Cup RACE thread --- Phoenix

Pistone doesn't miss the point to me. Last week the F-1 winner won by 22 seconds and today's Indycar race winner won by 8 seconds. Those aren't the kind of races that I want to watch, but Nascar's idea of short track racng and short track racing in general produce those kinds of races and now they added N. Wilksboro. I don't want to hear it when more short track flops continue to happen. These guys don't wreck and run and goon it up for the most part.

Actually did enjoy today’s race, had a little bit of everything. I think there comes a point where you just can’t make everyone happy and then just accept it. People like what they like and when they don’t like it, they’re always going to be loud. At this point, it can’t be the track’s fault. I sincerely hope they (meaning nascar) figure out the short track package and soon, before the angry mob wants those gone.

Phoenix isn't a short track imo, I think Nascar just wants it promoted as one to add it the list. I liked the old configuration better.

But, I dont think the race was a disaster. Sometimes a car will just dominate the rest of the field and I wish people could accept it when it happens. I sure don't want a bunch a gimmicks to simulate or stage something that just isn't there.

I am sure developing a rules package is a hellacious and often impossible task. But I think a lot of things would be fixed with cars that have to much HP and lots of tire degradation to create the comers and goers and the closing speeds. That would allow for all the passing and drama needed on most days.

But once that's been achieved just let them race. There will be days when someone dominates. And there will be glorious days when there are lots of great battles and storylines throughout the field.

I at least respect Nascar for letting them finish this one without a cheap caution.

You know me, I'm one of the last to care even if someone wins by a lap but what I'm saying is the intended expectations for this "package" didn't produce. The intended effect was to be able to pass ,have more lateral grip so they could turn under someone. The only thing that worked was they got tire fall off, plenty of it and very few hit on the setup which was well deserved by them but again it didn't reach the intended result they tested for. On to Bristol baby!

Somed interesting takeaways. First how were the 8 and the 22 and the 5 so bad? I have been down as a fan of Chase about his lack of speed but it goes to show this is a TEAM sport and you have you have to have all phases clicking. Perfect example, the CC's of the 9, 24 and 48 made one of the worst pit calls I have seen in some time and turned top 10 or better runs into top 20. Larson had the worst HMS car by far and salvaged a 13th place finish because his crew chief did not make that call.

The other thing....Why are the Toyotas so much better. Chevy is lagging behind both right now and it's concerning that they do not seem interested in competing right now.

Larson didn’t have the worst car at Hendrick. He had multiple pit road issues and restarted 20+ many times. Chevy also had 3 wins to start the year. The Toyotas are probably ahead of Chevy and Ford at the short tracks right now, yes.

They spent a mint on getting to get these cars to pass, they failed. Just because a Toyota won doesnt change that
Doesn't have anything to do with Toyota....while I love the win, I saw Bell pass a ton of cars all day....because he was better.....which is the point. Also note that I loved Vegas.....
You are agreeing with a radio head who wouldn't know a track bar from a lugnut over the guys who drive the cars? Got it
Pistone is an idiot, but his take on the fandom is spot on. It will never end.

Some fans would hate a 1-0 baseball game because there wasn't enough scoring.

I don't know about overgeneralization, but if you think that the Camry XSE wasn't developed with Phoenix in mind, I can't help you. The championship is won there.

The Toyotas are better at Phoenix because that track has been a point of focus IMO with the new Camry. WE have been mediocre at best in the Next Gen era. My take is that WE developed the car focused on Phoenix and are willing to take whatever trade off necessary with the rest of the tracks to make US fast there. Job well done. Nailed it. I am proud.

Chevy won 3 of 4 races so far and they are lagging behind? Come on!

I am not a drinker but everytime I see Chase Elliott I am thinking that's a Pabst Blue Ribbon hood.
I finally googled it this morning just to confirm it wasn't actually a PBR decal. I wasn't sure if they weren't just using a different color for some odd marketing reason.

Could be a win for Kelley Blue Book too if there are enough curious minds. It created enough for me to do a confirmation.

The angry mob doesn't know what they want. NASCAR needs to stop listening to them. The race was as great as they all are. Each one has a story.

2 of those were "plate" tracks where performance is not truly shown and the other was Larson at Vegas and he just owns that place right now so yes - winning is not everything. I am concerned that Ford and Toyota have been able to create a new body with 2 years worth of data for what this new car needs and Chevy (for some reason) is not creating one. On these flat tracks where the drivers have little options in the way of different grooves the Toyotas and Fords look way better. I think Bristol will be fine but when we go to these flat tracks like Phoenix, Pocono, Martinsville Richmond, Loudon and road courses and so on the Chevys can't compete. Where is the championship race again?

Instead of marveling over a dominant win by Bell, the narrative is the ****** package. **** that. I am marveling.

Considering that he was the only one able to pass all day....yes. Looked at 1-20 on the pylon and came back 20 minutes later and maybe two cars had switched spots.

I wonder if nascar said a team can break one rule next week what it would be. Horse power, brakes, suspension?

I’m a Byron fan, but the fact is that HMS sucked yesterday. Cars were able to pass, HMS wasn’t. Not because passing wasn’t possible, but because HMS wasn’t good enough. No idea why people have the idea that passing should always be easy.

Once Hamlin spun, he wasn't able to pass either. 95% of the field wasn't able to pass anyone. Like I said, the pylon barely changed over the course of the run. Even cars near the front struggled with this.

You cant win Phoenix if you don't get to Phoenix. What you posted simply didn't happen. Toyota is focused on winning everywhere.

100%....but you have to be good here, or the rest is pointless. Look at the raw speed on super speedways. WE choose downforce. WE have to be good on the 1.5s for obvious reasons. The design parameters put these OEMs in a box. I believe that WE made sure that whatever WE put into the car favored Phoenix. WE had not been great there in the Next Gen era....fixed....for now. Maybe it isn't even a design issue, but a set up focus. Who knows? The point is that Phoenix has been a priority for US.
