Just heard on Sirius that a spokesman for the brickyard was talking about putting lights around the track for future Brickyard 400s to be ran under. Thoughts?

Mine: start tomorrow.

I think any solution that would see it the Brickyard a thing of the pass will work for me. I like the road course idea. Iowa. My suggestion would be a trip across the boarder to Circuit Villenue though. I love that track.

I didn't watch the race yesterday and not once did I wonder what was going on. The brickyard is a great track for indy not Nascar. Maybe it's time to move on to something better. Perhaps Iowa or another road course.

I'd guess that as long as there's money to be made, we'll keep on racing there. A quick look back at the attendance @ this track over the past ten years looks a little like this.

2003 - 300,000
2004 - 250,000
2005 - 280,000
2006 - 280,000
2007 - 270,000
2008 - 240,000
2009 - 180,000
2010 - 140,000
2011 - 138,000
2012 - 125,000

I'm detecting some sort of trend here. Still @ 125,000, that's one heck of a crowd. You can't fit that many in a lot of tracks. It sure doesn't translate well to the television viewer though for future ticket sales. Even so the television ratings are pretty much in line with the rest from this year. Who knows, maybe if they throw the lights up it'll make a difference in attendance? That's a big gamble though.

Here's a link to some figures for this race.....

Brickyard 400 profitable despite falling crowds, experts say

Add the cost of electric for the lights and no way is that race still profitable at those attendance numbers. Not that I believe it is profitable now or believe there was 125,000 there this past week end.

Moving race back to Saturday could probably gain 50-75,000 people back. Moving to night could probably gain another 50,000. So i think it could be a good idea.

There was 125,000 people there? Is that number inflated because I didn't see one section of the stands that looked full. I think I seen bigger crowds at the speedway for pole day for the Indy 500 than the race on Sunday.

You'll have to judge that for yourself. I'd guess that if you'd stick 125,000 people in a venue that hold 300,000 +, it may look less than full.

Indianapolis TV Ratings: On the opening weekend of the Olympics, ESPN’s live telecast of the Brickyard 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 29, earned a 3.8 household coverage rating (3.3 U.S. rating), averaging 5,054,089 viewers, according to the Nielsen Company. Last year’s Brickyard 400 telecast, which did not air against Olympic competition, earned a 4.6 household coverage rating and tied with the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway as ESPN’s highest-rated NASCAR Sprint Cup telecast of the year (ESPN).(7-31-2012)

Well I didn't want to say that.Cause his head would get bigger.

Got to give credit where it's due ;)

The Daytona 500 had 8 million more viewers than the Indy race, that is, if you're talking about the Brickyard 400 vs. the Daytona 500.

I misread Mike's post. It said ESPN's highest rated broadcast from last year and I first thought it meant the whole season

Not a problem. It made me go back and look at the numbers. The Indy 500 did draw in more viewers than the Brickyard 400. I've since closed the tabs and don't feel like looking again but it certainly shows where the Indy tradition is and it ain't with NASCAR.

Just to be clear, I was talking about the Brickyard 400 and not Indy 500. I think we've got it figured out now and, FTR, I really do not care for tabbed browsing as I turn that off even before setting a homepage.

I didn't think there were people that DIDN'T use tabbed broswing. Makes no sense not to. Even old people use tabbed browsing. But then again some people still use hotmail and aol so...yeah....

Really? Of all the people using computers, you thought they all used tabbed browsing? That I find as peculiar as you apparently find not using tabbed browsing. What a wacky world we live in.

My wife does NOT use tabbed browsing. Neither do her parents, and they are old.

Hey some people still don't have HD so I guess I shouldn't be at all surprised that some would eschew the convenience and efficiency of tabbed browsing.

There was probably a lot more people there than it looked on Tv because all of the upper and shady seats were filled and a lot in the hot sun.
