Cup RACE thread --- Phoenix

And Denny wouldn't have had a shot at winning without them. If hate the playoffs why bitch when a guy who wouldn't have a shot without them doesn't win it?

The guy who would've won the championship wasn't even in the final four. The guy you say would've won it lost it because of a blown tire. This format is a joke.

The overtime stuff is a joke too. I've been bitching about it all year. Longer, in fact.

It's called the Daytona 500, not the Daytona 520.

Adding this. With a regular standing Byron loses it on the blown tire and Larson is your champion

I just realized, the broadcast barely even mentioned Blaney afterward (the winner of the race, ya know, the thing we're watching) and sure as hell didn't even interview him. My god.
Won it three wide in a probably the closest finish of the season.

Crickets. Like it never happened.

This sport is lost.

IF WE USE THE WINSTON CUP POINTS!!

With how points are scored NOW Larson came in 11 points behind. ELEVEN POINTS BEHIND. Larson probably wins with the current points scoring format. He finished 3rd. Byron 33rd. With stage points also, Larson definitely made up 11 points.

Disagree. Larson had a hell of a season with 3 wins and 14 Top 5’s
Hasn’t stood out in any shape or fashion in 3 months. Didn’t win a single playoff race. Didn’t lead a lap today.

Maybe he wins the old Winston Cup points. I’m not sure. But he had no business winning under today’s context.

With how points were scored in the Winston Cup era he doesn't win.

With how they are scored now, I believe so. He came in 11 behind Byron under the scoring format used currently.

He was down by 11 coming into the race. With the blown tire Larson would have won on points. People can’t be upset about this, the points leader won the title

As much as I’ve ranted last night and today about the format, this is exactly why the championship has never been much of an interest to me. I was born during the end of the Winston Cup days so my entire fandom within memory has been during the Chase/Playoff era. Larson is one of my favorite drivers and I can’t say I particularly care that he won it.
At the end of the day I just enjoy the individual races and am sad to see another season end. Ready for the Clash on February 1st.

Imagine explaining to the casuals that this system is designed to capture, “our champion is a guy who didn’t lead a lap all day and didn’t win this race”.
What do we want? If this season had a full season points format, Larson wins the championship? Is that not what we want?

Yall confuse the hell out of me here.

Congratulations to the the 48 team, HMS, and of course Chevy for winning the 2025 NASCAR Championship. I do feel bad for Hamlin because he drove his butt off but they made a bad decision putting on 4 tires with only 2 laps left. That being said, I love the the playoffs and overtime. I hope it never goes away. I was on the edge of my seat from the drop of the green flag until the checkered flag was waved. Also congratulations to Blaney for the race win. Now I’m ready to count down the days until the start of the 2026 season. 😃

So that was the outcome tonight, and we’re supposed to pretend it all works? Would Love had won with the old system? Would Joey had won last year?

Context matters.

The way it happened, by way of manufactured tire failures leading into a GWC to be the final end all, be all championship decider, was appalling.

Larson as a champion isn't a bad thing on its own.

Seen this posted.

Right driver won. So what's the issue? Is it we want 36 back, with the old Latford system? Cause we're definitely not getting that back if we get 36 back.

Terrible break for Hamlin. I genuinely feel bad for the guy. He had this thing won.

Larson has no business being champion. Wasn’t even a factor all day. Honestly his weakest season overall in 5 years.

Not a single mention of Blaney beating Brad to win the race in a photo finish…

Glad NASCAR thinks a GWC lottery is a deserving way of crowning champions. It’s broken. Everything about this sport and its presentation is broken.

Between last night and tonight. Throw this whole system in the garbage.

These lame "overtime" finishes do this more often than not in Nascar, hand the win to some who did not deserve it.

But they don't dare complain about it or Nascar will tell them to go find someplace else to race and make the millions you are now.

Show me where I said any of that? I said in another post ONLY ONE DRIVER WAS SCREWED THIS WEEKEND. That being Connor. The playoffs do suck, I been saying that. But I'm not gonna pretend we didn't get the right outcome. Because we did, but we still yes need to get rid of it.

One of the dumbest decisions of all time by Denny Hamlin's crew chief. You don't have to win the race, just beat Larson and Briscoe. You do whatever it takes to stay in front of them. Taking 2 tires, Denny would've been ahead and had the better car. Talk about a choke job. That crew chief should be on unemployment on Monday.

If Denny comes back next year from this, I will be genuinely shocked.
I posted a thread about this. No way do I see Denny coming back next year for this. It wouldn't shock me if he left the sport. I imagine he would still keep 23XI racing, but it might end up like Tony Stewart and Stewart-Haas Racing, where it's just his name on it, but he has little or nothing to do with it.

I could easily see Denny going the Carl Edwards route and just walking away.

Pfffft.

Well in a way you’re right. But I don’t get what format you’re using, but full season format under this points structure shouldn’t in fact Byron be the champion? He was regular season points leader using this format. Did Larson make up ground enough to have won it? I’m speaking strictly from this format, this format was designed to capture new younger fans, casuals and the like. It’s designed really to have the BEST car on championship Sunday which was today to win the championship. Under this format today Denny was robbed, he was the best car. He was robbed by a caution of not his doing and lost the championship. Which again I’ll say you’re right. My point being, today illustrates what a flaming pile of excrement is used to crown a champion. The idea of a playoffs was always illlogical and fleeting, today’s events illustrate that.

Exactly, If the car was as good as Denny said it was , he should of even stayed out.
He could of held them off for 2 championship laps , imo.

Depends on how you look at it. If all of this nonsense with Xfinity and now Cup gets rid of the made for TV gimmicks that gets in the way of racing, it will be worth it.
And that’s what I want….i want the RACING and the actual races themselves to be the focal point. Not this bloated, contrived system. I mean did NBC even interview the race winner or show how close the finish was?

Yea, I kind of thought as watching it go down “hey you might want to stay out…okay you’re coming down pit road, do two.” It’s kind of crazy they went 4 now that it’s had time to breath

Yeah. Larson came in 11 behind Byron. Won by 14 from what I've seen.

Yes, Denny got hosed by today's points system, I agree. But I look at it as the world correcting its self.

We can both agree this system does need to end I'm sure.
