BREAKING: Carl Edwards to JGR

I get what you guys are saying, but he chose to deep throat Ford's junk so much that it will make him look like a clown when he switches to a rival manufacturer. It just adds fuel to the fire that he's a total fake. Tries to act like Mr. Perfect, but there are so many rumors of him being a bipolar, narcissistic roid rage douchebag. Wouldn't be surprised if they were true.

What an awesome stable of drivers they would have at JGR . If they ever hit on a winning set up , look out . They just need a Rodney Childers or a Chad Knaus . Team wise , they've got to be very close to #1 , dropping Roush to what ? Sixth ?

Yeah, I'd like to see JGR worry more about finding someone who can help them with these setups instead of bringing in Edwards. What in hell is going to help with? I seriously doubt that they're getting low on ego.

At least he's not grumpy, like you ;)

Another bottom-of-the-barrel thought --- it doesn't matter what WE think/like/dislike about drivers/teams/manufacturers --- all of them are going to do what THEY think is the best move for THEM.

However, we do have some say in whether or not the move is a wise one ---- our dollars.

I guess the same could be said of Mark Martin....

So what if Carl changes from Ford to Toyota --- like anyone else, he'll follow the money.
You praise the sponsor that's paying the bills --- if someone else throws more at you, you jump ship. But, you also run
the risk of alienating loyal fans.

If you go to Carl Edwards' house, you think you'll see a Ford sitting in the lane way? Me neither...

These guys follow the money and say what the sponsors want. This will be a good move for him. The Roush boat is sinking fast, and he needs to get off while he still has some good years left.

99.9% of the drivers will drive their manufacturer's car 99% of the time. Many have very large car collections they like to take for spins. But to and from the grocery store, to and from work, and parked out front in the driveway you'll find whatever car they drive in cup. You can take that to the bank.

I really don't see what the big deal is. These guys are paid spokespeople. As are the millions of people you see in ads every time you watch a commercial, or open a magazine, or see a web banner. Actors, models, etc. Celebrity or small time actors. Doesn't matter. They provide a service to people who pay them. I have a fairly large restaurant chain as a client. I eat there as often as I can. If a larger restaurant chain comes and gives me more money, I'll eat there instead. Big deal.

A lot of people mention "loyalty"...are you kidding me? This is business. A real big boy business. Loyalty? Come on. And here's the thing, it goes both ways. Do you think Ford is "loyal" to Carl? They'd drop him in a second if Carl ever gave them reason to. How about NAPA? Were they "loyal" to Martin Truex? Surely they would have gone with him in SOME capacity to FRR, since Martin was very loyal to them, and was an innocent victim during the whole spingate thing...right? Small associate sponsorship? Patch on the suit? Personal service agreement? Something, right? Nope. Martin doesn't see a cent from NAPA. It goes both ways.

BS

They drive luxury cars and fly Lear jets. Don't tell me for one second that Carl went out and bought a Ford Fusion and drives it everyday. The only reason he may have one is because Ford GAVE him one for free. You won't see JJ or Gordon driving a Chevy SS to pick up their kids either. Same goes for the rest of them.

You're wrong. Watch the NASCAR Drivers 360 reality show from 2004, 2005. They all drive the brand of cars they drive on the track. Hell, there was that article about Jeff Gordon taking his kids to school a few months ago and it mentioned he drives a Suburban.

Gonna agree here to an extent....The Personal Services Contract each one of these guys has with his manufacturer probably dictates the vehicle he drives. In essence, he is paid to drive a free car. Now having said that, I know that Kyle takes his classic Chevy out on occasion, but most of the time, he is in his Lexus GS Hybrid. Those PSC's are pretty lucrative I would think. Just say the name of the manufacturer, driver the car of the manufacturer, a commercial every now and then, and you get paid. Extremely important to the manufacturer.

Yeah. Hasn't Kyle Busch gotten all of his speeding tickets in a Lexus?

Youre right. Jeff doesnt drive a chevy SS. He had his own brand of monte carlo named after him & drives a corvette.

Carl didn't go out and buy a Ford Fusion, Ford gave him a car. Every driver (well, at least most of the bigger names) receives a car from their manufacturer to drive. It's a perk. And they all drive them. It's part of the gig. If Jimmie ever ran into Alba Colon at an Olive Garden in Charlotte, and she watched him climb into a Lexus, the sh*t would hit the fan. Again...this is big time business, guys.

