Honest question: why is this race only 220 miles long, compared to the 400 and 500 mile long races at oval circuits?

The average speed is much lower at road courses (and short tracks) than large oval tracks, so you've got to reduce the lengh of the race if you want the actual race time (hours, minutes) to remain the usual length.
