NASCAR chairman Brian France addressed the media for the first time since last season's final race Sunday at Richmond, where he touched on a number of topics ranging from Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s retirement to the future of NASCAR.

France, accompanied by his 6-year-old son Luke at the podium in a surprise visit to the media center, noted the cyclical nature of the sport and a recent changing of the guard following the exits of stars Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Carl Edwards, and Junior at season's end.

“They can’t be humble when they race out there with veteran stars that they’ve looked up to," France said. "They can’t be humble to say they are ‘happy to be here.’ They are here for a reason — they are very, very good. And they stay for a reason, meaning you have to compete at a high level."

Perhaps other drivers besides Kyle Larson will take after France's suggestions. Larson earlier this week said the was the "last true racer left" in NASCAR's Cup Series.

“It’s really not uncommon to see three, four or five of your top drivers deciding to exit around the same time,” France told reporters. “The good news is the talent pool that is coming is deep. We’re excited about that.

“I’ve said this a long time ago: careers are not going to last as long as they did in previous decades of NASCAR. The demands are high, the opportunity to leave a race car and do something else because of the financial situation they are fortunate enough to be in allows them to pick and choose their careers a little bit differently.”

As NASCAR hopes to market to younger fans, France said one thing he tells the young drivers is that they shouldn’t feel they need to be modest. Rather, he wants to see "their personalities come out; their competitive zeal come out."

Good. Let the drivers do what they wanna do and say what they wanna say. I really enjoy rooting against guys like Kyle Busch, Kez, Logano, etc. But racing is sooooo much better with them around. Love em or hate em, they are great drivers with interesting personalities that make the sport better.

Scripted interviews coming next? Geeze let them be who they are.

Very hypocritical of him.

You cant say hey speak your mind, young fellas then penalized them when they do because they dared critique the car or whatever the case may be.

Cant have it both ways, dude.

May be a few sponsors that have other ideas.

How about , letting them be their selves?

Next time a driver calls Nascar for some of the bullsheit, he is still going to slap them with a shut up fine.
Brian just wants a cast of programed Stepford wives that are always compliant. Yet complex enough to look like something different, something more than submissive trained tools to serve his quartly profit reports.

It blows me away that people are struggling to understand why the sport is tanking.

People choose their struggles to understand. Nascar front office is number 167,789,236
on my list to worry about.

Oh NO! Brian has had children.......I am not stoked.

Brian doesn't understand that if the racing is good all this other ancillary BS is not necessary. Actually it is not necessary even if the racing is bad.

I realize that I'm a buzzkill here for the sport. I've followed NASCAR since I was probably 10 years old.
People here and my friends locally absorb every BS change to the sport since Brian began screwing everything up. Every year with every goofy change fans band together and say, "Well it really isn't that bad. At least they're still racing." Yeah, it really is that bad. I recognize that the fan demographic is changing.
A drunken fool in charge that is throwing darts at a map is a futile endeavor.
It's extremely difficult not to watch this year. I shelled out over $1,000 for tix and didn't see a lap.
I'm as hardcore a fan as anyone on this board but I'm not going to be complacent with the direction this idiot is moving the sport.
I'll continue to boycott and you guys will continue to bitch about my passion.
I want nothing more than to see this sport flourish but I can't ignore that a moron is at the helm.
Thanks for putting up with me.

Kyle Busch Retreat for 1 week for all Rookies.

Learn to ram others during a caution in a rage, destroy a guitar, bow to the crowd, beg for a beating from opposing team (and get it), learn how not to give an interview, roll around in free candy from your sponsor while your hot wife is posting her pics online, drive fast on the street and get your driver's license suspended, and sell T-shirts that reference your bad attitude...

You left out, win seven Cup races several months after breaking major bones in your body and clinch the Championship.

All we need is for Dale Jr to drop a legdrop on say....Chase Elliot

Then the NWO is formed with Dale Jr, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano

Just when you think there is no possible way that Brian F could not get to a new level of stupid, he goes and does it.

As Dale Jr is being interviewed by Michael Waltrip, yells "You fans can stick it, brother!" as the crowd begins to pelt them with garbage.

Next week they invade victory lane and knock out Jimmie Johnson, steal his gold trophy then spray paint his back
