CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Brian Vickers will miss Sunday's Autism Speaks 400 at Dover International Speedway because of a medical condition diagnosed this week, Red Bull Racing team officials announced Thursday.

Casey Mears will take Vickers' place in the No. 83 Toyota this weekend.

Vickers, who qualified for the Chase last season, was hospitalized Wednesday evening for an undisclosed condition and was undergoing tests and further evaluation on Thursday.

"It is unfortunate that I will not be able to participate in the Dover race," Vickers said in a statement distributed by the team. "Casey is a good friend of mine, and I know he will do his best for the No. 83 team this weekend."

Vickers' absence will break a streak of 87 consecutive Cup starts, dating to 2007, his first year in the Red Bull car. Missing the race also will deal a serious blow to Vickers' chances of making the Chase this season.

Vickers is 20th in the standings through 11 races, 464 points behind series leader Kevin Harvick and 160 points behind 12th-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. The top 12 drivers after 26 races qualify for the Chase.

"Our main concern right now is with Brian and his health and recovery," said Red Bull Racing general manager Jay Frye. "All things are looking good at the moment. This is just a minor setback."

Vickers, who is well-known for an active lifestyle that includes extensive travel, skydiving, scuba diving and snowboarding, has two career Cup victories -- the most recent coming last August at Michigan -- and 11 poles, six of which he earned in 2009.

Mears has competed in two Cup races this season and has failed to qualify for six others. Last week he failed to make the field at Darlington in the No. 36 Tommy Baldwin Racing Chevrolet, which Johnny Sauter will drive at Dover.

*Edit - Whoops, my bad. I didn't see the thread Andy already posted.

Maybe he's a diabetic. Diabetics have to watch out about becoming dehydrated. Sometimes dehydration can slowing sneak upon you, then boom you pass out.
very true. my daughter was an undiagnosed diabetic for at least a year before she was diagnosed. she's on insulin now and the change is quite dramatic. diabetes (particularly type 2) is rising dramatically among adults today. whatever it is i wish brian the best.

This reminds me of the days of Tim Richmond. :(

That's what I meant when I said it seems bizzare. I am in no way implying anything. Whenever something is left as super-secret, there's something out of the ordinary going on.

Answered?

UPDATE: many Twitters reporters at Dover International Speedway report that Red Bull Racing's Jay Frye said that Vickers had discomfort in his chest during his visit to Washington, DC on Wednesday and Dr. Jerry Petty suggested he go to an emergency room. There are several blood clots in his veins which were found during a CT Scan. Vickers is on medication to dissolve the clots. Frye says there's no timetable for Vickers' return, but he's been given a clean bill of health and clots are being dissolved.

The medication most likely is TPA, I've had it. 4 grand a pop but it works. He is awful young to be having this type of problem.
Wish him well.

His diet from now on is going to sux, if it doesn't have feathers or fins it's been off my diet since 95,,but I cheat big time come BBQ season.:D

A man's gotta eat.

I'm not sure if anyone realizes this but there's already a thread on this subject.

You know I jnew there was when I posted this in the other area but the weird thing is it was not there when I looked so that is why I put it in the newest one. I see the Mods moved the newest and combined them, maybe they were doign that at the same time I was trying to post and I could not see the original???

Maybe some good news?

Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody is reporting that Brian Vickers could return to the seat of the #83 Red Bull Racing Toyota in time for this weekend's NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Sources close to the situation say that Vickers will undergo testing later this week to determine whether blood thinning drugs have dissolved the blood clots that formed in his legs and lung last week. If so, and if his doctors are satisfied with the level of blood-thinners in his system, Vickers could be cleared to compete on Saturday night. Casey Mears remains on standby in the event that Vickers is not cleared to compete, and a decision on his status could come as late as race day.

the thing with blood thinners is that you are suppose to be careful about injuring yourself for fear of bleeding to death from open wounds that would normally clot. why take the chance for a race that doesn't mean anything points wise?

I'm on thinners since my little stroke. I had some minor surgery last week to remove possible skin cancers, took forever to stop the flow.

He's got to be real careful.

Same with my grandpa. Every little bruise is a big risk.

Just read at NASCAR.com that the 83 team has asked to be allowed to put Mears in for this weekend.

I'm happy that discretion is being used in keeping Brian out of the car.

UPDATE 3: Red Bull Racing Team announced that the #83 Red Bull Toyota has requested a driver change and has been cleared by NASCAR to participate in the Sprint All-Star Race Saturday, May 22. Casey Mears will again pilot the #83, due to primary driver Brian Vickers' diagnosis of blood clots and on- going testing and treatment. "Given the extenuating circumstances we have dealt with this past week regarding Brian's health, we would like to thank NASCAR for their assistance and understanding of this unique situation by allowing us to compete in the All-Star Race," said Jay Frye, Red Bull Racing Team General Manager & Vice President.(Red Bull Racing)(5-19-2010)

Well I hope not but if he needs that much time he should take it. The most important thing is getting better, racing can wait......
yep, brian is a young man with plenty of life and racing ahead of him. i'm sure he doesn't want to sit out any longer than necessary but he should take all the time his doctors advise him to.

At his age, it is hard to see the big picture. I hope he is getting advice from people who can see it. These guys take a pretty serious beating in these cars on a weekly basis. I've seen guys who didn't even wreck be bruised all over their bodies after a race. Doing that on blood thinners seems pretty dangerous to me.

Just rest and recover and come back strong next year.

Anyone else slighty worried that RBRT might use this as an excuse to get out of his extension?

I was actually thinking that could be a possibility too. I mean, they want someone who can jump out of airplanes and all that, not someone who might be a health risk. Doesn't really fit their image.

drivers like all athletes are concerned about sitting out too long for fear of being replaced. it happens in all sports and is a legitimate concern.

what seems more pertinent to me is why did brian have the blood clots? that's not normal for a healthy 26 year old. he could easily have had a stroke or heart attack. some people have mini-strokes and are never aware they have had one until the doctor tells them they had it during a routine physical. my mother had one like that. heart disease? i'd bet money he's on a diet similar to sst's and will be on it for the rest of his life.

Agreed.

Question: Red Bull owns the team and sponsors the car. Why don't they just sit out the 83? It'd save them a good 15M or more vs having Brian and Casey.
