Storyline – Following Dover’s track surface is as easy as black and white: There are many things that are unique about Dover Motor Speedway, but for Goodyear perhaps the most important is the concrete surface. Rubbering in a concrete track is a special challenge, so Goodyear designs its tread compounds to specifically do that. The race then becomes a balance of laying rubber under the green flag when the cars are at full speed and the tires are wearing versus during caution periods when rubber gets picked back off the cooling track by the still hot tires. This will happen all race as tires continue to wear and turn the white track to black and then back to white again.

“Concrete tracks are always a challenge because of the relative smoothness of surface,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “The smoother the surface, the harder it is to lay rubber down. Because of that, we’ve spent a lot of time and effort on developing tread compounds for Dover that do just that. The interesting phenomenon is how you can literally see the tire tracks of the cars under caution as they pick the rubber back up as the track cools. That doesn’t last long, though, because the track begins to take rubber quickly on the next run as the cars get back to racing and tires begin to wear again.”
Notes – Cup teams return to Dover on established tire set-up: Being on 18-inch bead diameter tires, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity Series at Dover this weekend . . . both this left-side and right-side tire feature the same compounds and constructions that Cup teams ran at Dover last season . . . this specific tire combination is unique to Dover . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars will not run inner liners in any of their tires.

I’ll be there high in turn 1
Nice. I went to Dover in 2016. It was interesting because I took my dad and he had been there in the late 80's and was telling me that the place was jam-packed full then and none of the seats had been removed for advertising space. The crowd was half-way decent for today's standards but still must have been a spectacle back in the day. I always have felt like Dover is one track where the raw speed is more visible. It's also one of my favorite tracks to race on simulators. When you really nail a lap you feel like you are going 300MPH. lol

It's so similar on a sim to how a 410 races on a half mile. Just barely in control with multiple grooves you can set up for

Were you at the Larson vs Kenseth race? That’s still my favorite race of 30+ that I’ve ever been to

Good to see that STP on the hood.

A throwback, for whatever reason, needs more than just a look-a-like paint scheme.
So Petty needs to pull a 71 Plymouth or one of his Pontiac's out of mothballs to be genuine throwback.

"genuine"

A curious use of the word.

imo, an ideal throwback would have the same paint scheme, sponsor, and number.

Larson's throwback this year is about all that one could possibly hope for.

I must be getting old because I barley remember that but yes it was that race. I was pulling for both Kasey Kahne in the 5 and Chase in the 24 at that point and they finished 3rd and 4th so I thought that was pretty cool.

78 and partly cloudy on Sunday. Can you ask for better? I don’t think so
I hope that holds. I don't trust the weather people this time of the year around here. They call severe thunderstorm at the drop of a hat....and it doesn't even rain most of the time.
