I know there is a driver championship, owner championship and manufacturer championship but what about engine builders? I know in cup currently it is basically the same as manufacturer because there are so few engine builders. But what if they made that an actual category? Would that bring engine builders to our sport that dont necessarily build cars? (i.e. John Kaase)

It would have to be a big carrot for that to happen. Not that many folks have the craftsmanship that can make a 850HP push rod engine run at 8500 to 9000 rpm non stop and survive for 600 + miles. The r&d and learning curve would be long and very expensive.
Plus the fact that the major players in the game all have in house engineers building the engines, so, the market for their product would be very very small.

The engine builder who accumulates the most “MAHLE Points” in each event will receive $5,300. At the conclusion of the season, the top engine builder who has accumulated the greatest number of “MAHLE Points” will be awarded $100,000.

Points will be awarded for qualifying and finishing position. Qualifying points will be awarded based on qualifying position. The points are as follows: 1st – 5 points, 2nd – 3 points and 3rd – 1 point. If an ineligible team (one that does not run the decal) finishes among the top three, such team will NOT receive the qualifying points and the qualifying points will “roll over” to the next eligible team.

Engine builders for each of the top 15 finishing teams will receive points based on finishing position as follows: 1st – 15 points, 2nd – 14 points, 3rd – 13 points, etc., down to 15th place, which receives one (1) point. There is also a 5-point bonus for the team that leads the most laps. In the event an engine builder prepares engines for more than one team, the points will be accrued by the team and may not be combined. In the event an ineligible team finishes among the top 15 positions, such team will NOT receive the finishing points and such finishing points will “roll over” to the next eligible team.

At the conclusion of the season, in the event there is a tie for first, the engine builder whose team has the highest NASCAR season-end point total will be the recipient of the award.

Current standings:

Roush-Yates #2 - 169
Hendrick #24 - 166
Hendrick #48 - 161
Hendrick #88 - 160
Hendrick #4 - 149

shouldn't # 2 include penske ecu mapping ? ha!

Well at some point in the near future, the engines will change. Whether its smaller or different configuration or what who knows. I would think that could be a time for new engine builders to step in when the playing field is leveled a bit.

Not sure how it works with RYE, but TRD provides 3-4 maps and team engineers choose the map which is then set by a TRD engineer. Don't think Penske runs an exclusive map.

I like the idea a lot. Mahle does a great job, but typically that information doesn't show up until the Myers Awards Luncheon. Would like to see it more publicized. I am amazed that so many people don't get this nuance of the sport. A TRD Toyota is dramatically different than a TRIAD. Hendrick Chevys are different from ECR's, it really is only Ford that is with a single builder....RYR. I think the biggest problem with attracting new builders is that the manufacturers want to consolidate their resources to get the biggest bang for their buck. If a little dude, for example, wanted to build Fords, Ford is going to have to commit resources to that builder in order for him to have any chance against RYR obviously. Regardless, I would love to see more exposure for the builders.

All the builders seem to be doing a good job this year, minimal failures and setting track records nearly every week. None of them get the credit they deserve IMO

Honestly, I think that's why it's time to shake things up with a new motor specification. I have a call into the RTA, but Kauffman was on the phone with Holiday Inn while United Airlines and Geico were on hold. Busy dude. Brian France was still sleeping. :D
