Dale Jr. 2014 Champ contender?

I agree that they have probably reached their peak but I don't know how long the plateau is atop that peak, maybe several more seasons.

I imagine Kenseth would love to see how his sons career panned out. What else to accomplish but race against his kid? Harvick loves to race and feels like he just rejuvenated his career with SHR. Like Kenseth literally did this year, and Jimmie Johnson is here to break records. ATLEAST a decade in all three of those drivers IMO.

I really wonder where the up and comers are supposed to end up..

Drivers are lasting longer today. Better fitness . More attention to things like carbon monoxide. Safety features like seats and harnesses. Not sure , but in an era when most of the cars and powerplants are the same , the brain might be play a bigger part than ever.

If they'er good enough and have the patience, atop the peak in a vacated spot.

Has Jr ever even been in contention? I think he'd fold...
That has been his problem for most of his career after Sr. passed, don't know what you call it, lack of attention to details, numerous pit row speeding penalties etc. this year, after he blew up in the chase and all the pressure was off, he drove the wheels off the car, reminded me of when he was back in a Nationwide car. He even bumped a couple of cars that took his line.

I wouldn't mind seeing him win it.. I've just never seen him be the guy who has what it takes... You know that Montoya won as much as Jr in the time from when he started NASCAR until now?.... Thats a big part of it.. he's not gona win a cup if he can't even win races.

no argument there, Maybe with his new girlfriend, he has somebody to win for, this was one of his best years in a long time. He took some chances this year and hung it out a few times, I think he will be in the chase again, but to beat the 48..he is going to have to do some driving

The 88 team were in position to win several times this year, it just didn't happen. There is a difference in contending for wins and not winning, and not being good enough to even be in contention for a win.

I wouldn't make too much out of the 88 not winning this year. They are good enough to win.
The team seems to be getting better.
This.

Junior could have won a few races this year and he finished fifth in points, higher than everyone at HMS other than Six-Time. He had a good season. Heck, I feel like he had a good season going last year too until he got that concussion and had to miss a couple of races.

To be a championship contender, you have to make the Chase, and barring any major setbacks, Junior will likely do that again next year. He was pretty consistent this year and in 2012. As Greg said, the next step is winning races/being in contention for wins on a regular basis, and he's all but there at this point. I'm not quite sure where those who are questioning his motivation are getting that from, because if anything he seems hungrier for wins now than he's been in several years. The 88 team has proven they are capable of it. All that's left is to do it, and with continued improvement and a little luck, they will.

A decade ago. Drivers are Athletes, and older athletes on the wrong side of 35 don't do as well as the younger ones. His Window is closed.

I still think he's a nice guy though.
I'm not saying he's going to win the championship next year. There was a time when he was a championship contender.

Edwards almost won the championship in 2011 with no wins... Just sayin. And Earnhardt does have great consistency. Hes gotta be better at the last 25% of the race though. He tends to fade just a touch at the end

Another thing I like about junior. Because he is a personality, he gets hounded for interviews even if he has a bad day and he has had many. He doesn't stomp off and hide in the trailer like a lot of other drivers do when they aren't required by Nascar to give an interview. He tries his best to explain what happened and he isn't a jerk about it.

He did win one race that year. But yes, I agree with what you're saying.
