ESPN fires Marty Reid

Remember him forgetting who he was working with at a Nationwide race last year? LOL

That call of Ryan Blaney winning Kentucky a lap early last weekend probably didn't help him any.

I don't know, Bill Weber hung around for years and his mistakes were worse than Marty Reid's mistakes.

He always sounded like he was totally lost calling a race. A real fish out of water.

It can be hard but Marty was pretty bad on the NASCAR side. Still, this doesn't make sense. He was competent in NHRA and alright in IndyCar.

I wonder who will call the Indianapolis 500 now? I seriously doubt this has anything to do with his muffed call in the Nationwide race last week though. Bill Weber made terrible calls all the time on NBC and TNT and it took him getting drunk and lashing out at a hotel clerk for him to make his job disappear.

I liked Marty in Nhra and Indy car.

I just have to believe right now that the stars are aligning for NASCAR to go to NBC next year instead of 2015. This is an extremely bizarre move. And ESPN has cut NASCAR coverage significantly. Hell, their SportsCenter commercials plug hockey (which is the lowest rated major league sport in America) more than NASCAR and ESPN hasn't aired hockey in almost a decade.

Does this really matter? MSNBC will surely pick him up.

Or he could go the route of Bill Webber and do magic at hotel lobbies. :p

Why did he get fired? I know at the end of the NNS race last week he thought the race was over when there was still one lap. Kind of wonder if he's been sipping the funny water.

31 years at ESPN is a pretty good run.

He called a lot of Nascar races but never really seemed to know what he was talking about. Oh well, no loss.

After 31 years they could've let him finish the season out. He did a good job calling NHRA w/ Mike Dunn. I agree he wasn't the greatest at calling NASCAR but 31 years should've got him some respect.
YEP, he did something right for an employer to keep him on the air for 31 years.

Yeah, he was a NHRA/IndyCar guy. I liked him. I hope he lands at NBC.

Wow this is pretty good.

Hopefully he was putting some good money in the bank along the way.

Harsh world we live in. One would think 10 years would buy you some safety blanket, forget 30+. If that's not enough then nothing is.

I've listened to him on air. He constantly says things that are wrong. Not everything has to be so dramatic ya know? I'm sure he will land somewhere and be just fine.
Please, your basing what you heard a few times on the air a good enough reason to take a mans livelihood away from him after so many years, how do you know it wasn't a health issue.

I don't know what it was. I'm just saying IF it was because of his on air mistakes, can you really blame them? Besides, he worked there for years. Do you really think he's gonna have trouble finding a new job?

Marty was more than just "competent" in NHRA and Indy Car. He knew his stuff and could communicate.
To me, he just never seemed comfortable with NASCAR.

I wish his well. After 31 years, to be summarily fired "effective immediately" says that something other than a few on air mistakes are at work. There is more to the story.

From the Huffington Post:
Reid erred during the Sept. 21 Nationwide Series race at Kentucky when he called the win for Ryan Blaney one lap shy of the finish. Bestwick called Saturday's race at Dover instead of Reid.

I don't watch Nationwide regularly? Anybody remember this when it happened?

Perhaps Marty was told time and again to study nascar a little so he would be useful to race fans. IMO, it wasn't his mistakes but failure to bring anything to add to the broadcast. He just seemed to bounce off what others said and kill the flow. After 31 years, you can bet he's set for a nice retirement.

Oh, yes, it happened. I was yelling at the TV --- "there is still ONE lap to go, you idiot!"
Marty just got too wrapped up in watching the race and forgot to stay professional.
mark drove down pit road with one lap to go as the leader and lost the race and he still has a job. Yes there has to more going on then a couple mistakes.

I seriously doubt that's the reason. He's been at ESPN for over 30 years, they don't fire people for one mistake like that -- and certainly don't do so in a way where they don't let a veteran sign off one final time.

That said, it seems pretty easy to criticize announcers from the confines of a keyboard and monitor. I wasn't a fan of Marty Reid and there are certainly other announcers that are boring, but it's a little unfair to say someone should be FIRED from a job they've had for 31 years because they made one bad call.

ESPN has a lot of flame throwers and pot stirrers on their network who say things all the time that aren't true. If they fired Marty Reid because of ONE mistake, that's pretty ******. You don't get to let Dana Jacobson, Skip Baylees, Rob Parker and so many others hang around and then try to establish credibility (because of emerging threats from FS1 and NBCSN) by firing Marty Reid. This is what's called throwing someone under the bus.

There has to be more to this - and I'm thinking it has to be something along the lines of Marty Reid talking to NBCSN.
