Cup RACE thread --- Dover, #1

Oh, and on another good note, Jimmie Johnson is above the cutoff line with another top ten! Bodes well for tomorrow!
Was as fast as anyone during the end of stage 1 and looked to have a winning piece. The 18 second pit stop killed track position and they went the wrong way with pit stops. Finished the race better than he was, but still not as competitive as that first run. Definitely wouldn't rule him out of a win tomorrow. Just watching from the incar view (that was on NASCAR), he still gets around this place better than anyone else.

Though without a win, a top 5 should cut it, especially since the 24 will likely struggle tomorrow as well.

I had a thought that Chad is probably using Jimmie's set ups for Byron. I don't think Byron has been around long enough to know what he wants out of the car and Byron only has a simulator to go by for setups. They are usually way off since Covid. It will be interesting to see after the first race if they get the car better.

And Hamlin ran him down and passed him anyway and Hamlin ran him up to the fence doing it and Truex couldn't pass Almirola?

MTJ is the leader with a much faster car than Aric. Pass the slower lap traffic, it’s your job. Denny managed it better and blew MTJ’s doors off. One of these days he’s gonna bitch about the wrong driver and wake up with less teeth.

There's a clip of them from today. It sounded pretty nasty. Hard to make out, but I think Chad said something sarcastic and Willy said something along the lines of not know what to do. Chad was like "you either tell me what you need, or I can let you run like ****". William then was like "I can't drive in, I can only drive the car as it goes". Total contrast to Jimmies detailed report. "I can't drive in" isn't a report on how the car is handling. William sounded STRESSED too. I think Cliff Daniels would work well with him. Chad expects a lot out of his driver and William just isn't the personality for him. Byron's confidence is shot right now, imo.

yeah we have a certain two time cup champ saying how much no practice is hurting his performance, compare that to a new driver with a new crew chief that has a know it all attitude. Chad should be able to see what the car is doing IMO the good ones can and at least get Byron in the ball park.

I like MTJ but if you ever listen to him near the end of the race he's the biggest complainer about people getting out of his way. It's a race pass them no is expected to let anyone past as everyone is racing for something. Honestly I saw nothing wrong with what the 10 was doing. He was just running the line the 19 wanted, while leaving the top wide open and apparently the 19 thought he should just give him the bottom?

I honestly hope so. I'd like Truex to go to one spot better but best believe it won't upset me one bit if Jimmie nabs the long awaited eighty-fourth win. Something that has bugged me about the Hendrick brigade though is the very thing you mentioned - speed is present in the early stages of the race, but they can't seem to hang with the usual suspects come the race's conclusion. Sure would be beautiful scenes if that trend subsides tomorrow!

Willy B is all over the place. I vouch the for the dude, but you hate to see how one race he shows some glimmers of hope and pace, then he's nowhere to be found the next race.

`perhaps Byron and chase should swap crew chiefs. It would undoubtedly be entertaining to see the performance (especially Chase), and also Cha is the #1 crew chief for Hendrick (and arguably in nascar history). Wouldn't it make sense for him to be paired with the organization's #1 driver if he isn't with Jimmie?

This would also show whether he is a fit with Byron, which I believe he is not.

I don't know if Chad would work with Chase either. I don't think anyone will lol he's a grump now

I never thought I’d say this 2 or 3 years ago, but Chase and Alan are clicking. Their personalities seem to mesh. No way would I make that switch. Maybe, just maybe, the answer is that William is not Cup material and frankly the game has passed Chad by. This package and the optical scanner inspection process habe negated Chad’s expertise. Plus, he’s a colossal a-hole and there’s only a small handful of drivers who could work with him. For pure entertainment value, I’d like to listen to a scanner if he were on KyBu’s or Harvick’s box.

He’s apparently always been a grump. Jimmie was the one driver with the gravitas to tell him to stfu.

I don’t read much into it. It’s a few second audio clip in the middle of a race where the car isn’t handling and both driver and crew chief are under pressure. I think their overall relationship is fine. Heat of the moment type stuff, it happened with Jimmie and Chad all the time.

Chase and Alan have clicked from day 1. I didn’t expect Chase to be competitive for 2-3 seasons in and they were clicking off great runs during Chase’s rookie season together. Chase and Alan are top dog at HMS and have been for years.

Knaus has the most trophy’s as a crew chief in that garage but his better days are behind him. Clearly there are a dozen+ engineers that understand these cars more than he does.

Yeah, they also had a friendship, and Jimmie had success to back it up. Perfect storm.

Cliff Daniels should get a shot with Byron. If that doesn't work out, time to move on from Willy, IMO
