Enjoy.

I think you mean Robin Pemberton, not Randy.
The sport has changed quite a bit since the Junior & Richard days.
I'm not saying others do not cheat, but no single modern-era crew chief has been busted and fined as often as Chad Knaus.
My point, simply, is that Chad is a cheater.

You ask any crew chief. They've all stated many times, and I've never heard one single crew chief say no when he's been asked if he's ever crossed that line or cheated. They all do it. It's just a matter of getting caught. They are busted and fined so much because they've won so much, when NASCAR inspects Johnson's cars, they are inspected with a fine tooth comb. They make sure they don't miss anything. Have you every watched them do Johnson's care in pre race inspection at a live event? If not, pay attention next time. Watch the cars that they do before and after Johnson's. Johnson's car takes twice as long to get through because it's almost like they are looking for something to fail him on.

I really hate the word cheating . Inovation and pushing the boundries are an accepted part of this sport. It may not be a part of other sports , but it is the very foundation of this sport . I really getting tired of people coming up with these things like they are something new . Calling it cheating puts our sport in a very negative light and people outside the sport take that comment at face value .No wonder we are losing fans when we allow our sport to be cast in such a bad light .As someone previously said ,the bedrock of our sport , the Junior Johnsons , the Pettys , the Earnhardts ,the Elliotts , every damn one of them tested the boundries every time they built a new racecar .Cheaters ? No fn way.

Really? You must be joking. Sr with the steel reinforced 'I just tapped him' fenders, Waltrip with the rocket fuel and trick spoiler, rear ends that only move too much when nascar can't measure them, shaved frames, levitating oil cooler covers. Cheating used to be rampant back in 'the good old days' people rave about. That's how nascar ended up with so many rules and a complex inspection process that starts when the welding is done on the frame.

It's was part of the charm of the red neck racing. Who's doing what and why are they winning. It isn't as charming when they have a team of lawyers and engineers doing it, but it's still part of the sport. I bet there has been more than one champion who outright cheated in the last race to win, knowing full well nascar would cover it up when the infraction was found 3 days later at the tech center.

Was that a Bill Elliott dig? Cause I know for sure that he didn't . :D I think that stuff made Smokey Yunick famous.

I'm thinking more Sr. He sure seemed to always end the season with dominant cars as if by magic. I also think NASCAR makes teams pay a price the entire following year. Super tight inspections for those guys, and a no to almost anything they want.

Call it cheating, call it crossing the line, call it pushing the envelope - it's just semantics.

The fact is that technological innovations are brought about when smart and creative people try new things.
And then there are the blatant cheats, some of whom have become legends of the sport.

DW won an all-star race in a Junior Johnson car and immediately after crossing the finish line first, his engine conveniently "blowed up". Opinion has it that DW and Junior both new the engine was illegal and so after the win, Darrel intentionally over-revved it and caused it to detonate, thereby eliminating any opportunity for NASCAR to inspect it.

If he's not a cheater, I suppose that DW could be referred to as an innovator's assistant!

I love how some people think Jimmie Johnson is such a horrible driver.
And to note the notion of "anybody could drive that car to 5 titles", let's see what chad does after this. Cause if that was true, he could mint a money machine by giving that car that to "anybody could drive that car to 5 titles" Dale Jr.

I love it when people come here and whine about Jimmie winning all those cups. The simpleton approach is to label his highly innovative cc a cheater. But what it really does is expose the accuser of being completely ignorant in regard to the history of NASCAR and how the greatest teams and drivers pushed (and often blatantly broke) the rules.

Just so we get back on the Keselowski theme of this thread..... I wonder what Brad would think of this article that I was just reading on Chad Knaus? o_O A little dated but a decent read.

Right on Matt . These folks screaming cheater have to be brand new fans who know nothing about the evolution of the racecar.I don't think that Nascar has ever called anyone a cheater.

I think the big story of 2012 was over looked. When Brad spoke out about the 'trick' rear ends HMS was using and NASCAR made new rules, JJ's performance never took that usual Chase jump and he started making driver errors. NASCAR took away HMS's Chase ace in the hole and they didn't have anything else to bring. Race Hub did a little thing about the trick rear ends with Bootie Barker, and he said HMS and some others were doing things they weren't supposed to be doing. IMO, setting the car up to pass inspection and then exceed limits while racing is cheating. I think NASCAR saw it the same way and ended the practice with the new car.

NASCAR shouldn't change the rules with 10 races left. They left a loophole and Chad figured it out. That's racing. That's what separates Chad from Paul Wolfe and the rest of them.

Chad and a few others got off easy. nascar could have penalized them instead of giving them a pass while saying "don't go any further". The proof of that is the did change the rules after the season.

I don't think it's so much that they change a rule , more that they add a rule , covering an area where there was no rule.;)

The goal of every "good" racing team is to win a championship, right?
In order to win a championship there are several obvious elements that are required.
Among those is a crew chief who is willing to test the limits of the rulebook in an attempt to gain a competitive advantage over the rest of the field.
If I owned a race team, I would want Chadski - or someone just like him - to lead my team!
I mean, it's not like he's putting jet fuel in the gas tank...
