#99 Fails post race inspection at Las Vegas: been told the oil tank lid was not secured on the winning #99 Ford of Carl Edward's and found during post race inspection at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The car failed post race inspection and will keep the win, but will face points penalties and a fine. NASCAR usually announces penalties late Tuesday afternoons.(3-2-2008)

Yikes..

What kind of advantage, if any does one get by this? Or is this a safety precaution?

Looks like Carls first points lead in the Cup series might be very short lived.

Is that something that could happen during the race? Why would they try something that obvious?

Yes and your right, espically if several teams had the same problem in a prior race. If its the oil tank lid, meaning the part that boxes the oil tank in, I don't think I see anything dangerous, but if its the oil tank cap it's self, then fire could be a problem, not to mention hot oil all over the place. Duane

That was a pretty stupid move being they nailed some cars at Daytona for the same infraction they can't say oops there. Maybe they should've gone ahead and checked Biffle and Kenseth too. Those Roush cars were all pretty fast.

It also could have come loose during the race and was not intentional...

He still should get penalized. :idunno:

NASCAR set their standards with the Robby Gordon incident. Either they need to admit they were wrong for penalizing Robby or they need to be consistent.

Lets do post race inspections of cars that have crashed and go back onto the track that and see how many loose and saftey hazard crap are on thoes cars.:idunno:

The predecent has been set.

Edwards needs to be docked 100 driver points, 100 owner points, and crew chief suspended for 6 races.

Nascar has already set the precedent.

If they dock or fine Edwards anything less, you know Nascar is full of dog poop.

I think the penalty should've stuck for Edwards on pit road. The cameraman was a NASCAR cameraman, i.e. part of NASCAR, part of the track.

SPEED already said he DID NOT kick the tire away and was just in the way. I've seen instances before where crew members couldn't get a tire or something because of another car, crewman, official, etc. and the penalties have stuck.

Seems like there's a different precedent for the Roush Yates cars and the Hendrick cars again. Gonna be another year of this bs.

From what i heard this morning the problem lies with the cap is supposed to be screwed on, the one on Carl's car was not a screw cap.

So i dont think its an issue of something coming unscrewed during the race.....i could see that if the right part was used.

sounds like a small problem to me...but nascar needs to hand out the same fine they did to Robby Gordon.

The way I see, especially if Gordon loses his appeal, that Edwards should get an even bigger penalty. I mean it's one thing the find something in pre-race inspection (that was fixed before the car ever hit the track), but to find something wrong with the winner is, to me, a bigger infraction.

I agree.

I think if something is found in pre-qualifing inspection there should be no penelty. You go back to garage, fix it and get in the back of the inspection line again.

I agree with that 100% I have heard people argue, though, that the reason for the penalties during pre-race inspection is that the cars are supposed to be presented as race ready. But really, that should be the purpose of pre-race instection, to check that the car is race ready, and to not let it go until it is. If a car loses a day of practice because he couldn't pass tech, that should be the end of it.

Look at Indy 500. There, the cars have to go through inspection before qualifying. If they don't make it, they don't hit the track. And if they don't make it by the end of the day, run out of time, they don't make it onto the track that day. The could, essentially, miss the 500 if their car doesn't make tech.

So, I assume that Jimmie Johnson had too may oil tank lids on his car that were all fastened too tight ??:D

Ok, was the cover on during pre-race inspection? If it wasn't on the tech inspection missed it and there still should be a penalty and the inspectors need retraining. If it was on then the question becomes how did it come off.
Could it have worked itself off during the race? (ala JGordon's jacking bolts last year). Or, did someone have to intentionally and deliberately take the cover off to gain whatever advantage? If taken off then 100 points and $100k, in light of it already being penalized this season, seems about right or maybe even a little light.

thats how NHRA does it.

I totally agree.

Exactly and they need to be consistent with that! Right now they fine someone like Robby and then give other drivers chances to to fix it and get through. That makes no sense to me and exactly the reason people feel they give some teams breaks and bring down the hammer on others, like Robby. That's how they get the name NASCRAP!

Consistant and Nascar is the apitomy of an oxymoron. Duane (pardon my spelling)

NASCAR has 'issue' with No. 99

NASCAR has 'issue' with No. 99

There was an "issue" with Carl Edwards' No. 99 Ford in the inspection following his victory in Sunday's UAW-Dodge 500. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said the "lid on oil reservoir encasement -- the oil tank box - was found off of the car." Poston said the car would be taken to NASCAR's research and development center in Concord, N.C., for further checks. Determination of any penalties would be made following that. Five teams in the Nationwide Series were each fined $15,000 and 25 points for not having covers securely fastened in the race at Daytona in that series. They also were each suspended for six races.

If Gordon's appeal is heard and his penalties overturned and I'm not saying they should or shouldn't be, then Nascar is going to owe some teams a huge wad of money.

Either that or they'll have to look at each team individually for different infractions.

If Edwards failed post race inspection with something that's punishable than he should get what's consistant.

Whatever Nascar decides, they will not take the win away from him. Even if they open the hood and find a super charger, they wouldn't.

Poole said if you look when Carl is doing his victory flip you can see the cover off...

So it is Tuesday..where's the penalty?

They are not even mentioning anything anymore as it didn't happened...ummm Nascar..

Im not surprised.

They are sweeping it under the rug.

Roush and Hendrick probably have some sort of investment stake in Nascar, neither of their teams will ever get fined or severely penalized.

i guess you forgot what happened to Jimmy and Jeff last year didnt you..........

They said on Nascar Now that Wednesday would be the day we'd find out what was going to happen with Robby and Carl. I finally agree with Rusty Wallace on something: He said Robby should totally win his appeal and he believes every fan is rooting for him.

Rusty Wallace on ESPN last year: "You've got to applaud NASCAR, man, they're always so consistent with their penalties."

HUH?

Hey Rusty, are we watching the same NASCAR here? :XXROFL:

But then a few years back one of the teams, Roush??, took springs straight out of the box and they were a quarter inch short that no one caught. The springs were labeled incorrectly. And they still were penalized. Nascar held that the teams have to know what they are doing and not fully rely on the suppliers.

There is a difference though, that came from an outside supplier. The nose piece came directly from Dodge.
