Brickyard 400: 2nd biggest race of the year?

I'm guessing you've never been to a race at Indy. The access to the pits and garages is as good as any track in NASCAR without needing a special pass; the food, drink, souvenirs, and amenities are second to none; and with the many years of experience, getting traffic in and out is painless. Sure it's a big track and there are only a few seats where most of the track can be seen, but there are lots of jumbotrons so there's no excuse to miss anything.

Forty-three cup cars running full-throttle down the front stretch in that canyon of racefans on the first few laps is the loudest body rattling rumble I've ever experienced.
No I never have been to Indy, when DALE was racing I want to 8 to 10 races a year. I know all about when they start 43 engines and throw the green flag.

The front stretch at Indy is basically a narrow canyon, the sound echoes like at Bristol. Ear splitting!

I was at the second Brickyard 400 in '95. DALE won it after waiting all day in the rain, it stopped just in time to get the track dry and start the race with enough daylight to finish. The cars started in the garage area and went straight out onto the track down at turn 1, did a couple of warmup laps, and dropped the green flag. We stayed in our seats under the suites on the front stretch emptying our coolers all day and still nearly missed the start. Many fans had left the track and were an hour or more away when they heard the race start on the radio; there were still people rushing back into the track with 20 laps left. People complained for weeks about NASCAR not calling it until Sunday!

Just another race too me
Well said and I totally agree. I look forward to many other tracks far more than this one. I could have easily made the two hour drive from Eldora yesterday to Indy for the Brickyard race. I'm sure there are plenty of tickets available. I just can't muster up the desire to watch a race there. Had the Nationwide Series still been racing @ IRP I'd been more likely to go.

This year will be my 11th Brickyard 400, and being from Indiana it means a lot to me personally. I love the track, the history, NASCAR etc. I know some people don't like the race because its single file, you cant see everything, its boring blah blah blah. Its NASCAR at Indy and it still has that allure and prestige, I dont need it to be called the 2nd best race or anything for that matter, I love it and if you want to talk about it being a crappy race track we might as well call Pocono one too.

Welcome to the forum TW . You make some great points . Flat track racing really tests the driving skills . Cars get strung out because the better drivers get through the corners faster . It's part of racing . Funny thing is , folks on here will complain about Daytona NOT being strung out enough . Go figure !

Tango: glad to see you enjoy it. I too have favorite racetracks that I can't explain to others why they are special to me. most of the time it has to do with the people I went with. my wife, my dad, my friends, etc... several of those were at Michigan that most people don't like. I understand your feelings. and can appreciate your sentiments.

welcome to the board.

When the Brickyard 400 was first run back in 1994, it was widely believed that it was instantly the 2nd biggest race on the schedule behind the Daytona 500, some in the media back then even suggested that it had trumped the 500 as NASCAR's biggest race.

But in 2013, do you still feel that way? After a couple decades of less than thrilling races year in and year out, is the Brickyard still that big a deal? I'm sure winning at Indy would be a thrill for any driver, but I'd be willing to bet that winning a Southern 500 or Coke 600 would mean almost or just as much, if not more.

Just wondering what everyone's opinion is.
Simple...NO

yep

Even qualifying creates a huge buzz. Just look today, everyone went nuts when Newman got the pole.

In no other tracks, that I can remember do people give standing ovations for a pole.

Wether some of you dont like the track or not, this is at least in the top 3 biggest race. IMO it is the second biggest.

You don't suppose it has something to do with #48 NOT starting P1?
