Well it was a wet one. Tailgated till 9pm on Saturday only to have the race postponed. Then saw quite the rain shortened demo-derby on Sunday. All that time sitting around got me thinking about Daytona. They are spending and astronomical amount of money in improvements to that track. Its pretty spectacular how much construction is going on. I think their money could be well spent in something that will really make the racing better at Daytona.

Here goes nothing...

Help Goodyear develop a tire that can withstand the loads of a 3,500lb car at full horsepower. The restrictor plate has got to go. In my opinion, the only way to stop these 42 car wreck fests is if they actually have to lift for the corner. The only way to do that, is to let the cars go faster. Period. Now I understand that changes will have to be made to the walls/fences etc. But I feel thats the only way to get rid of these giant pack wrecks that are probably more dangerous than cars going 230, 240 or 250 mph.

Thoughts?

A tire being able to handle those speeds isn't their issue. It's keeping the cars from flying into the fencing. With the earlier talk of reducing horsepower on all engines, it would be nice if that can carry over into Daytona and Talladega where they could get rid of the plates. But I don't see that happening.

what would racing look like without plates on the big tracks? single file? would you be able to pass? and could you make a roof flap that would keep the car on the ground?

Only one way to find out. I guess im just over the big packs/big wrecks deal.

Sorry. What I meant was a tire that would fall off but still handle those speeds.

Here's my long shot at making Daytona racing safer... invert the tri-oval. Make the track bend towards the infield and away from the seats. Put pit road where the tri-oval is now (but make it straight of course).

Crazy, yes. Safe for fan, yes. Will Brian France approve? Yes.

See this is what Im talking about. Thinking outside the box!

How about standing starts instead of rolling starts at Daytona and Talladega?

I noticed in the construction update that they'll have 100,000 seats in 2016,,,down from the 168,000 they now have. Brain's solution to falling attendance? Remove seating so the facility looks full on TV with fewer people attending. Freakin' brilliant.

Rusty Wallace tested a car at Talladega in 2004 on which the car had its restrictor plate removed. The car reached a top-end speed of 228 miles per hour on the backstretch and had an average lap speed of 221 mph.

Daytona & Talladega's restrictor plate racing continue to pull in viewers. I don't think you're going to be seeing any kind of drastic changes.

Like F1....going through the gears at daytona on starts! fun to watch!

I think if anything this might break up the pack, atleast for the first 10 laps. And it might make restarts not a guaranteed 'big one'.

Works for me! Maybe handling might actually come into play and they wont be able to flat foot it around all day.

Yeah I thought they were adding more seats until I learned that they are tearing down the entire Superstretch grandstands!

didn't you go to the race, if so, did they pick up anything on the track, from the caution that helped Jr & Danica, i never saw the clean up truck go on the track on tv, but that don't mean nothing

There is no way anyone in their right mind would let them loose at Daytona and Dega unrestricted. With the gen 6 car they would be at 245 mph or better in no time.

The first row of seats at the track would start at the current 50th row, kind of like they did at Bristol when the World Of Outlaws went there.

I think you've found the trick to selling out Daytona, just knock out the first 49 rows.

I was at the race that Dale Sr. won his first Daytona 500, my seat was on the back stretch as high as you can get and you still can not see the front stretch at all. You loose them coming out of turn 4 and see them again when they hit the bank in turn one. In front of the grandstands you see the tops of the cars. Awful viewing seats back there.

I've never claimed to be in my right mind... :owquitit:

I only really remember two big wrecks that caused cautions, and there were extensive cleanups for both. The others were for debris and for rain.
