Last Big Event $28,000 National 100 Three Weeks and Counting
PHENIX CITY AL – The East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City AL and it’s neighboring city Columbus GA, is readying for the 28th edition of the annual “National 100” Dirt Super Late Model event. Scheduled to conclude the 2002 racing season November 1st – 3rd, the event comes just one month after the successful “Alabama State Championship Race” and track owner/promoter Billy Thomas tells of how this event has grown into the biggest “Open Competition” race for the South.
“We want to bring in the very best in the business for one big race”, Dixie (Speedway) has the “Shoot-Out” but it’s by invite only. This years National 100 race pays $28,000 to win and is one of the most prestigious events of the year. The 100 lapper pays a minimum of $1,000 just for earning a starting spot in the 24 car field. Until the new season kicks off again in Florida with February “SpeedWeeks” this event is it as far as the “Big Money” is concerned.
The National 100 has grown into such a spectacle the race is spread over three days of action and is a “must” of any dirt racing fan. “We’ve raised the stakes each season with an increase in the purse and this year’s no exception.” Defending Race Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg TN heads into the weekend as a “Odds on Favorite” at the AL/GA bordered facility. In the events 28 year history he’s taken the top prize home six times. October’s (State Race) winner, Clint Smith of nearby Senoia GA will also carry a lot of clout into the event.
A strong contingent of Local SLM’s, also work into the fray for the EAMS top money prize. Drivers such as multiple National 100 winner Bobby Thomas of Seale AL, and the ever popular seasoned veteran Dana Eiland of Salem AL always make the event more interesting for local fans. Through into the mix the likes of area racers; Ivedent Lloyd, Fletcher Cavandar and Southern All-Star 2002 Rookie of the Year contender Terrance Nowell of Phenix City and you’ve got the makings of a possible regional upset against the national superstars.
A large barrage of National SLM racers have already expressed their intent on invading this years National 100 event. Ranging from as close as Florida and Mississippi to as far North as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin racers come to challenge the EAMS high-banks. Recent World 100 winner Brian Birkhoffer (Iowa), two time-winner Randle Chupp of (North Carolina) and Florida racing ace Earl Pearson Jr have expressed interest in competing at this years event.
Friday night November 1st is Hot Lap Practice Night from 6PM to 10PM EST. Saturday November 2nd cars take to the track as early as 9AM EST. Qualifying for the SLM’s with heats following don’t begin until the evening hours (estimated after 6PM EST).
There will be a Chapel service Sunday morning for those attending the race at 8 AM. On Sunday racing begins again “Bright N’ Early” at 9AM EST with “B” Main consi’s (SLM’s included) rolling on to the track. The big 100 lap “A” Main feature is scheduled to start around the 5PM EST mark Sunday evening.
