It was the time of “Back to the Future,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and the first “Lethal Weapon” movie and featured soundtracks provided by Madonna, Robert Palmer and Guns N’ Roses.

Yes, the 1980s are back.

At least that time period – from 1985-89 – will be the theme for Darlington Raceway during its Southern 500 weekend Sept. 1-3.

In NASCAR, that era included championships won by Darrell Waltrip (1985), Dale Earnhardt (1986-87), Bill Elliot (1988) and Rusty Wallace (1989).

“As we enter the third year of our throwback campaign, we’ll be focusing on drivers, personalities and moments that were compelling in that timeframe, such as the emergence of Dale Earnhardt Sr., Bill Elliott winning the first Winston Million, and the growth of the NASCAR Xfinity Series (formerly the Busch Grand National Series),” Darlington Raceway President Kerry Tharp said in a statement. “It will be an exciting era for the track and industry to celebrate.”

If Dillon had at least won a race or two, I might be okay with it. But he is definitely undeserving to sit behind the wheel of that car at this point.

I'm so glad they are doing this again, and will be for the foreseeable future. I love seeing all the amazing throwback paint schemes. Wonder who'll be the person who does the full on throwback this year.

I hope Chase has a scheme like Bills

Everyone scared to death of a black #3 on the track again , like if it finished dead last it would somehow cause people to leave the track saying "ya know what that dale earnhardt wasn't really that good when you think about it?"
Come on guys lol

I'd guess Austin will be in a Wrangler throwback. I hope so anyway, that era Wrangler car is one of my favorites of all time(the Goodwrench scheme is too).

I hope someone drives an Alan Kulwicki Zerex throwback.

I wish Hendrick still ran the 25 so they could do a proper Tim Richmond throwback...

As part of its throwback weekend, celebrating the 1985-89 era of the sport, Darlington Raceway will be honoring Dale Earnhardt Sr. and the 30th anniversary of his 1987 Bojangles' Southern 500 victory.

On Saturday night, September 2, the track will host An Evening Honoring Dale Earnhardt Sr., a can't-miss event, which will feature a panel of personalities talking about the seven-time NASCAR champion, including children Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kelley Earnhardt Miller, Kerry Earnhardt and longtime team owner Richard Childress.

I'm a huge fan of the Darlington Throwback race. Everything from listening to a Ken Squire commentary to the old sponsor colors.

That's for sure. You know, I read somewhere recently that the Earnhardt's are what is wrong with this sport. It's probably not a good thing that Darlington would host such an event during their Throwback celebrations. I'm really not sure what they could be thinking.

The Pettys, too. And don't get me started on those Allison boys.

I really hope this is televised

The best throw back imo was Darlington 2015. Edwards Kesolowski, and Harvick a long green run near the end, battling and tire management too. The old paint schemes are great, but just a bonus.
Good old hard racing is what it is all about.

I don't give a crap who's driving it, it'd be great to see it back out on the track again.
This. It'd be cool to show a whole new generation of fans the awesomeness of a GM Goodwrench 3 paint scheme ( probably a black DOW #3) back on a NASCAR track.

I wonder if a car with a throwback paint scheme will win at Darlington this year? They're 0-for-2 thus far.
