Cup RACE thread --- Las Vegas

Congrats to Hamcrap for his win. I genuinely feel for he and his family over their tragic loss. I know this win genuinely meant a lot to him. I still don’t like the guy, but am hopeful he is finding a path away from his narcissistic, self centered persona. Tragic life events can change people. They can produce reflection and resetting of direction. We shall see…

Petty isnt in my top 3.

I dont think Petty would do anything today. I also don't think Dale Sr would dominate today either and wouldnt do any better than any of the other top guys in top equipment do today. But that may be a sticky subject....
Petty definitely wouldn't have gotten 7 championships and 200 wins today. In his day, he was one of like, five full time drivers, racing against farmers and people who scraped together a car from the junk yard.

Earnhardt wouldn't have been as dominant today as he was, but he probably would've still been a superstar and get a championship or two.

You’ll understand if I don’t believe your BS

Who’s gonna take over the head ass when Denny retires ?

From where I'm sitting (pun intended)
My money is on Ty Gibbs in the Toyota branded booster seat

Plenty of secondary options for those that partake, Logano Blockgano, The Hurricane Hack Hocevar (my personal favorite), and the ever fun Ross blame game (he did it! and he ain't even near ya).

I agree with this. He also wouldnt be intimidating anyone either.

Dale was the first guy to see and understand air. Today, that knowledge is common.
Petty had county fair wins attributed to cup level stats. That part is bullshiit, in terms of credibility.
Petty was a great driver, tough as steel, knew how to wheel a car in every way possible. Yes the small track wins within a world of limited sponsored competition make his win total untouchable, but don’t let that diminish his abilities. None of us know how any of the previous generation’s drivers would handle this race car. Massively different. But feel, reaction time, vision, decisiveness, all elements of racing that great drivers have, and would apply in any era.

Good points.. Ty Gibbs had the title in Nationwide a few years back. Hocevar is too goofy to hate. Bubba could make the list, but people will say its because he’s black not just a ass.

Petty was never in his prime in this era of driver or car technology.
I agree that Petty had a decided advantage over everyone due to factory backed cars that no one else had in the beginning but if he came up in this era I believe he could have won a few,he wasn't a hack by any means.

I’m not suggesting Petty was a hack. He was the best of his era. He’d get destroyed today, in this car, with these drivers.
This Cup car is a piece of shiit. It doesn’t like to be driven loose. The old school drivers like loose.
This Cup car isn’t a “stock car.”

Richard Petty won races sanctioned by NASCAR’s Grand National division. That’s all that matters. He won races against Pearson, Allison, Yarborough, Jarrett, Waltrip, and others who were among some of the best to strap on a helmet. Petty would be something special in any era.

Dismissing Petty’s wins tracks with thinking that Fontana, CA housed the pinnacle of stock car racing. Pure recency bias.

They weren't stock cars in the 70's or 80's. They were built cars.

It’s wild to me that folks think previous greats wouldn’t adjust their skill set to be great today. The skills you mentioned, quite simply translate to any era. It’s the same with the MJ vs LeBron debate….newer fans say MJ was successful because he played plumbers and electricians while he couldn’t shoot threes. Well you place prime MJ in 2025, he’d adjust to dominate. Same with Petty and Earnhardt, they’d find different ways to dominate today because they were so damn good. Recency bias is blinding, greatness transcends eras.

Most drivers today wouldnt get in a car made in the early days. It tooks skill and lots off balls back then.

How did we even land on Petty? Because of Hamlin's cup win total?

We'll simply never know the exact measure of success, entirely different time periods entirely different everything.

Regardless, Petty is an all-time great and will always be.

I did a massive poll in 2011 to allow the RF members at the time to make the case for who they rated or considered to be the GOAT among Nascar drivers.

It is subjective thing that no one can prove and at it's best just some great discussion points and a way to appreciate all the great drivers.

In that set of head to head polls David Pearson edged out Dale Earnhardt as the GOAT. Petty was third, Jimmie Johnson was fourth etc.

If folks will stick around I will do a similar contest during the next off season to run during the months of December 2026 and January 2027.

Be ready to make your arguments etc...

Petty's greatness is undeniable. Its not a crime to declare he wouldnt be the guy today.