Also..I literally just spent Mon-Wed with Kurt at his house in Charlotte. He has two cars parked in the driveway - a black Chevy SS and a (new) red Chevy Corvette. He wouldn't even THINK about parking a different manufacturer in his driveway. He drives the SS given to him. He has a garage where he stores 20 plus other cars...and he'll definitely take them for a spin from time to time. But his grocery getter is an SS. You can call "BS" all you want, but I just spent several days riding around in it. Drivers will stay within their manufacturers brand as much as they possibly can.

Yup, but I believe that the LFA was a loner. Kyle Effect.
I would be more disappointed in Kyle if he drove a Lexus LFA and didn't get a speeding ticket. :D It was basically a street legal version of Toyota's LeMans car with leather seats and a car stereo.

Lots of respect for Alba Colon. Smart, smart, smart and classy as hell lady. Really like what she does. A credit to this sport.

Speaking of that... was there any trouble with Chevrolet re: Kurt driving a Honda at Indianapolis?

I hear ya, but I don't think that thing was modeled after anything. So unique, and a total departure from where Lexus had been at the time. Mr. Toyoda has changed much of the driving experience for Toyota/Lexus, and the only reason the LFA was reality was because of him.

No, but Chevy and Honda I'm sure talked, and agreed that both sides would win.

Well, maybe the LFA came first, but I'm 99% sure they later raced it in the GT class at LeMans and a few other European endurance races.

Trouble? No...because we stayed within the agreement reached between Kurt and Chevy regarding driving a Honda in Indy. But was putting that agreement in place "trouble"? Heck yeah...it took months. It was pretty much the only sticking point. And, if he never does the Double again, you can pretty much bet it was because of those sensitivities (no matter what you might hear them say on camera).

Yeah, I see what you are saying there....They ran the 24 Hours of Nurburgring with it several years ago, and privateers have been running it since. It didn't race at LeMans.

When Andretti switched to Honda I thought Kurt's chances at showing up at Indianapolis were dead. Glad something was worked out. Honda should hire you to kick Graham Rahal's butt. He races a Honda but on his Twitter feed all I see him talk about are his Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG and Porcshes. He needs the brand discipline that these NASCAR guys have.

Yeah, I thought that was interesting too. Big BMW guy too isn't he?

Would be interesting to see the contracts that Mr. Penske has in place running Chevys in IndyCar and Fords in NASCAR. Probably have a dividing line down the center of the parking lot at Team Penske.

Who does Carl piss off though? Ford is already pissed so they don't care. Chevy doesn't care. The only people who matter in Carl's authenticity regarding manufacturers is Toyota. Frankly, many of us loyal to the brand have parents who have Ford and Chevy histories, and in my case, they came to Toyota. My point being that Carl wouldn't be the first to move from a "domestic" manufacturer to Toyota. He will probably use the same kinds of lines many converts do.

The article states that "Rumors persist that Carl Edwards’ sponsor at Joe Gibbs Racing will be none other than the M&Ms/Mars brand."

As I'm sure most of the KuBu fans are aware, there's a lot more to Mars (the money behind the M&M's car) than just M&M's.

link to Mars' brands: http://www.mars.com/global/brands.aspx

If Edwards is in the "Mars car" next year maybe they'll slap a different, more healthy product on it.

Yeah, when Andretti made the switch, Kurt thought his chances were dead as well.

As for Graham, I have no idea what their agreements are, or how hard/soft the relationships are with their manufacturers. I imagine open wheel deals are a bit less sensitive since consumers can't really relate to the cars they see on track at all. At least not in the way NASCAR fans can kind of relate to a Chevy SS. There's a much closer tie between NASCAR Driver and their manufacturer (and manufacturer's product line). It's 100% of the reason they switched body types last season. And the reason drivers are more likely to keep up with appearance.

You are off base by a mile! Carl is a great guy and is the same off the camera as he is on.
How do I know this? Because I happen to have a very, very close family member that interacts with Carl and all the Roush guys all day, every day...even jack, so your opinion is absolute hogwash!

You know this how?

Is this even news or is it just more silly season stuff? Isn't this all just rumor at this point? The thread topic makes it sound like it's already been announced.
It's not a done deal, but I can tell you the intent is for Carl to drive for JGR. Unlike most of the other big names (Hendrick, RCR, SHR etc...) JGR does not have deep pockets. If there is not guaranteed funding for a 4th car for an entire season (and maybe even beyond), there will not be a 4th car. Even if they're only a dollar short. That would be the reason this didn't happen.

As usual , Allen , your insight is great to hear . Thanks .
