Does Nascar need a champion?

I'm pretty sure I know what this will turn into and where it'll end up going but I'm still going to ask.

Does Nascar need a season champion or do they run all the races, say to hell with points and let the driver with the most wins and his/her fans claim bragging rights?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

We need someone on that trophy.

NASCAR needs a champion just like every other major sport has a champion. Fans of a driver can still boast about their driver having the most wins as well. Not sure why the two can't coexist. They always have.

Good question.

I think just hand out the actual trophies for winning the race and call it a season.

Winning the cup is like winning a WWE tittle these days.

VAdirt made a funny--yet appropriate comparison to how if you're the last man standing at a royal rumble, you get to be at wrestlemania.

It's just pure entertainment at this point.

The biggest sporting event in the world doesn't have a champion :)

There are only four major sports in my world that I'm concerned with, NASCAR, NFL, NHL & MLB. Every one of them crowns a Champ each year.

While I wish the post season for NASCAR never was invented, it was. It's here & it'll be here next year and the year after that and on and on..... I used to be one of the biggest voices on here against it because the comparison of current NASCAR champions to past champions was lost in my eyes. It took me a long time but I finally came to accept that fact. So, they've made a change again only this time it created not just more excitement over the season, it ramped it up even more over the final 10 races. Something that it certainly was lacking since 2004. Not one of the other sports that I follow determine their champion by the most number of wins over a season. They are all determined by some sort of playoff system and not always does the team with the most wins take home the hardware. I'm okay with that. Many on here aren't. I can respect that. I was there too.

It's simply an alternative idea to the stick and ball format which many are very adamant that Nascar is not and shouldn't be compared to.

Oooo ur a clever one  lol

Seriously though... worst idea I've ever heard.

Oh it is?

That's exactly what we have now. Partly anyway. The point standings are completely worthless for 26 weeks straight. Then worthless some more after you win a race and advance to another round.

I've read worse ideas.

My intent is not to trash the current system. In fact, I prefer it over the previous decade's system.

It's simply an idea that I feel deserves some discussion :)

I never get the argument that it can't be compared to other sports. It is a sport where people compete for our entertainment. That's a sport to me. It's entertainment to me.

While Nascar (or any auto racing for that matter) is for the fan's enjoyment/entertainment, there are two fundamental differences which, IMO, set racing apart; 1. In Nascar, you have to beat 42 other opponents all at the same time and 2. In none of those other major sports can you ever be a champion without winning.

Yes, Nascar needs a champion and he should sport the number 1 on his car while he is champion so everyone knows. number 1 should be reserved for the reigning champ only IMO

He should also sport the #20 on his car ;)

So, you're in favor of making it exactly like them then? ;)

I still haven't been able to figure out why that matters so much. A lot of people go back to that as a reason to not compare to stick and ball.. but really... why does that matter so much? It shouldn't.. NASCAR is a professional sport like any other... just better.

Not exactly like them. :)

We already have hockey's fights, baseball's bats and football's cursing/swearing/yelling/egomania so I think that we're good there. lol

Because it a requirement to win so if you're not in it to win, it doesn't matter.

NASCAR needs a champion only to get the drivers to run all the races. If not, it would be a lot like golf where players pick and chose the events they wish to compete in. The PGA has had a "champion" the last several year. Unless you're a die hard golf fan, most people cannot name the champion but can tell you who won The Masters.

Which one of these teams would any of you rather see as your champion at the end of the season. A team that wins 2 races but doesn't finish in the top 5 the rest of the season, or a team that doesn't win any races but finishes 2nd in all of the races? I have to go with the team with the most consistency. I would much rather see a consistent team as a champion then a 2 shot wonder. I use the word team because drivers doesn't win championships...teams do. A team is basically just identified by the drivers name.

Nice fishing pole, 17D.

Andy, it's a valid question that I feel spawned some discussion with valid points being made on all sides. There's nothing political, religious, racist, bigoted, communist, sexual, separatist or trolling about it.

Please try to understand that not everything is meant to antagonize.

And finally...

Playoffs make sense in sports where different teams play different opponents at different venues at different points in the season. You'll be hard-pressed to find two exactly similar schedules in other sports.

There's no variation in auto racing schedules.

You'd have to have watched championships unfold before The Chase to fully understand why it matters ;)

Absolutely. Problem is that all of the merchandising folks would **** their drawers with pre-Champ stock. Those numbers matter apparently. Can you imagine Poop Poop pooping his drawers over having to give up the "3" after all of the BS if Watch Holder wins it all?
