Earnhardt Jr. wants to stay at HMS: Although #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr., 36, has another year remaining on his deal with Hendrick Motorsports, he didn't want the next contract to become a distraction. That's why he enlisted his sister/confidant/business manager, Kelley, to expedite the process. I'm not in the middle of it," Earnhardt said. "Kelley and Marshall (Carlson, HMS president and Chief Operation Officer) are talking it out. I haven't even been in discussions. I called Rick and I said, 'Let's get this going,' and he said, 'Cool.' I told him, 'I'm going to let Kelley do my end,' and he said, 'I'm going to let Marshall do my end,' and they're handling it. I'm fortunate that I have good people around me that I trust enough to handle those kind of things. I could let Kelley do it from the ground up and not even worry about it, just not even have any questions or doubts. Even when she's finished with everything, I don't go in there and go, 'Man, I would have done this different,' or "I think this number should be different or should be better or worse.' She comes to me and tells me what's going on and I say, 'That sounds great! Keep going,' (laughs). They're obviously one of the best places in the garage if not THE best team in the garage to be with and I wouldn't want to be anyplace else. No way." Junior said there's no set timetable to wrap up the contract. He'd just like to have it in place before the end of the season so his concentration remains on competition and not external distractions. He understands firsthand and from watching other drivers how disruptive and damaging the uncertainty of a driver's status can be to teams and sponsors. The rumored five year extension would cover Earnhardt until he's 42. "I just want to get it done before we get into the offseason," Earnhardt said. "I have another year to go, but I was sitting there and seeing how Carl (Edwards) and those guys seeing how much attention it draws to Carl and those guys and me, when I was in my last contract year. I was like, 'Hey, Rick, let's knock this out and we won't have to worry about it next year. You just tell me what you want to do. If you want to keep me as your driver, I'm happy to stay. I'm really happy where I'm at and if that's the way you feel, let's go ahead and do it. Why wait until next year? 'Cause the press wants to know what's going on and we won't have to worry about that.'" Earnhardt says there is "no pressure" with the current negotiations. Very humbly, he said the decision for him to remain in the Hendrick Motorsports stable was dependent on "Mr. H."(in part from FoxSports and PRN's Garage Pass)(7-11-2011)

Hate to say it, but if Dale Jr. does become available (and I don't see it happening), how many Cup owners are going to be knocking on his door?

I'd want to stay with Hendrick, too, if I was Jr.. Free agency sometimes has a way of humbling people.

All of them. Performance or not, his merchandise still sells.

Go to a race, sit in the stands and watch what happens when Junyer wrecks or blows an engine. Used to be, if Junyer wrecked, at least 50% of the grandstands would clear out just like that. That's gotten better over the years -- the Kasey Kahne fangirls have suddenly turned in to Kyle Busch fans and the Junyer fans are actually rooting for other drivers (or, at least, against a couple other drivers).

Not sure whats happened to him lately. Either the golden horseshoe fell out, or things are souring. This weekend will tell for sure, as he usually always runs near the front at Loudon.

IMHO it seems like he has started down hill since he and his step mom broke away. I recall as soon as he started the downhill run and blew engines there was talk of sabotage.

I don't know how "news worthy" this really is...I mean is there any expectation that he WOULDN'T want to stay at Hendrick? Why would he leave? I think Hendrick has more reason to get rid of him than he has to actually want to leave. But neither will happen. Junior is in the best equipment that he is going to be in and Hendrick is making a killing from having Junior through sponsors, merchandise etc...

I honestly think Junior will be with Hendrick until he decides to give it up...

While I understand he sells more stuff than anyone else and has all the sponsor deals and that makes up for his lack of performance(usually) on the track. However you have to wonder how long that will last. I mean if he doesn't win again how long will the fans stay behind him?

18 or 20 Cup Wins..& the Last Name... Many Millions a year.forevere!!:beerbang:

I would agree with you here if you were talking about any other driver...but most the Jr. fans I know will cheer for him until he retires or they die. I know people who honestly believe he is the "future Nascar Champion" as they put it. Heck, I have one friend who has already predicted that he will win the championship this year. I do not mean that as an insult to Jr. fans by any means...I am just giving examples of people in my area.

I am a Jr fan. I'll be a fan of his no matter how he runs. Just like Robby, I'm a fan of his regardless of how he does. I'm not one of those that are fans only when the driver is doing good, cause to me those aren't fans.

And I see nothing wrong with that and honestly think it is the way it should be. I mean I do not switch who I like in any sport. I was just trying to make a point about the other post.

So basically your saying your not like Andy?

If Jeff never won again, I'd still be his fan. It is a lot more fun when he's running well, though. Just sayin'! :)

I will be silent about this topic. I get seriously razzed about my favorite driver all the time but I still support her, always have, always will. Nothing will change that.:)

I agree totally! I mean I been a fan his since 1995, I see no need to turn back now lol.

I totally understand why Jr. fans continue to be Jr. fans, I don't think losing is a reason to stop. However, the only other point I was trying to make is how the Jr. fans in my area seem to be in denial declaring that he is "the best" and a "future champion." I don't run around saying that Jeff is the best...I mean drivers prime come and go for sure....but that doesn't mean I am not still a fan.

Surely the "best" driver doesn't change from race to race and drivers will readily admit that there's a certain amount of luck involved.

My personal opinion is that Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart are the two best drivers in Nascar and have been for a while.

I suppose many fans have the idea that just because they're a drivers fan, it's makes that guy the best - that simply is not the case.

Kenseth is my favorite driver but I'm certainly not foolish enough to proclaim him the best. Top 5 I think, though.

Excellent post man...you get EXACTLY what I am trying to say! lol

I think if you are talking pure driving talent then yeah Stewart, Gordon and maybe even Kyle Busch are up there for sure...
