Matt probably made the right move until Tyler Reddick decided he was going to pass the entire lead pack all by himself and destroyed the top lane’s momentum.

Matt gained a much needed top 5 for the day. I don’t call that a bonehead worthy.

That's a good question. I'm assuming he thought it was his best chance to stay alive, since cautions often breed more cautions. If enough guys got caught up in wrecks, maybe he thought he could have got back in it? Or maybe he thought a caution would help his teammates? Who knows, but he absolutely manipulated the outcome of the race by staying on track and causing that caution. There's no excuse for limping around with a blown tire and avoiding pit road.

Costly mistake. Likely would’ve been found if they had practice and qualifying.
Can’t wait for things to get back to normal.

They should go further than that. Fine and loss of points. They have done it before when they could judge intent, so I don't understand why Truex is getting a pass
