Bonehead Watkins Glen

McDowell
His crew might not have messed up the second time if not for the added pressure from his first penalty costing them a good chance to win.

Larson. I think he was the one who could’ve had something for Byron, but we’ll never know.

The whole 9 team. Chase for the self inflicted desperate postion they are in, and Alans senseless miscalculation today.
Very talented driver that will win more championships but it shouldnt happem this year. You just shouldnt be able to so flawed without being eliminated.

Today was just part of the colossal breakdown, they were not goung to catch or beat Willy B today even without any mistakes.

Definitely Larson. I think he had something for the 24 but pissed it away as always.

Several worthy candidates this week. The #9 crew chief, Larson, McDowell, and the #18 in the Xfinity race for doing more damage to his own car than the guy he tried to take out. Has to be AG, not that Chase was going to win. But that was stupid.

I know everyone wants to blame Alan but correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't every team have an engineer that provides the fuel mileage to the CC? He said "got the wrong info" to Chase so I'm assuming so.
You are correct. The engineers at the track and a squadron of them sitting at workstations at the shop all apparently missed this one.

Gustafson needs advisory people who can do elementary mathematics in their heads because he obviously can’t.

this is a hard one to understand, because most of the team have war rooms back at the shop working during the race just for this stuff.

Getting pretty old listening to the 9 blame game. The only crew chief around I know of who can figure out fuel mileage is Larry Mac because they had to know how to do it back in the day before "flip the switch" and "war rooms" were a thing.

Honestly, it's a tie between McDowell for entering too many boxes on his way to his pit stall and Alan Gustafson flubbing the fuel call. I don't know if Chase had the car to win at the Glen, but they were making moves and working their way up to the front. McDowell had the car to win at the Glen but that mistake on pit row ****** him.

I have to give it to McDowell. That's not a new rule is it? Seems it's been in place forever. Heck he blew through 5 pit stalls. I guess ultimately really didn't cost him anything with the electrical issue or whatever he had. But that's just crazy running for another win and BLOWS that procedure.

I would like to see the wording on that rule. I agree that McDowell ****** himself over but I also know how slight change in wording can make a rule completely different. Just like The Fae, NASCAR seems more interested in the wording of the rule, rather than the spirit.

For some reason I think you can travel through 3 stalls on way to yours? And that seems pretty tough when you think about it. I'd need a marker on the pit stall lines so I'd know where I could move left through open stalls. Pitting is definitely harder than we give them credit for, like so many other things.

Spotters help with that.

Here's my assumption, and I know what they say about assumptions. This rule was created as a safety measure and to keep things fair when cars are going in and out of their pit boxes and you have a flurry of activity on pit rows between all the teams servicing their cars. The rule protected OTW crew that are already servicing the cars that are in their box, and it prevented cars from crashing into each other as they try to get in and out of their boxes.

With that assumption in mind, you would think NASCAR would give a little leeway for a box that wasn't being used by anyone, but I guess not.

I think you are correct. But I think the reule carries over to empty stalls so it is black/white.
