BREAKING NEWS: Brian Vickers hospitalized, Mears to replace him at Dover

Agreed.

Question: Red Bull owns the team and sponsors the car. Why don't they just sit out the 83? It'd save them a good 15M or more vs having Brian and Casey.

After the race Mears gave them this week I bet they wish they would have sit it out.

I thought this was an ALL STAR race Not an ALL STAR CAR race..why the heck was mears even in it?????

Eligibility rules for Sprint Cup All-Star Race:
1st criteria: Drivers who have won races in the current and preceding year. If a driver leaves a team with which he has won a race, he remains eligible (through the last race before The All-Star Race), the team does NOT
2nd criteria: Drivers who are past Sprint Cup champions in the last 10 years
3rd criteria: Drivers who have won The All-Star Race in the past 10 years
4th criteria: The winning driver of the Sprint Showdown
5th criteria: Driver who finishes 2nd in the Sprint Showdown
6th criteria: Driver voted in by the fans

exactly. i never got the logic (was any presented?) that mears qualified

I think they asked NASCAR to allow them to change the driver in the race without changing their eligibility. It was such a last minute deal with Brian....
I think I read someone that NASCAR approved their driver change.

Mears should of had to race his way in like Biffle and Truex did instead of given a free pass in.Plus a "last minute deal" to me is when something happens to your driver a day or two before the race not 2 weeks before like in this case.

I agree

There has to be someone better than Mears they could put in that car. I mean heck call up Ward Burton if you can't find anyone else because he can't do any worse.

exactly. Theres a bunch of other drivers that are similar to Mark Martin- Old, but still wanting to race.

I would give the #83 to Trevor Bayne for the last 24 races. He would be right at the cutoff for ROY as well(I believe...and probably win it). Red Bull has worked with MWR in the past as well.

Yes they did ask and yes it was basically a last minute decision. The decision for Mears to run in the All-Star race was made 3 days before the race. I'm not even sure why this is a big deal. The series director has the discretion on whether a substitute driver is allowed.

Okay, there is a silver lining in all this for you fans of this silly exhibition race. Next year Michael Waltrip can pull one of his drivers and put himself in the race. Cool eh?

There are RULES to whom can run in the all star race...MEARS does not qualify..END OF STORY

Oh God!! Lets hope not. The other drivers are not safe when he is on the track.

While I agree that they probably should have let the car sit out, I don't see why this can't be acceptred by some of you, especially given the circumstances of why Vickers wasn't in the race.

Yeah, I could see making a big deal of this if, say MW pulled one of his drivers out to put himself in the race, but Brian being out of the race was beyond anyone's control.

Agreed. I seriously doubt NASCAR would OK Michael just pulling a driver. The 83 problem was sudden, and beyond anyone's control.

It is too late. Nascar has changed the rules . Rightly or wrongly . It is now the car that qualifies for the race regardless of who the driver is.If Michael or even Richard Childress wants to insert himself into the race , how can Nascar say no? That's what happens when you change the rules for one guy. Heck, RC could even put Austin in the race next year.

It's like last year when Ken Shcrader was in the race. What has he done in the last 15 years that he deserves to be in the race?

I think they should make it where you have to have won a race in the last 5 years. Simple and to the point, no question about who's in the race and who isn't.

Ted, I don't know how long you have been watching NASCAR races, but it's obvious that you don't know the power of Daytona. NASCAR can do what they want, when they want, and to whom they want. It's their show and the rule book is written in pencil. I mean it took a big law suit for them to name drugs that are not allowable. The low down, if NASCAR doesn't want you in a NASCAR sanction track, I don't care who you know, you can't get it. If they want you to race, they will make a place for you.

Then it would be pretty much a 2 driver show.

If they used the 5 year rule these drivers would be in the 2011 All-Star(and anyone not on the list that wins next year before that hadn't yet). I'm sure I missed someone but it's just a rough list....

Jimmy Johnson
Kurt Busch
Kasey Kahne
tony Stewart
Kevin Harvick
Dale JR
Greg Biffle
Matt Kenseth
Denny Hamlin
Jeff Gordon
Kyle Busch
Jeff Burton
Brian Vickers
Casey Mears
Martin Truex Jr
Carl Edwards
Juan Pablo Montoya
Jamie Mac
Clint Bowyer
Ryan Newman
Brad Keselowski
Mark Martin
David Reutimann
Joey Logano

I don't think that there's much wrong with the current format & rules. I hope that they keep things the same for a while rather than changing it each year.

As far as Mears being substituted for Vickers..... Yawn. I think that was done more for the team than anything else. Something similar may have happened in the past although I can't find anything on it searching the net. I haven't heard or read about any other driver, team, owner, media personality, etc..... that had any sort of issue with it. Only a few fans. Like someone in one of the preceding posts said..... It's NASCAR's sandbox and if you want to play in it, you'll live by their rules.
