I get that Charlie. I wasnt saying he’s right , he like Kyle Larson made a stupid joke and got cault. Im just saying minorities and lbgtqabc+ can mock white men and straight people all the time. They dont get sent to DEI class people just laugh. It never bothers me when that happens, I just laugh it off. BTW why do gay men talk like that anyway ?

- Dye has shown he doesn't always make smart decisions based his past

- Nascar needs to be really careful when it comes to officiating things that happen outside the track/competition

- we should really keep bonehead to at track things

Are they representing businesses when they do so, businesses that think the comments will offend customers? If not, there's no one to force them to a class. They're not making a company look bad, just themselves.

The pubic outcry is usually triggered by the businesses separating themselves from the speaker, not by the words themselves. If Dye wasn't a spokesman, he wouldn't have been suspended, his words would have received minimal attention, and we wouldn't be discussing a random voice in the Internet.

The media is full of opinions from straight White people about LGBTQ and other races, and they're are expressed without personal repercussions. But those guys either have small audiences, don't have a sponsor to answer to, or have sponsors that aren't concerned the comments will lose market share.
 
IMO nascar needs to just stay out of this stuff. It should all be handled by the team and their sponsors. If need be Nascar can issue a statement saying they don't condone said behavior.

I can think of 2 instances of this in the past.

- Home Depot fined smoke once for something I belive involving a member of the media

- Mars pulled their sponsorship off the #18 for something Kyle did (can't remember that one) and Interstate Batteries picked up that race.

Daniel Dye has been indefinitely suspended from NASCAR after insensitive comments made during a recent livestream, officials announced Tuesday evening.

Dye, driver of the No. 10 Kaulig Racing Ram in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, was penalized under Section 4.3.C in the NASCAR Rule Book, which states in part, “NASCAR Members shall not make … a public statement or communication that criticizes, ridicules, or otherwise disparages another person based upon that person’s race, color, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, age, or handicapping condition.”

The business side of things alone does allow Nascar to stay out of these things. Irregardless of what Nascar officials really or any one of them may internally think about Dye's behavior on a personal level.

Nascar is a corporate dependent sport. Most teams could not survive without them and by extension Nascar can't race without them.

So Nascar must create and nurture a corporate friendly culture. If Nascar were to remain neutral it would be interpreted as consent to Dye's behavior and a repellant to many sponsors.

Dye's behavior and comments were idiotic and had to be addressed. It is all 100 percent on him and the need to hold him accountable should be obviously simple and easy to understand. Nascar simply did their job.

I tink @wi_racefan means NASCAR should limit itself to only issuing statements and not taking any further action (suspension, penalty, fine, etc.)

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with his position in this post, only expressing my interpretation of his statements.
 
(Hopefully not a long post or too much of a tangent)

I totally get the idea that the corporate side of things has taken some personality out of the sport. Drivers have to conform to corporate expectations, and there are some written rules along with some unwritten ones.

Drivers are probably coached on what they can and cannot say on a routine basis.A lot of corporate money is riding on that young twentysomething, who could potentially wreck a teams sponsorship with just a few words.

In my unrealistic world of ideas, there would be less corporate control. In my heart of hearts, I don't even like multi-car teams. I would ban the teams from being able to communicate with any other competitor during the races (especially with any inter-team coordination).

But with all that said and like it or not, NASCAR has to have corporate support. In addition to this there will still always be a code of conduct. Yes to more freedom of expression and personality, but you still cannot or should not get away with being an (Daniel Dye type of) a-hole, regardless of the corporate influence.

And making it a point to offend a potential audience and sponsors is indeed an act of being an a-hole.
You also do not have to be an a-hole to have some personality.

Respectfully, no. @LibertyU24 has the same access* to express his opinions here as the rest of us. He's on topic and isn't violating the terms of agreement. I don't agree with what he says but I'll defend his access* to say it.

* Notice I said 'access', not 'rights'. No one has a right to free speech on a privately operated forum, only the right to start their own forum.

Question, if Dye had mocked SVG with an Australian accent would the consequences be different?
This is the type of thing that happens that I don't really understand and I am curious as to what's the difference.

It probably does belong there. I just think a handful of posters rule over everything down there and thoughtful responses are rare.
I am not trying to send this thread to the podium I am just an old codger (dare I say) trying to understand Dye's situation.

Sure, I get where you are coming from - marginalized groups do seem to be setting a double standard when mocking a majority group like white straight men. Sure, it can seem a bit hypocritical.

But at the end of the day its just a symptom of course correction and societal evolution. Is it right to mock the privileged? Not really. But at the end of the day, LGBTQABC+ is still a marginalized group in a society that is being asked to embrace important and necessary change/acceptance. Within the context of societal growth and acceptance, mocking marginalized groups is just more harmful, and when you represent a brand affiliated with America's greatest motorsport, there are understandable and deserved consequences for being insensitive.

At the end of the day, us straight white men don't know what it's like to not be privileged, and part of a marginalized community. While we shouldnt be mocked either, let's not pretend this is a total double standard, or that the criticism has the same emotional or psychological/cultural weight.

Its putting an open wound a foot above a flame vs putting some nice moist healthy skin above the same flame. The damage and pain is different.
