andy.....ain't nuthin but new nba deal still on table.........all other live sports deals done.
tnt-n-espn will bid that up......which is why they wanna sell nascar 2014.
current nba deal is $930 mill /yr.........may go as hi as double w/ new deal. ??
global monetization.
fox/nbc may bid .....but i think they've made their bed already.....w/ current content deals ? we'll see.

And Fox and NBC will be paying $820 mil a year for nascar's 38 races? I can only imagine what the NBA will go for.

I don't see many major college sports rights expiring soon though. The only one I can think of is the Big Ten's ESPN/ABC agreements running through 2016. The SEC, ACC, PAC-12 agreements run pretty far out, as in 2020+. And ESPN already grabbed the new College Football Playoff.

fl....as an sec fan......never figured big 10 as a big deal . ha! hope cbs gets that.

These tv clowns can do what they want, someone is going show nascar on tv.

Same here. :p They do have a lot of schools with huge fan bases so that's a plus though. 2nd most-watched conference behind the SEC.
I'm one of those poor saps who roots for a Big Ten school (my alma mater, Ohio State), but the SEC is certainly top dog right now.

However, I'd still like to see how one of those teams would do in sub-60 degree weather. How 'bout coming up to Columbus, Ann Arbor, or Madison in December? ;)

Sucks to suck. ;)

That would be really cool to see though. I've always hoped for a playoff that includes on-campus venues rather than soulless spaceships like Cowboys Stadium.

brett favre did ! ha!

That sounds like a challenge to my photoshop skills, johali. ;)
Photoshop had nothing to do with your choice of and positioning of subjects, that came right out of your noggin and come to think of it that's a little scary.

NBA's ratings aren't as good as the sports media claims.

Actually, let me rewrite that.

NASCAR's ratings aren't as bad as the sports media claims.

If NASCAR's ratings are so horrible, so are NBA's ratings because the epic NBA Finals only got a couple million more viewers than the Daytona 500.

Difference is, NBA gets respect from the mainstream sports media. NASCAR doesn't.

NASCAR's ratings will go up with the new television deal. Fox Sports 1 and NBCSN are committed to NASCAR. They're going to promote NASCAR across all their platforms (FS1, Fox News Channel, Fox TV, FX, NBCSN, NBC, MSNBC, USA). They're going to talk about NASCAR on their sports shows and on their news channels.

I think television coverage is a big deal. I'd like to see TNT and ESPN out at the end of this year for that reason.

andy......once again......nba is worldwide.....an they have a boatload a' daytona ratins durin finals.
thus tha $$ billion + espn-n-tnt ..(or ??) ...will pay w/ new contract. mo reason they sell 2014 nascar rights.
espn 's been firin folks since spring......so disney beancounters in charge now.

me thinks fox/nbc only coverage.....11 yrs.....is gonna be good fer fans.
lotsa new tech comin on board.....cause both gotta monetize that huge investment.
ain't gonna do that w/ tv only.........

Like I said, it's amazing what nascar got for 36 races compared to what the NBA gets for what I assume are many times more games.

Like I said, it's amazing what nascar got for 36 races compared to what the NBA gets for what I assume are many times more games.

Most of those hundreds of games are aired on regional and local sports networks.

NASCAR is in a very good spot because they're a centerpiece for two new sports networks. NBA, not so much. They'll probably remain on ESPN because ESPN has the most to lose. ESPN would much rather lose NASCAR because, well, most of their viewers don't like NASCAR and most of NASCAR's viewers don't like ESPN.

But there's a game in almost every region 3 or 4 times a week. 1,230 regular season games a year vs 38 races.

But NBA is not the ratings juggernaut that the sports media claims it is. An average nationally televised NBA game on ABC gets about the same numbers as a NASCAR race on TNT or ESPN. The Final gets huge ratings (huge as in about the same as the Daytona 500) because casual viewers watch. Not to mention, the Heat/Spurs series a few months ago was epic and I don't even like basketball. Aside from that, the "popularity" of the NBA is kind of a forced thing ... too much coverage on news and sports shows, one dominant team that has the greatest players this generation on it and a forced narrative from the MSM that NBA is wildly popular.

Get out of Florida, Chicago, North Carolina and the left coast and nobody knows the NBA exists.

NASCAR is a ratings juggernaut - and still is in spite of the current slump and the associated narrative. The current TV package hurts ratings more than anything. NASCAR has six races on TNT. They're just there. Nobody outside of die-hard fans notice that. The races on ESPN would get more viewers if ESPN gave NASCAR the same heavy promotion and attention they give NBA and MLB.

NBA worldwide popularity doesn't mean a thing to ESPN. Just like soccer and F1 don't mean a thing here.

We'll see what happens to NBA Finals ratings when Lebron James and the Miami Heat aren't in the Finals and bandwagon sports fans aren't watching.

andy----if espn/tnt buys exclusive rights fer all nba coverage in new contract.....they own tha content rights....
fer every eyeball in tha world ! ie--provider in spain.....pays espn....just like comcast usa does.
same thing in f1/soccer.....nbc pays content owner...who bought rights.

you ain't caught that fb "duh" goin round has ya ? ha!

No, they don't pay ESPN. ESPN, which has an international presence, already carries the games internationally and that's included in the contract.

so all tha nba games in tha"world" are carried by tha content provider...espn/tnt.....an no provider pays them ta show tha games ?

I don't know. I think at least part of it will happen. The ESPN part, everyone has had their suspicions and opinions but nobody really knew the cold hard facts. However, everybody knows TNT wants out now. TNT didn't even attempt to let that be any secret. NASCAR won't be on TNT next year.

The ESPN **** is a mess.
So basically Time Warner doesn't want anything to do with Nascar, they own TNT correct?

Damn, it took me awhile to decipher it also, had to use all of my fingers and toes. I rode for 40+ years, mostly Indians and Harleys and never heard of it but here it is..

I don't really care who broadcasts the races. Just show more action and stop feeling the need to talk the entire time. I'll fill in the commercial gaps using Raceview.
