I'm looking at moving here in a couple months to an apartment at the racetrack and the only expense I'd have to invest in is cable.

DIRECTV is what I have now where I live. I was looking at Dish and DIRECTV.

DIRECTV's $45/month package has FOX Sports 1, NBCSN, FOX Sports 2, MASN, MAVTV and Al Jazeera America. If I go down to the $40/month package, there's no MASN, FOX Sports 2 or NBCSN.

Dish's $40/month package includes FOX Sports 1, NBCSN, FOX Sports 2 and Al Jazeera America. MASN and MAVTV aren't available on Dish.

The other channels I watch are the usual basic cable channels, USA, ION, TNT, ESPN, MSNBC and so on...

I'm leaning towards DIRECTV because MASN is almost a make or break decision and I've heard a lot of horror stories about Dish but I want to hear from people who have had one or the other or both.

DIRECTV's $5/month more but MASN and MAVTV make up for that cost.

I personally like DIRECTV better, for the lineup and cost, but It's been a few years since I had Dish

Yeah, I'm very much leaning towards DIRECTV. It's more expensive but worth it. Dish not having MASN and MAVTV is almost a deal breaker altogether.

I'm surprised DP hasn't gotten in on this thread, he had DIRECTV and changed to Dish.

He must be a Weather Channel fan. :p
Yep. But they are upgrading Weather Nation so we'll see how that works out. I hope they get it right and It doesn't turn out to be another one of those with obnoxious weather persons standing in hurricanes, floods, tornado's and such to prove how macho they are.

I like WeatherNation from what I've seen of it so far. The Weather Channel would be viable if they aired, what's it called, oh yeah, weather, instead of a bunch of crappy reality shows.

Hurricane coverage is always a comedy.

YEP.

I like Direct, hate haggling over the prices tho my bill is about 98 month...Never had dish
Same here. Our bill was $50 when we joined DTV and now it's over 100. We had no TV at all weekend before last, and for the month before that we would have channels just randomly go off-air. We've also lost access to a great swatch of channels with no bill reduction. It's become a joke and we've kept threatening to switch to U-verse since it's no available. Supposedly TWC was supposed to come out and start laying lines but that never happened.

Also I had them put a DTV box in the RV at no extra charge and It works great. I don't get HD but who cares, I'm roughing it. :D

Never saw the thread but since I was brought up.

I had DirecTV from the mid 1990's until early last year. I never had any real problem with them other than late 2012 when I wanted to upgrade to the whole home DVR. They were going to charge me over $600 for the upgrade. At the same time they gave that service away to new customers. I figured being a customer for over 15 years that maybe they could treat me a little better than that. They wouldn't, so I switched to Dish Network. Dish provided me with two DVR's each with a 2TB drive that can both be used from any television in my house. For a while I had both services in my house running side by side. Both companies produce high quality HD programming and I'd be happy with either of them. Neither of them are willing to do anything for loyal customers though. They are interested in getting new subscribers signed to two year contracts. They are all the same in that regard.

I will tell you this though. Dish Network's Hopper DVR is sweet. No more commercials on network television in this house. The Hopper takes car of that for us. We push play and go commercial free for the entire broadcast. Not another button to be pushed. Can DirecTV match that? They couldn't a year ago. I am not sure what their current capabilities are but with the Hopper I can record all four major networks and two other channels at the same time for a total of six channels at a time. It records every show on ABC, CBS, FOX & NBC every single night of the week and then deletes it automatically after 8 days unless I choose to protect that particular series. If anyone has any questions on how this works let me know and I'll do my best to answer.

Not sure where you get your information but both MASN and MAVTV are available on Dish Network. I have both under my subscription with Dish Network.

It's not big deal. I just wanted to make sure that Dish wasn't being sold short. Like I said..... I subscribed to both for a short period of time an now exclusively to Dish Network. They are both excellent services. Neither one though more than the other regardless of what anyone tells you. When the system is set up properly they both provide top notch service. People are going to tout whatever system that they have as being the best but I can be pretty impartial when it comes to either service.

i'm also glad they dropped the weather channel, I tuned to it by accident, and they were naming random storms in the US...WTF

Is this on the $40/month package?
I am not sure about your regional sports network. I believe that mine is. I subscribe to all of the regional sports networks anyonw so I can't honestly answer that. I know that I pay $5 more a month for MAVTV along with some other channels. It is not part of any base package. I would call their number to talk to them about what is available under each of the packages. I subscribe to the $45 one.

Regional sports network w/ DIRECTV is MASN. On Dish, it's FOX Sports Carolinas.

That may very well be a difference maker. MASN airs all the Orioles games. FOX Sports Carolinas is basically FOX Sports 1... all basketbore all the time.

So, DIRECTV charges $25/month for HD. Yeah, I can live with standard definition - especially since MAVTV and AJAM, the channels I watch the most, are SD-only.

I have dish, It more than doubled in price. I was nice at first and then I kind of had a temper tantrum on them. They lowered it for 10 months.
I liked Comcast. The only reason I left was their billing is crazy.
I found at the time of swithching, Direct TV was higher and the local business did not
want to answer questions and made you feel you were inconveniencing them.

You bitched and moaned like a baby and said sd was unwatchable when you moved last time. Lets get the stories straight

I've figured out how to make it watchable - turn the sharpness all the way off and viola. I'll also get an antenna so I can get ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX in HD.

I might still pay for HD but $25 is a total ripoff. IF dp is right and Dish has MAV and if they don't charge extra for HD, I might go with them. NFL Sunday Ticket on DIRECTV is an enticing reason to get DTV though since the Jaguars games are never shown nationally... though the Jags do play in market twice but I'll probably go to both of those games.

Regardless, there's a HUGE picture difference between SD and HD. Not sure it's worth $25/month though for one TV. No wonder the majority of Americans still watch SD-only.

I agree it's a huge difference, altho its a rip off I have to have HD

They charge you $5/month for the box and then $25/month to use the box if it's an HD box. Absolutely comical. I can buy my own box for $10 and not have to pay rental fees. Hell, I have four DIRECTV SD boxes up in Baltimore that I wouldn't have to pay rental fees on. IDGAF.
