If you're not a fan of social media, this thread's not for you. You may as well not read any further.

I read this article and found these numbers interesting. Looking at this, is it any wonder why his social media value is skyrocketing?

Just how valuable is Earnhardt? And how impressive is his social media presence? The social media valuation company Hookit came out with new data this month. The company uses social media interactions (likes, shares, comments) and video views (of at least three seconds on Twitter/Instagram or 15 seconds on YouTube) to determine an athlete's social media worth and popularity.

From Tuesday to Friday of the week he announced on a Tuesday that 2017 would be his last year, interactions on his announcement -- based on posts from his network and six different hashtags -- reached 1.78 million.

He has gained 396,382 new followers this year (including 238,227 on Twitter) through April 31, and overall he has had 34.7 million interactions and views -- more than 30 million more than the next top driver (Jimmie Johnson).

Following Earnhardt and Johnson on Hookit's interactions/views list were Danica Patrick, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski and Chase Elliott.

According to Hookit, Earnhardt has had more interactions and views on his posts than all other NASCAR drivers combined so far this year. His social media value from Feb. 23 to March 1 (the Daytona 500 was Feb. 26) was 86.4 percent of the earned value of all drivers -- boosted by the NASCAR-produced video of his father, set to music by the Zac Brown Band. For 2016, he had a 32.2 percent piece of the social media value pie.

Hookit determined Earnhardt's 2017 earned social media value for sponsors at $21.8 million -- $1.8 million through Twitter, $4.6 million through Instagram and $15.4 million through Facebook. Earnhardt has 5.6 million social media followers on Facebook (more than 3 million), Twitter (more than 2 million) and Instagram (nearly 500,000).

I've been on this forum for so long it's like part of my family. I don't get updates on who just posted what and what it was about. I can pick and choose what I want to see. I have my wife's old phone and her facebook is constantly giving me updates. I can't wait to eliminate it.

Turn off the FB notifications or simply uninstall the app.

Just turn facebook push notifications off on the phone settings

I guess it depends on which of the multitude of constantly shifting definitions of 'Social Media' you accept.

My working definition excludes forums. First, they predate the term. Second, just because something is on line doesn't make it 'social media'. Third, the content is limited to a specific topic (at least in theory).

I consider 'Social Media' to include sites used to share personal information and personally generated content; develop and maintain personal relationships; build public awareness of a brand (Junior); etc. I'm not a gamer, but I don't think I consider MORPGs as social sites, at least not the gaming portion itself.

Your definition may differ and include different online aspects.

EDIT: Ironhead wasn't a big fan of restrictor plate racing, but that didn't keep him from cashing the checks.

Alternative facts here.

My definition of social media is the actual definition of social media

Websites and other online programs that allow users to create and share information with other users (social networking). Online forums fall under this category homie.

Hint,if you or anyone you know are in job market go back and look at your social media. Most companies look at your social media accounts. They look for drug use, inappropriate photos, discriminatory comments among other things. We are going through a hiring process now with recent graduates. It is amazing what some people post online.

I wasn't offering facts, just my opinions. Your def works for me. Call me self-delusional if you'd like, but the only place you'll find me on line besides here is a bird watching forum, and I mostly lurk there.

I have two problems with most forms of social media, one technical, one personal. The technical one is that most are dominated by content I'm not interested in. I don't care what Kenseth had for breakfast, what he's reading, who he's listening to. All I care is what's up with his racing career. I've given up on finding electronic tools to effectively filter the grain from what I consider the chaff.

The second took me a long time to figure out. As an IT pro, I thought I would take to social media like Kyle Larson to a high groove. I struggled with blogs, LinkedIn, Twitter, and a couple of others before I realized the real problem wasn't with the technology. It's that these are electronic versions of stuff I wasn't doing and didn't enjoy in the first place. Enabling personal interactions via electronic media didn't make me any better or any more interested in them than I was with face to face interactions in the 'real world'. That's why I stick to the give-and-take of forums related to specific topics; they're more debate oriented, with minimal interaction on a personal level. I was very active on an IT forum for almost 15 years before the site sponsors overhauled it three years ago and the membership deserted in droves. I've had no contact with the other members since, and no interest in finding them. As I type this, I realize it's actually the root of the first 'problem' too.

Ive had a few colleagues get rejected because of what they posted in college. Its wise to either avoid posting unprofessional content like you said, or even create a professional account alongside a personal.

That being said, there are plenty of companies who understand that college kids are going to be college kids and partying just helps with healthy workplace camaraderie.

Social media is a tool that you can use how you want.

I prefer Twitter because you follow who interests you and you get a ton of real time information.

Facebook sucks but is a good way to stay in touch with people if you move a lot.

It aint all bad when it comes to hiring a young engineer, her facebok photos often come in handy.

That's hard to believe..... but..... I am not questioning you....

Yep. Dale has 2.1 million twitter followers. Lebron James has 32.5 million.

A little more perspective. On InstaGram Savannah James (Lebron's wife) has 730k+ followers. Dale has 435k.
