CLEVE R. WOOTSON Charlotte Observer

Two sons of Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert were killed today in a head-on collision in Cornelius.

Jon Herbert, 17, and James Herbert, 12, died when their Mazda3 collided with another vehicle, according to a statement from Doug Herbert Racing.

Cornelius police have not confirmed the identities of anyone involved in the wreck, though, in a statement, officers said two other people were injured - a man, who was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, and a 12-year-old girl.

Investigators said the Mazda was headed east on Jetton Road and attempted to pass a third vehicle in the westbound lane, against the flow of traffic. The Mazda driver lost control and was struck by a 2004 Hummer. The wreck occurred on Jetton Road at Meta Road, near the county’s Jetton Park. The family’s home is also on Jetton Road, which was closed for about two hours while police investigated.

Cornelius Police say their investigation, which includes a wreck reconstruction, could take up to six weeks.

Doug Herbert was in Phoenix for preseason testing when the wreck happened around 10 a.m., his statement said. He was headed home to be with his family.

The boys attended SouthLake Christian Academy, which will have pastoral counseling available for students on Monday. A special Chapel Service will also be held.

“Jon was busy completing his senior year and looking forward to graduation and college,” said Headmaster C. Wayne Parker II, in an e-mail. “Jon enjoyed the opportunities he had at SouthLake to serve others in the community and took advantage of every opportunity that was available. James was busy settling into middle school. His smiling face always brightened the room.”

Condolences can be sent to Raymer Funeral Home, 16901 Old Statesville Road, Huntersville, N.C. 28078.

In lieu of flowers, Doug Herbert asks that people make a donation to the Speedway Children’s Charities in Jon and James Herbert’s name.
